By Doug Lindner
Solon Economist

SOLON– It’s a tight budget for the second year in a row.
Solon city staff, elected representatives and appointed officials met together at a Jan. 8 Solon City Council meeting to grind out the details of the 2014-2015 budget.
Early figures put the budget over $40,000 in the red, but by the end of Wednesday’s lengthy meeting, it appeared the city was close to balancing its expenses and revenues.

Adjustments for (almost) all of God’s creatures

Dr. Helen Beck, one of a growing number of animal chiropractors

RURAL SOLON– As you pull into the driveway of Jake and Helen Beck’s home, a pair of horses trot over to the fence to look you over.
It’s no surprise the equines are there. Horses have been a large part of Helen’s life, and now they make up most of her veterinary practice.
Helen Beck, DVM, provides veterinary care, primarily to horses. She’s also one of a growing number of animal chiropractors providing adjustments to traditional family pets such as dogs and cats, with the background and knowledge to care for almost any of God’s creatures, great or small.

Start date, end date an issue again

SOLON– Remember last year when the Solon school board was split over the start date for school?
Are you ready for round two?
At Monday night’s school board meeting, the start and end dates for the 2014-15 school year were discussed, but this time, an informal poll showed board members leaning the other way.
Last year, board president Dave Asprey broke a 2-2 tie, going against the recommendation of the district’s calendar committee and siding with board members in favor of a later start date for school.
