OXFORD— Governor Terry Branstad closed the 2015 legislative session by signing and vetoing a number of budget bills on Thursday, July 2. Included was a veto of $55.7 million in one-time money intended to supplement a 1.25 percent increase in state supplemental aid to school districts.

TIFFIN– Breaking the cycle of poverty is one of the biggest social issues facing our country and the world today; but that doesn’t mean little things can’t make a huge difference.
Owning a book, for example, is a simple propriety that many take for granted, but is not necessarily an equal opportunity.
Tiffin’s Grace United Methodist Church and the larger United Methodist Church (UMC) organization hope to change that through a recent initiative, “Change a Child’s Story.”

Local before- and after-school programs need DHS licensure to continue

ICCSD board requests alternate partnership proposals if city opts not to obtain license

IOWA CITY– The Iowa City Community School District’s before- and after-school programs in North Liberty and Coralville may be affected by a new Iowa law that requires school childcare programs to be licensed through the Department of Human Services.
During the school board’s July 14 meeting, the directors agreed the district should have a plan in place to make sure programs in the two cities will not be interrupted.

Gunshots reported outside Slim’s Saloon

Sheriff’s office seeking more information

According to a press release issued by the sheriff’s office Monday, an altercation was reported outside of Slim’s at approximately 1:10 a.m. Sunday morning, July 19. The release said a large group of people were involved in a fight, and at some point during the altercation, a pistol was brandished and discharged several times. No one was struck by any rounds. No arrests have been made, but the case is under investigation and anyone having any information is encouraged to contact Detective Kevin Elliott at the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, 319-356-6020 Ext.

Truck strikes Iowa City police car, totals North Liberty cruiser

IOWA CITY– A car chase on Interstate 380 began with damage to an Iowa City police vehicle, and ended when a North Liberty police car was totaled.
On 4:09 on the morning of July 20, while an officer was conducting an unrelated traffic stop just south of the Melrose Avenue intersection, an Iowa City Police Department patrol vehicle was sideswiped by a pickup truck and trailer traveling northbound on Highway 218/Interstate 380.

Public invited to volunteer clean-up event at Lake Macbride Park July 29

SOLON– Lake Macbride State Park will host a volunteer event on Wednesday, July 29, from 5-9 p.m. The project will involve repairing and clearing brush from the stone steps that lead to the Lake Macbride dam. Those interested in donating their time should meet at the Lake Macbride Fisheries parking lot at 5 p.m. Participants should bring work clothes, gloves and insect repellant.

North Liberty accepting social service funding applications

NORTH LIBERTY– The City of North Liberty regularly contributes funding to local social service organizations, including the Family Resource Centers at North Liberty elementary schools, the Johnson County Housing Trust Fund and the North Liberty Community Pantry. As part of its budget for the current fiscal year, the North Liberty City Council set aside $11,000 in uncommitted funding for social service programs and projects serving North Liberty residents.

World Link seeks host families for international students

SOLON– World Link and local coordinator and host Barb Messer are seeking host families in the Solon, Clear Creek Amana and Cedar Rapids College Community school districts.
“World Link is one of the few exchange programs with a real purpose,” Messer said. “We feel the best way to ensure long-lasting peace and understanding between the U.S. and other at risk countries is to enable young people to learn about the U.S. and Americans firsthand while educating Americans about their homes and lives as well, person to person.”

WILLIAMSBURG– Cappy’s Crew made it through the first round of Class 3A substate baseball by defeating the Grinnell Tigers, 3-0, in Williamsburg on Friday, July 17, but fell 1-0 to the Williamsburg Raiders on Monday, July 20.
The Clippers entered the District 9 semifinal with a 20-18 record to Grinnell’s 10-16 and, with the higher seed, took the “home” spot on the scoreboard.

DeLaney hits for the cycle to lead West

IOWA CITY– Baseball fans were treated to a rare feat Monday, July 20, as West High’s Kevin DeLaney hit for the cycle. DeLaney, a senior, belted out a single, a two-RBI double, a two-RBI triple and a solo home run in perfect sequential order as he led the Trojans with four hits in a 14-7 substate semifinal win over the Bulldogs from Ottumwa.

WASHINGTON– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) Clippers varsity baseball team closed out the regular season last year with the most wins in a season in the program’s history; 20. After a trip to Washington on Monday, July 13, the Clippers not only took a 13-9 shootout win, but also tied the high water mark with a 20-18 record ahead of the Class 3A substate campaign.
