Let’s do it again

Solon COVID-19 clinic finishes second dose

SOLON– It went just as smoothly the second time around.
Over 1,100 people received their second dose of a COVID-19 vaccination Friday and Saturday, March 19-20, in Solon.
Towncrest Pharmacy partnered with Solon Senior Advocates, Solon United Methodist Church, the City of Solon, Johnson County Emergency Management Agency (JCEMA) and Public Health (JCPH) and local residents to host a vaccine clinic on Friday, Feb. 26, and Saturday, Feb. 27, at the Methodist Church’s Family Life Center.

Rec programs rebound

City sticking with emphasis on outdoor activities

SOLON– Business is picking up for the Solon Recreation Department.
Recreation Director Tom Harder reported strong numbers for spring soccer and a full slate of expanded programs for summer during a Solon City Council meeting March 17.
“Our numbers are basically right where they were pre-COVID, which is great,” Harder said after the meeting.
Soccer registration closed with over 250 kids signed up for 33 teams across pre-kindergarten through sixth grade, he said. Practice begins soon with games in early April.

It’s been such a long time

Solon boys playing soccer this spring

SOLON– The last game for the varsity Spartan soccer team was a 1-0 heartbreaker in a substate final at home against Iowa Mennonite.
May 25, 2019.
It’s been almost two years since the team took the field after the COVID-19 pandemic forced the closure of schools and the cancelation of spring sports in 2020.
Solon could be understandably rusty when it opens the season hosting its own varsity tournament Saturday, April 3. Scrimmages are scheduled for March 25 and March 27, and the Spartans will participate in the Cedar Rapids Prairie Jamboree March 30.

Solon girls show up big at Central sponsored indoor track meet

PELLA– Early season high school track meets in Iowa are inside. The track is shorter. The curves are tighter. But they offer an early peek at the season ahead. With a couple indoor meets now behind them, some bright spots are beginning to glow for Solon’s girls.
“I feel good about every distance. We may not yet have the four solid runners we will need for the relays in every distance,” underscored head girls coach Brent Sands, after a March 20 Central College-sponsored indoor meet in Pella. “Still, we should be really good in the 400-800-meter range.”

Here’s the mail

Eric Morgan celebrates a year as Solon’s postmaster

SOLON– You’d be hard-pressed to find anyone happier to see warmer temperatures than Solon Postmaster Eric Morgan.
“Very excited to see the snow gone, as is my staff,” he noted.
Morgan, 35, took up the post in Solon Jan. 19, 2020, and celebrated his anniversary in the middle of a prolonged deep freeze, but feels lucky to be here.
“My experience here has been fantastic,” he said. “It’s honestly just a great city filled with small town charm while still developing as the days pass.”

Melissa Holtz named principal at SIS

Holtz was thrilled to accept the position.

Small rural rezoning request passed to P&Z

Three-lot subdivide sought west of Solon

SOLON– City council members asked the Planning and Zoning (P&Z) Commission to review a modest rezoning request within the two-mile fringe area.
In January, Jim and Julie Agne of rural Solon, made application to Johnson County seeking to rezone 7.5 acres of land west of Solon from a mix of residential and agricultural to just residential.
Because the property, located off Highway 382 and Polk Avenue, resides within two miles of the city limits, the application was sent to the City of Solon and considered by council members at a March 3 meeting.

Lady Spartan Callie Levin earns First-Team All-State Honor

WEST DES MOINES– Solon freshman Callie Levin made an impression on the hardwood in the WaMaC East Conference earlier this season, so much so it garnered her First-Team All-State Honors from the Iowa Girls Coaches Association on Monday, March 8, during recognition of worthy performances in Class 3A.
At 5-9, Levin spearheaded the Lady Spartans’ 2020-2021 campaign ending with a 17-6 record, after posting nine wins in the 2019-2020 season, and earning Solon a WaMaC East Conference title before exiting the postseason in a Class 3A regional final.

DES MOINES– The Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) announced, following its regular Board of Control meeting on Thursday, March 11, new group assignments for the 2021 and 2022 football seasons.
