North Liberty Leader

A glimpse of normal

CCA continues a patriotic tradition near Oxford

OXFORD– A common cliché heard frequently in this time of viral pandemic is “the new normal.” In a time of traditions such as going to church, high school graduations, RAGBRAI and the Cedar Rapids Freedom Festival all being cancelled or prohibited, some glimpses of normal, or tradition, can still be found. For example, the large American flag still flies over the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District’s Administrative Offices, at the intersection of Highway 6 and Upper Old Highway 6, just north of Oxford.

North Liberty public building closures extended, programming modified

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty's public facilities, including city hall and the community center, currently closed to the public due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will remain closed, and registration for summer programs will be postponed, indefinitely.
Through the closure, city staff will continue to offer no-contact services such as phone support and Library Hop checkout, digital services including movies and books, and other modified programming provided remotely, delivered digitally, or held asynchronously.

ICCSD appoints interim superintendent

Matt Degner takes over for outgoing Steve Murley on July 1

IOWA CITY– The Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) moved one step closer to the end of the Steve Murley era as the district board of directors selected Assistant Superintendent Matt Degner to serve as the interim superintendent beginning July 1. The board took the action by unanimous vote on Tuesday, April 21.

Volunteers step in to clean up popular shooting range

SWISHER– One of Iowa’s most heavily used shooting ranges was the recipient of a cleanup project led by volunteers who stepped in after the local range manager was sidelined with a non-work-related injury.
The Hawkeye Wildlife Area shooting range, between Iowa City and Cedar Rapids, is a popular destination for avid target shooters to sharpen their skills and site in their rifles. The range consists of three separate ranges– a 100-yard range, a 50-yard range and a 25-yard range. Range rules require users clean up after themselves and take out what they bring in.

Adapting technology in a time of need

Local initiatives protect those on the frontlines in the war against COVID-19

NORTH LIBERTY– COVID-19 is thought to spread primarily through close, person-to-person contact via microscopic respiratory droplets, according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC). The droplets are released when an infected person speaks, coughs or sneezes, and can land in the nose or mouth of somebody close by, possibly even inhaled into the lungs.

Fareway donates more than $200,000 to support small businesses and their employers

BOONE– Fareway Stores, Inc. announced a $200,000 donation to the Iowa Chamber of Commerce Executives (ICCE). The donation provides for $1,000-$2,000 in gift cards to ICCE chamber of commerce members in the communities Fareway serves.
“ICCE’s members have the pulse in their communities on how to best serve their small business members during this time of need,” said Fareway President and CEO Reynolds W. Cramer. “We hope this donation helps small businesses and their employees that are facing challenges during this crisis.”

His mission: to get people moving

Frank Haege is Tiffin’s first recreation director

TIFFIN– Frank Haege has a simple goal for the residents of Tiffin: “Get people moving.”
Haege is the city’s first recreation director, charged with researching, planning and implementing programmed inclusive activities for individuals and groups for the City of Tiffin at a recreational level. Or simply put, to get people moving.

The end

Gov. Reynolds cancels the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year

JOHNSTON– Students will not return to classes for the 2019-2020 school year after Governor Kim Reynolds issued her third and final proclamation for the schools during her daily COVID-19 press conference Friday, April 17, at the State Emergency Operations Center in Johnston.
“I regret to say Iowa schools will not reopen for this school year,” Reynolds said.

Lighting up for the seniors

Liberty High honors seniors’ leadership

NORTH LIBERTY– All spring high school sports remain postponed until at least Monday, May 4 (first practice date of May 1), but all of the athletic fields at Liberty High were lit up Wednesday, April 9, in a salute to the seniors.
Liberty, like many schools, was holding a Virtual Spirit Week with Wednesday’s emphasis on leadership. Athletic Director Mike Morrison said lighting up the fields was a way to honor the seniors and recognize their leadership.

Service with safety in mind

NL True Value offers delivery and pick-up service

NORTH LIBERTY– The COVID-19 epidemic has led to many changes in local businesses with some forced to close for the duration, and others having to alter how they serve their customers in an effort to “flatten the curve” of the number of infected people.
North Liberty True Value Hardware was among the first to shift their business model as they initiated curbside pick-up and delivery services early on.
“We did it right when the news came out,” owner Doug Christner said. “It was one of the first things we did. We posted on our sign out front and advertised it on our Facebook page.”

Take a hike!

County Trails remain open despite other closures

OXFORD– Hippocrates is said to have declared, “Nature itself is the best physician.”
As the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic continues, schools remain closed until at least the end of the month and additional businesses have been ordered to close in an attempt to prevent the spread of the disease.

2020 Blues & BBQ canceled

NORTH LIBERTY– “We have made the disappointing, but careful, decision to cancel the 2020 edition of North Liberty Blues & BBQ, originally scheduled for July 11,” announced North Liberty Communications Director Nick Bergus.
Bergus, also a member of the Blues & BBQ planning committee, said while the festival is still three months away, planning started last fall, and the current pandemic makes holding the festival even more challenging and potentially irresponsible.
