Curbside Christmas tree pick-up Jan. 4 and 11

NORTH LIBERTY– Christmas trees will be picked up curbside on Wednesday, Jan. 4 and 11. Trees must be bare of all decorations or flocking. Do not place trees in plastic bags. Please have trees at the curb by 7 a.m.

2017 pet tags now available

NORTH LIBERTY– It is now time to purchase your pet tags for 2017. Cats and dogs are required to wear tags that may be purchased at city hall for $2. Owners must provide verification of their pet being spayed/neutered to receive this rate. A nonspayed/nonneutered pet requires a fee of $25.
A tag provides identification in the event a pet is lost. The registration of an animal helps the city to ensure that all animals in the city are up to date with vaccines.
Dogs and cats must be kept on their owners’ property or on a leash at all times. Pets found “at large” will be impounded.

Hockey night with the Rough Riders Jan. 20 in Cedar Rapids

CEDAR RAPIDS– It’s a night to spend in Cedar Rapids cheering on the Rough Riders hockey team in a face-off with the Youngstown Phantoms.
Discounted tickets for Friday, Jan. 20, at 7:05 p.m. will be offered to all interested. Individuals must provide their own transportation.
Order tickets at 319-261-GOAL and mention “North Liberty” for the discount. Tickets are $10.75–$16.75, based on zone.

Citywide snowman contest Dec. 1 through Feb. 28

NORTH LIBERTY– Build a snowman in any city park or your yard between Dec. 1 and Feb. 28, take a photo and submit it to Jason Egly at jegly@northlibertyiowa.org along with your name, contact information and where the snowman was built. Entries will be displayed at the North Liberty Community Center and online to be judged by recreation staff.The winning family receives prize!

North Liberty couple creates annual “Gingerbread House”

NORTH LIBERTY– You may as well call them Mr. and Mrs. Kris Kringle.
The Crandalls– with a name uncannily close to the Christmas gift bearer– have delivered seasonal joy year after year with their holiday light display on Troon Court in North Liberty.
“Pretty much everybody expects it,” said Lorrie Crandall. “We’ll just be sitting out in the summertime and people will drive by and say, ‘We love your Christmas house!’ It really started because we enjoyed taking our kids around to see the lights when they were little. We ended up being one of those houses people go see.”

Pop-up makerspace Dec. 27 at NLRC

NORTH LIBERTY– Active Learners Pop-up Makerspace is a welcoming environment where kids can play, make and create. The North Liberty Recreation Center will host a Makerspace Tuesday, Dec. 27, from 12-2 p.m.
The two-hour, fun, student-led workshop consists of five to six maker stations. Each maker station has a theme, such as engineering, circuitry, LEGO, or arts and crafts, where kids are encouraged to integrate design and creativity.
There will also be active movement games on the big screen via an Xbox system.
Sign up is required and can be done at the North Liberty Recreation Center.

Holiday hours announced for city offices

NORTH LIBERTY– Hours for city offices and services will adjusted in the coming weeks. Regular hours will be held except for the following:
On Friday, Dec. 23, the recreation center will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The library and city offices will be closed.
On Saturday, Dec. 24, and Sunday, Dec. 25, the library, recreation center and all city offices will be closed.
On Monday, Dec. 26, the library will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the recreation center will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

IOWA CITY– North Liberty residents shouldn’t be surprised by the Iowa City Community School District’s (ICCSD) latest enrollment projections, which predict rapid growth in the numbers of students at all levels in the Liberty High attendance zone.

Friends of Coralville Lake to enhance the Coralville Lake area

CORALVILLE– The Friends of Coralville Lake (FoCL) invite the public to a meeting Wednesday, Jan. 18, at the Coralville Lake Welcome Center (2850 Prairie Du Chien Rd. NE, Iowa City) at 6:30 p.m. to share information with the community and respond to questions.
Incorporated on June 16, FoCL is a volunteer-driven organization that works with the U.S. Corp of Engineers to enhance the recreational and aesthetic value of the Coralville Lake area.

Happy tummies, happy holidays

North Liberty Optimists deliver kid-friendly snacks to the Family Resource Center (FRC) at Penn Elementary. This marks the 12th year the groups have come together to distribute holiday food baskets to North Liberty families with kids on free and reduced lunch. “When you have kids who come to school for breakfast and lunch, and family at Christmastime has to feed them all that extra, that can be a real burden,” said Kris Hynek, FRC director at Penn. The optimists deliver enough food to feed 85 families.

Police Department pledges against tobacco

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Police Department has taken a pledge to keep tobacco, alternative nicotine and vapor products out of the hands of North Liberty youth as part of I-PLEDGE, a partnership with the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division (ABD) to educate local retailers and to enforce Iowa’s tobacco, alternative nicotine and vapor product laws.

TIFFIN– Vikings have been celebrated in popular lore as a band of ruffians pillaging and plundering all in their path. Tuesday, Dec. 13, the Vikings of Vinton-Shellsburg lived up to that moniker as they rolled over the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers, 73-38, in a WaMaC conference varsity match up in Tiffin.
