Garner Elementary girls run toward success

NL school holds 2015 Girls on the Run program

NORTH LIBERTY– For girls who participate in the after-school program Girls on the Run, running is more than just a way to encourage healthy habits.
It’s a way to encourage a healthy sense of self-worth.
Esther Baker, Executive Director of Girls on the Run Eastern Iowa, has seen girls blossom through participating in the organization.
She recalled one student who came into the program with extremely low self-confidence. When given a compliment, she would respond self-deprecatingly and had difficulty interacting with the other girls and her coaches.

When Johnson County law enforcement needs to get to the bottom– literally– they

IOWA CITY— Johnson County citizens have a variety of public safety agencies on duty around the clock to protect them, ranging from traditional fire departments and law enforcement agencies to the county’s ambulance service. Specialty units such as the Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) Response Team, the Sheriff’s SWAT team, County Rescue 52 and the bomb squad supplement these organizations.
But one such unit operates literally in the murky shadows most of us never see.

Begging for a Park

NL organizers hope to make a case for off-leash dog park

NORTH LIBERTY— In 2009, a North Liberty resident had an idea for an off-leash dog park where her canine companion could run freely and play with other four-legged friends. In 2012 that vision faded, but a new group is picking up where she left off.

Sun shines on NL’s 2015 festival

NORTH LIBERTY– The barbecue pits and jamming musicians weren’t the only hot things at North Liberty’s annual Blues & BBQ festival this year.
Finally; the sun was warm, too.
It’s been awhile since the annual community celebration of summer– and all things barbecue, blues and family-friendly fun– has enjoyed a day without stormy weather. In 2011, 2013 and 2014, storms and heavy rains interfered enough with the grounds and equipment to cause the festival to be cancelled or called off early.

OXFORD— With Tiffin Elementary nearly done and the first phase of the middle school expansion and renovation in progress, the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school board turned its attention to the high school and a planned expansion scheduled to start next spring.
All three projects, along with HVAC and other improvements at Amana Elementary, are part of a $48 million bond issue voters approved in 2014.

By Nora Heaton

Change a child’s story

By Lori Lindner

TIFFIN– Breaking the cycle of poverty is one of the biggest social issues facing our country and the world today; but that doesn’t mean little things can’t make a huge difference.
Owning a book, for example, is a simple propriety that many take for granted, but is not necessarily an equal opportunity.
Tiffin’s Grace United Methodist Church and the larger United Methodist Church (UMC) organization hope to change that through a recent initiative, “Change a Child’s Story.”

Local before- and after-school programs need DHS licensure to continue

ICCSD board requests alternate partnership proposals if city opts not to obtain license

IOWA CITY– The Iowa City Community School District’s before- and after-school programs in North Liberty and Coralville may be affected by a new Iowa law that requires school childcare programs to be licensed through the Department of Human Services.
During the school board’s July 14 meeting, the directors agreed the district should have a plan in place to make sure programs in the two cities will not be interrupted.
