By Lori Lindner

JOHNSON COUNTY– Increasingly, as state and federal dollars are cut from social assistance programs, local organizations and individuals are attempting to absorb the costs.
When a funding shortfall empties the plates of our nation’s elderly– those who rely on home-delivered meal programs like Meals on Wheels or who regularly attend congregate dining sites– it can become a matter of eating or going hungry.

Moving to higher ground

Volunteers from the Solon United Methodist Church youth groups and from United Action for Youth gathered in the brisk conditions at Randall Park Tuesday afternoon to help spread sand and mulch for the relocation of the park’s playground equipment. The city made the decision earlier this year to move the playground to higher ground after spring flooding eroded the base. (photos by Doug Lindner)

SOLON– When do you decide to close the doors on open enrollment?
The Solon school board discussed options for open enrollment benchmarks at the Dec. 9 meeting. Superintendent Sam Miller presented a framework that set parameters at which open enrollment could be closed at each grade level.
Though the number wasn’t a flat rate, most grades close at five students before target capacities, a level approved by the board last year.

“It was an exciting game,” said head coach Brad Randall. “It was good to come away with a win.”

Lady Spartans pick apart Mid-Prairie

Defense, 18 steals lead to second win of the season

SOLON– Defense was the key.
The Lady Spartans picked up their second win of the season over the weekend with a 50-37 victory over Mid-Prairie, part of a girls/boys doubleheader Saturday in Solon.
The Lady Spartans turned up the heat on Mid-Prairie, coming away with 18 steals and some transition opportunities.
“Our game plan against Mid-Prairie was to pressure their guards,” said Solon head coach Tony Nicol. “I thought Rylee Smith did a tremendous job of frustrating Mid Prairie’s point guard.”
