Spartans 3-0 to start season

SOLON– The Spartans have started the season on the right foot.
Solon’s varsity boys have opened the season 3-0, including a home win against the No. 1 ranked team in 1A, Waterloo Columbus.
According to head coach Jeremy McMurrin, the Spartans have moved up a class this season and are ranked No. 14 in Class 2A.
After a scoreless scrimmage against Cedar Rapids Xavier at the Cedar Rapids Washington Soccer Jamboree, the Spartans opened the season at home with a 2-1 win over No. 9 Iowa Mennonite April 1. Nick Brown and Brandan Childs scored goals for Solon, with an assist to Chase Gross.

Solon High School students collect shoes for those in need

SOLON– When it comes to community service, a handful of Solon High School students have created some mighty big shoes to fill.
When sophomores Kaytee Berstler, Sydney Gerdts, Kaitlin Hatcher, Taylor Nearad, Lake Reyhons and Jake Singkofer found themselves with time on their hands during the school day, they set about looking for a cause to support. Principal’s secretary Kim Blankenheim suggested they research an organization she had heard about called Soles4Souls, a charity that recycles shoes to be donated to those in need in the United States and more than 125 other countries.

Solon legion pancake breakfast April 14

SOLON– The Solon American Legion Veterans’ Memorial All You Can Eat Pancake Breakfast will be held Sunday, April 14, at the legion hall from 7 until 11:30 a.m. For $7 adults and $4 children 6-12 (children 5 and under eat free) you will be served pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, biscuits and gravy, juice, coffee and milk.
All proceeds go to the maintenance costs at the Veterans’ Memorial Monument.

Lakeview PTO’s second annual Spartan Dash fundraiser set for Saturday, April 27

SOLON– The Lakeview PTO will be hosting its second annual Spartan Dash on Saturday, April 27, rain or shine. The Spartan Dash is a fun and crazy fitness event that will serve as Lakeview PTO’s largest fundraiser of the year. Interested individuals should sign up to participate in the event with a family team. Family teams will walk, skip, or run through obstacles set up along the one-mile trail in the Solon Recreation and Nature Area. Obstacles will be suitable for both children and adults and are guaranteed to have you laughing.

Solon district budget back on track

Upgrades: enhanced security planned for middle school

SOLON– Things are looking up for the Solon school district’s budget.
Even though the state has not yet set the allowable growth rate for Iowa schools, it appears the Solon district will be able to lower its tax levy and take on a half-million dollars in summer improvements.
At a meeting Monday, March 11, members of the Solon Community School District (SCSD) Board of Education set an April 8 public hearing date for the $20 million 2013-2014 budget.

Runners get tunnel vision during off-road fundraiser

Solon Survivor Extreme 5K draws 90 runners

SOLON– Organizers for the Solon Survivor Extreme 5K were walking the planned race route looking for a safe place to cross Mehaffey Bridge Road when they all saw the culvert.
“A couple of us went through it and we knew immediately that this was going to be an extreme race,” said Brian Bock.
Bock was also one of the 90 participants in the off-road 5K held Saturday, March 9, as a fundraiser for the Solon Sluggers 12U baseball team and the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital. He finished fourth in just under 30 minutes.

Living Last Supper March 29 at SMS auditorium

SOLON– The Solon United Methodist Church performance of the Living Last Supper is scheduled for March 29 at 7 p.m. in the Solon Middle School Auditorium.
Leonardo da Vinci’s famous painting “The Last Supper” comes to life in this dramatic retelling of the night before Christ’s crucifixion. The audience will get the chance to hear from Mary (the Mother of Jesus), the 12 disciples and Christ himself. Discover what discipleship meant to them, learn how many of them were chosen, and relive the tragic betrayal of one.

March Storytime

Storytime is a program every Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. for children ages two through five, featuring stories, songs and rhymes followed by a craft. Younger siblings are also welcome to attend. Until a new youth services librarian has been hired, we will have a special guest Storytime leader, Debb Green.

Meal and a Movie to feature “Lincoln” March 29

SOLON– “Lincoln,” the movie that won two Academy Awards, is the featured film for the Meal and a Movie, Friday, March 29, at 11 a.m. at the Solon Public Library. Daniel Day-Lewis, who received Best Actor Award, and Sally Field star. Lincoln’s favorite meal, chicken and apple pie, catered by Lori, will comprise the meal. Solon Lady Spartans tackle indoor meets

A cold, snowy March has made indoor track meets a popular venue. Though events and entries are limited with shorter tracks and limited space, they provide a good look for coaches and athletes ahead of the end-of-March through May outdoor season.
Through three indoor meets, Solon’s girls are providing some of the answers. Still, with spring break taking away a large share of the team… and this week’s first outdoor meet cancelled, there are plenty of questions.
