CCA opens the season with 8-2 and 8-0 wins over Vinton-Shellsburg

VINTON– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity baseball team posted two W’s to open the shortened 2020 season Monday, June 15, with a doubleheader sweep over the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings, in Vinton.
The Clippers took the opener, 8-2, with senior Tyler Schrepfer driving in four runs and smacking a double. Senior Cade Armstrong also doubled in the contest, while senior Casey Ogden and sophomores Parker Smith and Stirlen Roberson drove in one run each. Junior Brock Reade struck out four, in three innings on the mound, with Armstrong striking out one in four innings.

Clinton tops CCA, 8-7, in non-conference baseball

TIFFIN– The home opener for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity boys’ baseball team was soured a bit as the Clinton River Kings took an 8-7 non-conference win Tuesday, June 16, in Tiffin.
Junior Brock Reade knocked a double for the Clippers, as senior Casey Ogden and sophomores Sam Young and Stirlen Roberson each smacked a pair of singles.
Senior Tyler Schrepfer pitched four innings with one strikeout and junior Cooper Hoffman worked the mound for three innings with a pair of strikeouts.
The Creek Boys had seven runs and 11 hits.

IOWA CITY– The Liberty High varsity baseball team opened the shortened 2020 season on Tuesday, June 16, placing a big feather in their caps as they knocked off Iowa City High, 2-0, on the Little Hawks’ diamond in Mercer Park.

NORTH LIBERTY– Liberty High’s first varsity game on its new diamond was almost marred by defeat as the Cedar Rapids Washington Warriors erased an 8-1 deficit Thursday, June 18. The Bolts opened the game with two runs in the bottom of the first inning and followed with one in the third, and two in the fourth before the Warriors scored one run in the top of the fifth. The Lightning added three more in the bottom half of the fifth, and looked to be cruising toward the win.

NORTH LIBERTY– Liberty High’s varsity softball team put up its first win of the season in dramatic fashion Thursday, June 18, with a sweep over No. 2 Iowa City High. The unranked Lightning overcame a 7-6 deficit in the 10th inning of game one of a doubleheader with two runs to pull out an 8-7 win in the first game played on their new diamond.

TIFFIN– It’s known by many names: “Old Glory,” The “Stars and Stripes,” “The Colors.” The flag of the United States of America consists of 13 red and white alternating stripes with a blue field covered in white stars (originally 13 to represent a new constellation). On June 14, 1777, The Second Continental Congress passed a resolution sealing the design of the flag recognized around the world. One-hundred thirty-nine years later, President Woodrow Wilson decreed June 14 to be “Flag Day,” a day to honor the flag and the country it represents.

CCA’s Cheyaenne Bunch charts a new college course

HOMESTEAD– She’ll get to keep blue and white in her wardrobe.
Clear Creek Amana High School (CCA) senior Cheyaenne Bunch changed her college plans, opting to remain closer to home. Bunch initially signed a letter of intent to play volleyball with Concordia University, in Seward, Neb., back in November. Concordia is a Lutheran college in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Great Plains Athletic Conference and the Bulldogs went 23-6 last season.

TIFFIN– Herky the Hawk has one more reason to shake his fist at Bucky Badger starting in the fall of 2021.
Clear Creek Amana High School (CCA) standout student-athlete TJ Bollers ended a lengthy search for a collegiate home, with suitors wooing him from across the country, to continue playing football with a video announcement on Twitter, released Thursday, June 11.
Bollers, a senior at CCA this fall, announced his intent to attend the University of Wisconsin, in Madison, where he will pursue a degree in engineering along with gridiron success.

Solon grads share their experiences with racism Over 100 march through Solon

SOLON– Black Lives Matter to white people, too.
And that is making a difference, according to a few Solon High School (SHS) graduates.
SHS alumni led a throng of about 150 people on a march through Solon Sunday, June 14, demanding justice for black Americans.
The Black Lives Matter (BLM) supporters shouted the names of the most recent victims in America’s race war as they walked from the SHS parking lot to the bandstand downtown.
Leading the crowd were Solon graduates Ainslee Eastman, Cate Neumann, Sydney Lawson and Ellie Hawkins, and 17-year-old Quincy Jagnow of North Liberty.

City of North Liberty commissioner vacancies remain to get involved

NORTH LIBERTY– After a series of commission appointments on June 9, several vacancies remain. The commissions and boards make decisions about a host of issue facing the community: what can be rezoned, if a variance to code should/can be allowed, priorities for public parks and recreational amenities, and much more. Volunteers are needed to lead and advise on the commissions. Applications are due July 7.

Water rates will go up three percent in North Liberty

NORTH LIBERTY– Water rates in North Liberty increase by three percent next month. The City Council approved the first reading of an ordinance authorizing the increase Tuesday, June 9, during a regular meeting conducted online via the Zoom virtual meeting platform. Two more readings are required with the second scheduled for later this month and the third to occur during the first meeting in July.
The new rate starts with water used in July according to Assistant City Administrator/City Clerk Tracey Mulcahey.
A public hearing, by phone and email, was held with no comments received.
