Women of Troy top tennis Prairie hawks, 8-1

IOWA CITY– The sun finally came out Tuesday, April 17, and shone brightly upon the Iowa City West High Women of Troy as they defeated Cedar Rapids Prairie, 8-1, in varsity tennis action at West High.
“Five matches have been postponed due to weather conditions,” Coach Amie Villarini said.
The win improved West’s record to 3-0 in the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC).

CR Kennedy defeats West, 4-1

IOWA CITY– The Cedar Rapids Kennedy Cougars left the Iowa City West High Women of Troy looking for their first win of the season after defeating West, 4-1, Tuesday, April 17, at West High’s Ed Barker Soccer Complex, as the first half of a girls/boys varsity doubleheader.
Junior Rachel Olson scored West’s only goal with an assist from Kennedy Hochstedler (also a junior), while Julia Bernat, a freshman, made 17 saves and allowed four goals through 80 minutes of play.

Solon boys run away with 6-1 win over Anamosa April 20

SOLON– Halfway through the first period, it looked like a close match against one-win Anamosa.
Down 2-0, the Raiders scored a goal to slash the lead in half.
But then the Solon boys responded.
The Spartan defense clamped down, and the offense methodically moved back into Anamosa territory and tacked on two more goals in the closing moments of the half for a 4-1 lead.
Senior goalie Ryan Sears, relieving senior Eric Weetman, pitched a shut-out in the second period, Solon tacked on two more goals and ran away with a 6-1 victory April 20 at Spartan Stadium.

Kites for Kids honors child abuse victims

NORTH LIBERTY– Kites filled the sky above the football field at North Central Jr. High in North Liberty Saturday, April 21 during the Kites for Kids festival. The family-friendly activity was part of Child Abuse Prevention Month, and was held to recognize and honor children who have been affected by child abuse. It also recognized the many non-profit and social services organizations, which work tirelessly in an attempt to prevent child abuse.
While some families brought their own kites to fly, free kites were provided on-site, with minimal assembly required.

Pantry golf tournament Friday, May 4

CORALVILLE– Registration is open for the North Liberty Community Pantry’s 8th Annual 4-Person Best Shot Golf Tournament held Friday, May 4.
Registration is at 7:30 a.m. with final check-in at 8:30 a.m. A shotgun start begins at 9 a.m. followed by a catered meal at 1 p.m. The tournament will take place at the Brown Deer Golf Club at 1900 Country Club Dr. in Coralville. The entry fee is $450 per team, prepaid. This includes a continental breakfast, green fees, a cart, a catered meal, driving range balls and team picture. A silent auction will also take place along with awards ceremony.

North Liberty’s advanced wastewater treatment plant

NORTH LIBERTY– It’s safe to say North Liberty’s a special place. And while the growing community maintains its small town ambiance, it certainly doesn’t cut corners. Even the city’s approach to wastewater treatment is top-notch– just ask newly appointed Superintendent Drew Lammers.
“Everybody throughout the city, residents included, should be proud of what we have,” Lammers remarked.

Built in 1967, North Liberty’s wastewater treatment plant underwent major upgrades in 1998 when it was a sequential batch reactor (SBR) facility.

Beauty and the Beast dance in Tiffin

TIFFIN– True love and internal beauty won out over vanity and ego as the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School Drama Department performed the musical version of Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” Thursday, April 19, through Saturday, April 22, in the Performing Arts Center, in Tiffin.

TIFFIN– The annual Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School Community Clean-up Day will be held on Friday, April 27. CCA High School students from the Student Assistance Team/Interact along with National Honor Society will volunteer their day to help our older community members with yard work, windows, small household chores and general spring cleaning.

Spring Cleanup Day April 28

NORTH LIBERTY– Spring Cleanup Day, for disposal of large items, brush, tires, batteries and other waste, is scheduled for April 28 from 7 to 11 a.m. at the Public Works Facility, 620 Calvin St.
The cost for this service is included in monthly city utility bills and is for residents of North Liberty only (please be prepared with a water bill stub or driver’s license). NLCP Planting Party season kickoff April 26

NORTH LIBERTY– Growing Together Garden, North Liberty Community Pantry’s 9,600-square-foot educational garden, invites the community to the annual Planting Party on Thursday, April 26, from 4:30-6:30 p.m.
Individuals and families are welcome to stop by Growing Together Garden, 89 N Jones Blvd in North Liberty, anytime during the event to learn basic planting skills, put seeds in the ground, or simply tour the garden space. Snacks and gardening equipment will be provided. All ages welcome and no gardening experience required, in fact, beginning gardeners are encouraged to attend.

NORTH LIBERTY– The City of North Liberty may soon consider a rezoning and subdivision plat for property, and a public open house-style meeting is being held to explain the proposal. The property is at the southeast corner of Kansas Avenue and St. Andrews Drive (270 Street in Johnson County). The proposal is for a residential subdivision of multi- and single-family lots.
A location map and a concept plan with rezoning proposed by the developer is avaiable at northlibertyiowa.org. This memo is being sent to property owners within 200 feet of the proposed development.

Kites for Kids Volunteers sought

NORTH LIBERTY– The 2018 Kites for Kids Festival will be held Saturday, April 21 from noon to 2 p.m. at North Central Junior High. A partnership between Community Partnerships for Protecting Children, Johnson County and the City of North Liberty, the event supports Child Abuse Prevention Awareness with free kites, face painting, treats and beverages.
