Girls send 14 to state

Four field events, six relays, three individuals

SOLON– Senior Sophie Nicol’s track season has gone a little rough.
“I was sick. There was an injury,” she said. “I spent the longest time getting my endurance back, trying to qualify for state.”
She has run just about every distance in her four year high school career. It took the toughest one, in the state qualifier, to make her statement.

Vikettes triumph over Lady Spartans in soccer, 3-1

SOLON– The Spartan Stadium was aglow most of the week. Friday night, May 11, was no different as the Lady Spartans soccer team hosted the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes, falling prey to them, 3-1, under the lights.
After about 20 minutes of offensive and defensive transitions, working up and back on the field, the Vikettes scored to take the lead, 1-0, with 19:13 aglow atop the Spartans’ scoreboard.

Spartan boys track and field team 5th in 3A qualifier

SOLON– Coach Mark Sovers posted to Twitter on Thursday evening, May 9, a picture of the empty Spartan Stadium track’s lanes, with the sunset-illuminated school in the background, empty. The caption accompanying the picture read, “Reflecting on the incredible opportunity to coach such unselfish, relationship driven athletes. Looking forward to the best version of who we are shining through. #humble”
Spartan Stadium lights blazed on Thursday, May 10, as Solon hosted a coed Class 3A qualifying track meet.

Varsity boys 2nd, JV boys 3rd at WaMaC East coed meet

SOLON– The Solon Spartan boys track and field teams, junior varsity (JV) and varsity, both flourished at the WaMaC East Divisional Championship meet, finishing third and second, respectively on Monday, May 7, postponed from Thursday, May 3, due to inclement weather, at Spartan Stadium.

e-cigs banned from public places

Council passes e-cigarette ordinance

SOLON– If you’re somewhere in Solon where you can’t smoke a real cigarette, you now can’t use an e-cigarette either.
At a May 4 meeting, Solon City Council members passed the third and final reading of an ordinance banning alternative nicotine and vapor products from use in areas defined as smoke-free by the state.
The ordinance, introduced at an April 4 session, adopts Chapter 142D of the Code of Iowa, known as the “Smokefree Air Act,” and amended the law to include newer nicotine delivery systems.

New Farmers Market opens May 29

SOLON– The Solon Farmers Market will be located in the parking lot of Mushroom Park on Tuesdays, from 3-6 p.m., starting May 29. Other days the market will be open are Sunday, May 27 (Solon firefighters breakfast), and Saturday, June 2 (weekend of Solon garage sales). The hours those days are 8-11 a.m. For vendor information, go to the city website, www.solon-iowa.com and open the Solon Farmers Market page.

Solon Legion Memorial Day services

SOLON– The Solon American Legion Family will be hosting Memorial Day Services at Legion Park at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 28. Transportation will be available from the Legion to the Legion Memorial. Plan on being at the Legion by 7:30 a.m. for a ride to the Legion Memorial. Refreshments at the Legion will follow the ceremony.
The Veterans Trail Ceremony will be at the East Overlook Park by the Coralville Dam at 1:30 p.m.
Evening service will be at the Sutliff Bridge at 9 p.m. This service is to honor those that were lost at sea.
Please plan on attending these services.

Poppy Days in Solon, May 19-28

SOLON– Each year, the American Legion Auxiliary distributes poppies to commemorate the sacrifice of our servicemen and women who gave their lives in our country’s wars.
The tradition of the memorial flower honoring the war dead began after WWI when returning soldiers brought memories of the battlefield poppies which were immortalized in Canadian Colonel John McCrae’s poem “In Flander’s Fields” whose opening lines are familiar to millions around the world:
“In Flander’s fields the poppies blow,
Between the crosses row on row...”

Solon alum Sydney Lawson batting in the Big Ten

CORALVILLE– Former Solon Lady Spartan Sydney Lawson, daughter of Gene and Christine Lawson from Solon, is swinging the pine in the Big Ten this season.
The Wisconsin Badgers visited the University of Iowa Softball field in Coralville for three games in two days– a doubleheader held on Saturday, April 7, and the final game Sunday, April 8.
Although the Badgers did not fair well against the Hawkeyes, falling 3-0, 4-3 and 5-3 in the three games, attendees got an opportunity to see the Solon High School graduate play in her Big Ten debut on Sunday and get her first Big Ten hit.

Supervisors get an earful at public hearing

Young farmers argue for changing agricultural exemption

IOWA CITY– Young farmers in Johnson County raised their voices loud and clear to the board of supervisors: change or scrap the county’s agricultural exemption policy.
The young guns blazed away during a Thursday, May 10, public hearing on the proposed county comprehensive plan, citing the immense difficulties many budding farmers encounter in trying to purchase 40 acres (the minimum amount of land required to be considered a “farm” in Johnson County).
