Better eating, one food group at a time

JOHNSON COUNTY– Becky Schmooke gives new meaning to the term “food for thought.”
In fact, the proprietor of Becky’s Mindful Kitchen Cookery School loves to teach everyone new ways to think about their food.
Schmooke is a personal food consultant with the mission of raising awareness about the foods we consume, where they come from, how they are processed, and how they affect our overall well-being.
Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 24, Schmooke said she had always eaten well and exercised, but the auto-immune disorder in her body took her by surprise.

Free English classes, children’s homework assistance now offered at NL’s First United Methodist Church

NORTH LIBERTY– Everyone is welcome to join in free English classes for adults and homework help and literacy instruction for children at First United Methodist Church, 85 N. Jones Blvd. every Monday evening.
The start time is 6:15 p.m., with classes running from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. If anyone needs help with transportation, the program will provide van service to and from the church. Volunteers to help transport participants are always welcome and appreciated.

Trojans roll Little Hawks 30-6 in annual battle

IOWA CITY– They got it back.
Last year, cross-town rival City High won the traveling trophy known as “The Boot” with a 14-7 win at City. The loss was the first of only two in what became a 9-2 season for the Trojans.
This year, the West High crew already had two losses (27-6 against West Des Moines Valley and 28-0 to Cedar Rapids Washington) in the books ahead of facing the Little Hawks in a bid for bragging rights and the coveted Boot. On the other side of the ball was a Little Hawk crew looking for its first win of the 2014 season.

CCA moves to 2-0 in Class 3A

FORT MADISON– Week four of the high school football season found the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers on the road in Fort Madison to meet the Hounds. The Clippers sailed to a 28-8 victory putting the hounds back in their kennels and improving to a 3-1 record overall and 2-0 in Class 3A District No. 5.

Top-10 finish for CCA Middle School runner Barker

TIPTON– The junior varsity and varsity races were cancelled at the Tipton Cross Country Invitational, held in Tipton’s City Park on Tuesday, Sept. 9. However, the middle school runners soldiered on in a 1.5-mile course.
Clear Creek Amana (CCA) sent a handful of runners with Kaylie Barker and Ally Loren representing the girls and Noah McNeil and Trevor King for the boys.
Barker, an eighth grader, finished seventh in 10:39 to lead the Clippers. Loren, also an eighth grader, was 44th in 12:24. McNeil, a seventh grader, was 34th in 10:59 while King, also in seventh grade, was 36th in 11:04.

Trojans outpace Little Hawks at City’s XC invitational

IOWA CITY– The West High cross country Trojans won rival City High’s Little Hawk Invitational Thursday, Sept. 18, at the University of Iowa’s Ashton Cross Country Course. The Trojans’ 37 team points bought the win. City High was fourth in the four-team field with 68.
Akash Borde led West with a third-place finish in 16:22.2.
In junior varsity action (JV), City High prevailed with 26 team points to win, with the Trojans a close second with 29. Ethan Trepka led the JV boys for West with a third-place finish in 18:17.6.

Women of Troy sixth at City High invitational

IOWA CITY– The West High Women of Troy finished the 2014 Little Hawk Invitational swim meet with a sixth-place finish in team points Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Mercer Park Aquatics Center in Iowa City. Cedar Falls won the meet with 398 points while host City High was eighth with 95. Ten teams competed for 2,080 total points awarded.
West’s Jacintha Thomas won the 1-meter diving event with a score of 515.35 while teammate Alex Aaberg was second with a score of 438. Erica Hsu won the 200-yard IM in 2:14.21 and finished second in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:18.40.

Flying Colors

OXFORD– It’s a colorful way to make some green.
Clear Creek Elementary (CCE) will host the second annual CCE Color Fun Run/Walk 5K Saturday, Sept. 27, at 9 a.m., and the public is invited.
The race/walk is open to anyone who wants to have fun and is up for helping a good cause.
CCE’s Parent Teacher Group (PTG) was searching for a way to involve more families in its annual school-wide fundraisers. PTG members often heard similar comments from parents when it came time for kids to sell wrapping paper, magazines, chocolate or other traditional fundraising products door-to-door.

ICCSD board sends controversial policy back to committee

IOWA CITY– The Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) paused at its Sept. 9 school board meeting, as it prepared to implement the district’s diversity policy approved in 2013.
During a lengthy discussion of the policy and related attendance zone changes for the 2015-2016 school year, the board responded to Superintendent Steve Murley’s request for relief from diversity policy mandates. The board sent the diversity policy back to the policy and engagement committee for revision on a 6-1 vote, with Director Orville Townsend Sr. dissenting.

NL council questioned about city’s sign regulations

NORTH LIBERTY– “You may have noticed North Liberty is tough on signs.”
North Liberty City Planner Dean Wheatley offers this initial statement in a website tutorial on the improper display of signs around town.
People have noticed, in fact, and some think the city is even a bit extreme.
Rob Hajek, owner of North Liberty remodeling business Home Repair Team and HRT Building, came before the council last Tuesday to ask if the city would consider changes to its sign ordinance to accommodate businesses like his that use yard signs as a promotional tool.

Free child health and safety fair to be held Sept. 20

NORTH LIBERTY– The public is invited to First United Methodist Church of North Liberty to enjoy the annual free child health and safety fair Saturday, Sept. 20. First United Methodist Church is located at 85 N. Jones Blvd., about a block south of the corner of Penn Street and North Jones Boulevard.
