Cedar Rapids Prairie bests Iowa City West, 44-21

CEDAR RAPIDS– Cedar Rapids Prairie took down the Iowa City West High Trojans in the final dual meet of the regular season Thursday, Feb. 2, at Prairie High School with the Prairie Hawk varsity winning, 44-21.
Nelson Brands (152 pounds) pinned Prairie’s Morgan Hood in 1:58 while Guy Snow (220) pinned Prairie’s Alex Heisdorffer in 4:59. Tyler Yoerger (170) won 5-3 in sudden victory (SV) against Prairie’s Justis Kruse while Alex Aguirre (120) won a 3-2 decision over Prairie’s Ted Zangerle and Carter Rohweder (160) took an 8-4 decision from Prairie’s Tyger Whitters.

TIFFIN– With family, teammates and coaches watching, seven Clear Creek Amana (CCA) high school athletes put pen to paper and formalized their plans for college athletics Wednesday, Feb. 1– National Signing Day. While the day typically involves football players signing national letters of intent with NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) member schools, athletes in other sports, and/or planning on attending non-NCAA schools often participate as well.

IOWA CITY– Nine Iowa City West High athletes participated in a National Signing Day event Wednesday, Feb. 1, at the high school. While the day signifies the first day a senior can officially sign a Letter of Intent to play football for an National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) member school, athletes from other sports, and those who will attend non-NCAA schools also typically participate as they declare their collegiate sports plans.

CORALVILLE— All five enrolled agents on the staff at Taxes Plus have returned for another tax season.
Enrolled agents (EAs) are currently the only tax professionals tested by the IRS before being admitted to practice. They have unlimited rights to represent clients before the IRS, must adhere to a code of ethics and must take continuing professional education.
The newest EA, M. Jon Brown, joined the firm last year and works full-time year-round. He was admitted to practice as an EA in 2015 and has 12 years of tax preparation experience.

Bald Eagle Watch and Expo Feb. 4

NORTH LIBERTY– The fourth annual free Bald Eagle Watch and Expo will take place Saturday, Feb. 4, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The event includes a live viewing at the Tailwater West Picnic Shelter downstream from the dam at Coralville Lake. Scopes and binoculars will be available for closer looks at the birds. Free hot chocolate and coffee will also be available.

One step closer to North Liberty’s next mayor

City council set to make appointment Tuesday, Feb. 28

NORTH LIBERTY– The ball is finally rolling.
In a 3-2 vote, the North Liberty City Council decided to appoint a new mayor, rather than hold a special election.
At a regularly scheduled Jan. 24 meeting, members Terry Donahue, Brian Wayson and Chris Hoffman voted for appointment, while Annie Pollock and Brian Sayre favored a special election.
The decision came after former mayor Amy Nielsen assumed her role as state legislator earlier this month. Council members had a 60-day window following Nielsen’s Dec. 31 resignation date to come to a consensus.

City council seeks applicants for mayoral appointment

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty City Council is seeking applicants to fill the city’s mayoral seat vacancy. An application is available to download off the city’s website, or at City Hall, 3 Quail Creek Cir. Applications are due to the city clerk by 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 21, in person at City Hall or electronically to tmulcahey@northlibertyiowa.org.
The city council plans to consider candidates for appointment at its regular meeting scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 28, at the city council chambers, 1 Quail Creek Cir. Applicants are strongly encouraged to attend.

Family Day at Iowa Raptor Project Feb. 4

SOLON– The Iowa Raptor Project invites the public to another Family Day on Saturday, Feb. 4, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
February’s event features the Great Horned Owl, many of which are already nesting in the area.
Make your own owl baby out of cotton balls, pinecones, edible play dough and birdseed. Because they are edible for wildlife, kids can then put them out in the woods for the birds to munch on.
This free event takes place at 2095 Mehaffey Bridge Rd. NE, in Solon. The Iowa Raptor Project will have a fire going to help keep visitors warm.

Troop 216 to host chili supper Feb. 4

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty Boy Scout Troop 216 will host its 37th annual Chili Supper from 4:30-7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, at the North Liberty Community Center.
Tickets are $5. Children 5 and under are admitted free. The dinner includes all-you-can-eat meat or vegetarian chili, bread, drinks and a variety of homemade desserts, including traditional Scout cobbler.
The dinner is the troop’s primary annual fundraising event. Proceeds help cover the cost of high adventure trips, summer camp and other activities for the troop’s 30 Scouts.
