Spartans on The Blue Oval for Drake Relays

DES MOINES– A sure sign of spring in Iowa is a weekend of rain for the Drake Relays.
Rain fell on all three days of major activity on The Blue Oval at Drake University for the 107th edition of America’s Athletic Classic. However, it didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of 4,485 high school, college and elite class performers on and around the track, including 17 Olympic medalists, gearing up for the 2016 Rio Games in 10 weeks.

Solon girls beat South Tama and CCA on the links

TAMA– The Solon girls golf team traveled to the Tama-Toledo Country Club on Friday, April 29, to take on host South Tama and Clear Creek Amana (CCA). The Lady Spartans pulled away from the competition, posting a 205 team score. South Tama came in with a 225, and CCA a 232, respectively. Dani Carter was the medalist for the meet with a score of 46. Also contributing to the Solon score were Grace McCarty (51), Jenna Roskopf (53), and Reegan Helle (55). Julia DeValk posted a new career-low with a 56 and rounding out the varsity scores was Katie Feldkamp with a 63.

Solon girls fall to Central DeWitt and Maquoketa

SOLON– The Solon girls fell to 4-4 on the year after a 2-1 loss to Central DeWitt Friday on the home soccer pitch.
The Lady Spartans shot out to a quick 1-0 start and held it for a good part of the first half before two unanswered goals by No. 14 (2A) Central DeWitt’s Ashley Goldensoph and Maddie Johnson.
It was the second loss in a row for Solon, which dropped out of the Class 1A rankings established by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.
The Lady Spartans finished off their fourth road match in a row with a 3-2 loss to Maquoketa April 26.

Spartans fall to Regina, 3-2

IOWA CITY– The Spartan varsity soccer squad has been a team of streaks this season.
Solon started the year with five straight wins, and sandwiched two losses with three straight victories.
But with a 3-2 loss to Iowa City Regina on the road Saturday, April 30, the Solon boys have a string of four consecutive losses, with undefeated Dyersville Beckman awaiting the Spartans Tuesday, May 3.

Creating a Crisis Intervention Team

The deputies

Law enforcement agencies in Johnson County are embracing the concept of Crisis Intervention Training (CIT), an educational program for law enforcement officers which expands their ability to deal safely and effectively with people experiencing a mental health crisis.

Happy birthday, Tanner

Brad Wymer prepares to release a Chinese lantern in memory of his son, Tanner, during a special ceremony held during the Denny Gruber Coed Relays April 19 at the Solon Outdoor Events Center. Tanner, a Solon senior, was killed in a boating accident in January and would have turned 18 on April 19. A memorial bench has been installed near the thrower’s area at the track, and during a break in the meet, a moment of silence was held, those in attendance sang Happy Birthday, and family members, students and community members released a series of Chinese lanterns into the sky.

Density rising: More units, more cars, more complaints

Developer agrees to more parking stalls, but site plan still tabled

SOLON– The site plan submitted by Mike Bails and Jeff Mekota for two eight-plexes in the Fox Ridge subdivision met all of Solon’s requirements and was recommended for approval by the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission.
The Spartan Structures developers had already scaled back from 24 to 16 residential units based on city input and the site plan was on the agenda for council consideration at an April 20 meeting.

Saving more of the grove

Bur Oak Land Trust launches capital campaign to purchase more Big Grove timber

SOLON– Imagine you’re in the heart of Iowa City on a busy day– cars, people and concrete.
Now think about being 7 miles away, standing in the middle of the Bur Oak Land Trust’s Big Grove Preserve, a centuries-old forest populated with tall hardwoods– calm and quiet, broken only by the occasional songbird.
