School officials pleased with the pod

Board accepts North Bend addition as substantially complete

NORTH LIBERTY­– Ray Willoughby, the construction manager for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school district, was smiling as he gave a progress report to the board of directors during their regular monthly meeting Wednesday, June 19, at North Bend Elementary in North Liberty. For a little under a year, construction has been underway on an addition to the crowded school.
At the meeting, the board voted unanimously to accept substantial completion on the addition, also known as the pod.

New La Montessori Nurtury to host open house for public July 8

NORTH LIBERTY– Parents of very young children will soon have a distinctive new choice for child care in North Liberty.
La Montessori Nurtury will open July 10 under the ownership and guidance of Lillian Myers, at 70 Circle Dr., Ste. A. The former location of the Montessori Children’s Garden preschool– which expanded into a larger space nearby– has been newly remodeled and designed specifically for infants and toddlers.

Work on Hwy. 965 will reduce traffic to single lane

NORTH LIBERTY– Two-way traffic on Highway 965 in North Liberty will be reduced to a single lane with flaggers on Wednesday, June 26, for concrete saw cutting. The lane reduction, a necessary part of the project extending at Pheasant Lane to Highway 965 north of Scales Bend Road, is expected to last from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Additional lane reductions will be necessary in early and mid-July. These and other project-related notices will be available on the City of North Liberty’s website site at northlibertyiowa.org/projects.

July 21 Turkey Trot event to benefit NL pantry

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Librty Community Pantry will host its first annual Thanksgiving in July Turkey Trot 5k Race and Family 1 Mile Event on Sunday, July 21, at 8 a.m., in conjunction with the community-wide food drive that provides food assistance to the hungry. This chip-timed race will begin and end at the pantry, 89 N. Jones Blvd., in North Liberty. Advance registration, due by Monday, July 8, is $25, Late registration July 9 through 21 is $35 and a T-shirt is not guaranteed.

TIFFIN– The City of Tiffin in Johnson County issued a boil advisory Friday after shutting off water to the older part of town and Deer View Estates, a newer section on the west side.
The city was installing a new pipe connection Friday afternoon when they needed to shut off the water to complete the work. About 500 to 600 residents and businesses are affected.
The city expects to complete repairs, restore water pressure and flush the lines Friday evening. However, the boil advisory will remain in effect until the city can collect and test water samples.

Clipper girls’ record above .500 with sweep over Vikettes

OXFORD– They danced in the dugout and they danced on the diamond.
The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity softball girls were having fun while taking care of business Monday, June 17, in a doubleheader against the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes. The Clippers took the opener 9-0 and held on for a 6-4 win in the nightcap.

Miller hits home run in 11-inning marathon game

IOWA CITY– An 11-inning battle of endurance and will power ended with a 3-2 win for the West High Women of Troy Thursday, June 20, on the home diamond against the Trojans of Waterloo East. However, the nightcap, while finishing in regulation play, ended on the sour note of a 6-4 loss.

NL councilor lacks support for changing firearms rules

NORTH LIBERTY– People who lawfully possess guns will still be able to carry them onto city property in North Liberty without violating any city laws.
A resolution to prohibit firearms on city-owned property came before the North Liberty City Council on May 28, brought by request from council member Coleen Chipman. After moderate discussion, Chipman’s motion to disallow weapons on city-owned property failed 2-3, with Chipman and council member Gerry Kuhl voting in favor.

Water, sewer consumption rates to rise July 1, bigger jump coming next year

NORTH LIBERTY– The river is not the only thing on the rise.
North Liberty residents will likely see their water and sewer rates increase beginning July 1.
Last Tuesday, May 28, the North Liberty City Council approved the first reading of ordinance amendments to increase the rates people pay on their water and sewer usage.

Highway 965 funding gets another lift

NORTH LIBERTY– The City of North Liberty keeps chipping away at street improvements projects, and little by little, funding assistance keeps the wheels of progress turning.
At its May 29 meeting, the Urbanized Area Policy Board of the Metropolitan Planning Organization of Johnson County (MPOJC) voted to funnel another $1,948,000 to North Liberty for Highway 965. The portion of roadway approved for this round of funding, which stretches from Penn Street to Zeller Street, is considered the third of a planned seven-phase, comprehensive plan to widen and improve the thoroughfare.

West boys sweep the field at state soccer

DES MOINES– Top ranked. Top-seed. And, only one loss on the season, the season opener, to Cedar Rapids Washington. The Iowa City West High Trojans rolled like a juggernaut into the Cownie Soccer Complex in Des Moines for the Class 3A state soccer tournament, and rolled back out with the state championship trophy again.
The Trojans took care of rival City High 2-0 on Saturday, June 1, to clinch their seventh title and extend their win streak to 20 straight.
