Great horned owl released after rehab

Raptor group responds to call from Twin View

By Joe Wilkinson

SOLON– It was January. A curious Labrador came within five feet of the scrawny, young owl. The terrified bird perched on a low branch, west of Solon, on public land. It didn’t move. The outlook was bleak.
Fast-forward six weeks. A small crowd walks through the trees to the same spot, near the Coralville Reservoir. With heavy duty gloves, Lacey Slutts reaches into the cardboard pet carrier she totes. From inside, drumming wingbeats indicate the occupant is more than ready to exit.

Spartans edged by Wahlert, then defeats Williamsburg in regular season finale

DAVENPORT– Dubuque Wahlert’s 5-15 record coming into the Class 3A District 7 playoffs was deceptive.
The Golden Eagles played a 4A schedule, with a fistful of single-digit losses to established programs and wins against Cedar Falls and Cedar Rapids Jefferson.
Solon’s Spartans entered the 3A district basketball semifinals with a record of 13-8 and had just ended the regular season with a resounding 53-34 win over Williamsburg.
The two clashed in Davenport Monday, Feb. 20, and despite scraping back to take a fourth-quarter lead, the Spartans fell in a 71-68 cliffhanger.

Reflections from a wrestling coach

Special to the Economist

Written after losing the team state dual final, 45-23, to New Hampton
As a wrestling coach for the past 10 years, I would consider every team I’ve worked with a special team. That being said, some teams stand out among the excellent and rise to a higher level. This was most certainly the case for this year’s Solon wrestling team. When speaking of excellence, it is not necessarily warranted with on-mat accomplishments, although this team has many.
