West escapes CR Prairie undefeated

CEDAR RAPIDS– The West High Trojans survived their greatest threat so far this season, escaping from Cedar Rapids Prairie with a 21-14 win and keeping their record perfect at 4-0.
“Prairie plays us tougher than anybody,” coach Brian Sauser said after the win on a bizarre night. “It’s fun when we get out there and score 50, 60 points. But to gut-out a win in a tough place to play is huge.”

West Cross-Country in action in Ames

Girls third, Boys 17th on tough course

AMES– Both boys and girls cross country squads were in action for Iowa City West High Saturday, Sept. 21, at the 7th Roosevelt-Heartland Classic on the Iowa State University’s cross country course.
“It was a tough meet today,” boys coach Brian Martz said, “both the competition and the course.” The boys finished 17th as a team in a field of 35. Edina, Minn., won the boys’ 5K run with 134 points, the Trojans were 17th with 449.
Daniel Gardarsson continued to lead the way for West, putting in a fourth-place finish in 15:59.0.

Women of Troy sweep Rams

DUBUQUE– The West High Women of Troy improved their record to 11-5-0 with a 3-0 sweep of the Dubuque Senior Rams Tuesday, Sept. 17, on the road. West dominated the match 25-8, 25-10 and 25-12.
Ali Tauchen, a freshman, led the offense with nine kills while junior Laynie Whitehead had eight. Emily Halverson, a freshman, and senior Toni Martins had five kills each, senior Mollie Mason made four and Lizzy Klemme (senior) and Mikaela Morgan put up three kills apiece.

CCA can’t stop Spartans’ drive

SOLON– If you looked at the offensive stats, this game didn’t look bad for Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) Clippers.
But if you looked at the score, it was another story.
The Clippers traveled to Solon Friday evening and ended up as fodder for the Spartans’ Homecoming celebration in a 42-7 loss, moving the Clippers to a 1-3 record and a third consecutive loss.
The Clippers racked up over 300 yards of offense, but penalties and miscues plagued CCA.

Clippers fall in five to Indians

MARION– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers varsity volleyball team lost a hard-fought battle Tuesday, Sept. 17, on the road at Marion, falling 3-2 to the Indians.
The Creek girls took the opening set 25-22 before dropping the next two 26-25 and 25-12. They rallied back to tie the match 2-2 with a 25-20 win, but came up short in the fifth and final set, 15-11.

Venenga named North Liberty police chief

Diane Venenga has been named North Liberty’s police chief by the city’s mayor, Tom Salm. The North Liberty City Council will vote on the appointment at its next meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 24. Venenga, who has served as the interim chief since February, will take the post permanently following council’s approval.
