Out of the crowd for top-25 finish

Conway 22nd at state meet

FORT DODGE– Even with a little sun breaking through by noon, it was still 40 degrees when the starter’s gun went off for the Class 3A girls state cross country championship Saturday. “It was very crowded in the first mile. I was blocked in from front and back,” recalled Solon freshman Kiersten Conway.
She’s been in big races before. It was very similar to her middle school state race with Iowa Speed Camp a year ago. “But here, they were in high school... and there were more of them,” said Conway. One hundred-thirty-eight to be exact, across the rolling hills north of Fort Dodge.

City doesn’t want to take lead on Gallery Acres West

City: DNR not helping with water issue

SOLON– The city can’t investigate providing rural water if it doesn’t know how many local subdivisions would be interested.
And the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is apparently not very interested in helping determine that number.
According to discussions at the Oct. 18 meeting of the Solon City Council, the DNR stepped back from its lead role in determining whether municipal water could help resolve arsenic issues in developments outside the city.
For the city’s elected officials, the news brought their interest in researching the problem to a screeching halt.

Revised site plan approved

Alley dining for new restaurant scaled back

SOLON– Everything’s okay now.
After two weeks to iron things out, two prospective Main Street neighbors have mended the fence.
As a result, the members of the Solon City Council, at an Oct. 18 meeting, unanimously approved a revised site plan for a new restaurant at 122 E. Main St., the former location of the Solon Station.
The site plan was tabled at an Oct. 4 session after Salt Fork Kitchen owners Jay Schworn and Eric Menzel said they had not been approached about a plan to use an alley between the two buildings as an outdoor dining area.
