Our Lord’s Church Fall Festival fundraiser Oct. 19

SOLON– Our Lord’s Church will hold its ninth annual Fall Festival Saturday, Oct. 19, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the church, located at 131 N. Market St., Solon.

scouting for food in Solon: Pick-up Saturday, Oct. 12

SOLON– The Cub Scouts and boy scouts will be out this week (Oct. 5 through 10) handing out bags in their neighborhoods. They will be back out on Oct. 12 to pick up food left in the bags for them. All the food collected in the Solon area will be going to the Solon Community Food Pantry at the Solon United Methodist Church. The drop off for food will also be at the church.

Lady Spartans overwhelm Raiders

SOLON– The Anamosa volleyball team looked like a deer in the headlights.
The Solon Lady Spartans rattled off 10 straight points behind the serving of junior Taylor Nearad and never looked back, sweeping the Anamosa Raiders 3-0 in a conference match-up last Tuesday in Solon.
Nearad was a serving machine for the Lady Spartans, going 24-27 with 10 aces from behind the service line. No other Lady Spartan had more than seven serves.
Solon won 25-6, 25-12 and 25-6, with liberal substitutions throughout the match.

Spartans roll up 64-3 win over Anamosa Raiders

SOLON– It didn’t take long to see where this game was going.
Solon’s Jordan Wymer took the opening kickoff 97 yards down the Spartan sideline for a touchdown, and it was off to the races.
Moments later, Solon intercepted Anamosa quarterback Austin Seehusen deep in Raider territory. Two passes to Nathan Hawkins later, there was less than a minute elapsed on the clock, and Solon had taken a 14-0 lead over the winless Anamosa Raiders.
The Spartans rumbled to a 64-3 win Friday night, moving their record to 5-1 on the season, and an unblemished 3-0 in conference play.

Dock hosting Solon jazz combos

SOLON– The Dock Restaurant is hosting a Solon Music Night on Thursday, Oct. 3, from 5:30 until 7 p.m. Patrons can enjoy the musical talents of several Solon jazz ensembles while dining at the Dock, and 10 percent of all food sales will be donated to the Solon High School Music Department.

Legion hosts veterans memorial dedication, flag retirement Oct. 6

SOLON– The Solon American Legion will host a veterans memorial dedication at the memorial site on Sunday, Oct. 6, at 1 p.m. Following the dedication ceremony, there will be a flag retirement ceremony at the ball park. The flag retirement ceremony is sponsored by the American Legion, the American Legion Auxiliary, Sons of the American Legion, and Boy Scout Troop #120. There will be a rain date of Oct. 20.
Refreshments will be served at the American Legion following both ceremonies.

Solon Learning Academy directors working to reach capacity

SOLON– Solon Learning Academy directors Kristin Struzynski and Emily Devereux said it’s a requirement for all employees to love kids.
“I could be here all day, everyday,” Devereux said.
“We are,” Struzynski said. “And we love it.”
The new Solon-based daycare opened on Aug. 5 at its new location on 201 Prairie Rose Ln. Solon Learning Academy has approximately 35 students signed-up, but the building has a capacity for 138 students. Currently, Devereux and Struznyski are working to reach the goal of filling all the slots.
