TIFFIN– The City of Tiffin has over $7 million in improvements projects on its to-do list.
The next priority is figuring out how to pay for them.
Jeff Heil, of Northland Securities, came before the Tiffin City Council at its April 8 meeting to explain the city’s options for incurring the debt necessary to fund its committed capital projects, including completing the Ireland Avenue extension, upgrading Roberts Ferry Road, finishing Phase 5 of its portion of the Clear Creek Trail system and constructing municipal water and sewer utilities to Clear Creek Amana’s new elementary school.

NLFD responds to early morning fire at home struck by lightning

NORTH LIBERTY– A lightning strike is being blamed for a house fire early Monday morning in North Liberty.
According to the North Liberty Fire Department, firefighters were dispatched to 455 Carlyle Drive in North Liberty at approximately 1:35 a.m. Monday, April 13, to investigate a large boom heard by residents, followed by the brief activation of smoke detectors.
No fire was found at this location, but while clearing the scene, a North Liberty Police Department officer discovered an occupied residence on fire one block to the east.

Kites for Kids festivals in North Liberty April 18

Kite festival to help end child abuse April 18 in NL

NORTH LIBERTY– Kids will receive free kites to fly in remembrance of children lost to abuse at two upcoming Kites for Kids festivals in North Liberty and Iowa City.
The festivals will be noon-2 p.m., Saturday, April 18, in North Liberty on the grounds of North Central Junior High, and noon-2 p.m. Saturday, April 25, at Iowa City’s Lower City Park, Shelter 5.
Both events are free and open to the public and sponsored by the Johnson County Community Partnership for Protecting Children (JC-CPPC) in recognition of Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Work begins on 230th Street and Highway 965

NORTH LIBERTY– Weather permitting, 230th Street will close between 8 Point Trail and Highway 965 in North Liberty on Monday, April 20, so crews can widen the road. The work is expected to last approximately two weeks.
230th Street will serve as a local detour route when Highway 965 closes for construction, expected the first week of May.
The Highway 965 project includes rebuilding the highway’s intersections with Dubuque Street and Scales Bend Road/240th Street, flattening the curve, adding traffic signals, crosswalks, sidewalks and trails, and landscaping.

Shueyville All Church Garage Sale May 2

SHUEYVILLE– The Shueyville United Methodist Church will hold its All Church Garage Sale on Saturday, May 2, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 1195 Steeple Ln. NE in Shueyville. Merchandise will be priced at $3 per full grocery bag. Proceeds from the garage sale will support a mission in Progresso, Mexico, for school children.

NL’s “Make A Difference Day” is April 18

NORTH LIBERTY– Several North Liberty churches will host the service project “Make A Difference Day” on Saturday, April 18, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Work teams from several local churches will fan out all over North Liberty to perform community service.
Service projects could include yard work, small construction jobs, window washing, painting or other projects at little or no cost, to improve the lives of North Liberty residents.

OXFORD– The Oxford American Legion Post 537 will hold a breakfast and raffle fundraiser on April 19 from 7:30 a.m. until 12 noon, at 128 E. Main St. in Oxford.
Buy tickets now for the chance to win a 21-inch, self-propelled Troy Built lawn mower. Proceeds will go to Boys State or Legion scholarships for graduates. Raffle tickets are $5 each. NORTH LIBERTY– March was agriculture month at Hills Bank and Trust Company, and what better way to celebrate than inviting a few chicks over?
It was baby chick day at North Liberty’s Forevergreen Road location on Saturday, March 28. Doors opened to the public so children and families could visit the baby chicks hatched at the bank earlier this month.

TIFFIN– Matt Harding’s Clear Creek Amana (CCA) girls’ varsity soccer team opened the 2015 season with a pair of wins, destroying the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks 10-0 and taking down rival Solon, 4-1.

Clipper girls fifth at home meet

TIFFIN– The sun shined brightly but a stiff northwest wind with gusts around 40 mph made for chilly conditions Friday, April 10, as the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) girls track and field team hosted their Creek Classic Relays. The Clippers finished fifth in overall team points behind winner Solon, Mount Vernon, South Tama and Williamsburg.
Corrine Schwarting won the long jump with a 16’-5 1/2” leap; Mia Smith, Schwarting, Megan Lukas and Natalie Brimeyer took their shuttle hurdle relay to the win in 1:07.90 and Brimeyer won the 100-meter hurdles in 15.66 seconds.
