Antique presenters return Aug. 23 for Senior Conversations roadshow

SOLON– The Solon Public Library is hosting the first Antique Roadshowing Wednesday, Aug. 23, from 9 a.m. until noon for the August Senior Conversations. Dick Taber and Michelle Juehring, expert antique presenters who spoke at the June conversations’ event on various ways to pass on family valuables, will return to perform appraisals for a modest charge.
So much interest in the June event prompted this exciting follow-up. Fifteen-to 20-minute appointments may be made for either antique items or jewelry pieces by calling 624-2710.

Miller, Linderbaum, Harris and Hofsommer 2nd team; Weetman and Bandy Honorable Mention WaMaC East All-Conference 2017

SOLON– WaMaC East All-Confence 2017 Baseball selections were announced and included six Solon Spartans.
Junior infielder Luke Ira captured First Team WaMaC East All-Conference, unanimous selection honors for his performance during the 2017 season. Ira batted .519, recording 54 hits, 11 doubles, three triples, four home runs, and 14 stolen bases during his 2017 season.

Spartan football Preferred parking available now

SOLON– Beginning Tuesday, Aug. 1, the Solon Community School District will be selling preferred parking spaces for Friday night and postseason football games. There are 43 spots in the Spartan Stadium lot and 12 of those spaces will be reserved for handicapped parking that will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis at each home football game for cars with the appropriate handicapped plate or hanging mirror permit. Of the remaining spaces, seven will be reserved for game day administration, with the other 24 made available to the community for purchase.

Makayla Lindemann crowned Queen at Johnson County Fair

IOWA CITY– The Johnson County Fair Board announced Makayla Lindemann, of Solon, was crowned Johnson County Fair Queen 2017 on Monday, July 24, during the final round of the queen pageant. Lindemann is the daughter of David and Brenda Lindemann, a member of the McBride’s Pride 4-H club, and recently graduated from Solon High School. Lindemann will participate in the Iowa State Fair Queen Pageant in August. Creigh Rourke, of Iowa City, daughter of Rich and Mandy Rourke, was crowned Fair Princess.

Spartan Trapshooting Team can drive Saturday, July 29

SOLON– The Solon Spartan Trapshooting Team will host a can drive to raise funds to support its 2017-2018 season.
The can drive will be Saturday, July 29, at the Solon Recreation and Nature Area. Donations may be dropped off between 8 a.m. and noon. Team members will also be driving around town collecting donations during those time. Pickups can be scheduled by calling Kelly at 319-331-7962.

Advocates to tour Villages of Van Buren County Thursday, Aug. 17

SOLON– The Solon Senior Advocates have scheduled a trip Thursday, Aug. 17, to tour the Villages of Van Buren County. The trip leaves from the Solon Recreation and Nature Area at 7 a.m., stops for the step-on guide to arrive at Morris Park. The tour begins with a view of an 1800 barn and a feast on homemade cinnamon rolls. Next a visit to Millard’s turtle farm, then on to Bentonsport Indian Artifact Museum and the National Historic District.

New school facilites on track for 2018

SOLON– It’s been a constant rumble of construction for the Solon Community School District.
But the end is just over a year away, if all goes according to plan.
The school system is in the midst of a substantial facilities upgrade which includes two new buildings and two additions to the high school. School officials provided an update on progress at a joint meeting of the city council and school board July 10.
It’s an annual get-together for the two local elected bodies to discuss current projects, anticipated growth and possible areas of cooperation.

District open to all options for middle school use

SOLON– What are you going to do with the vacated middle school?
It’s not a question the Solon Community School District is in a hurry to answer, but it’s been posed and was discussed at a joint meeting of the city council and school board July 10.
“We’ve been wrestling with that and discussing it as a board ever since a decision was made that we were going to build new,” Superintendent Davis Eidahl told city council members. “Right now we’ve just been ears open and gathering suggestions for use of the facility we’re vacating portions of.”

Family Day at the Iowa Raptor Project Saturday, Aug. 5

SOLON– Join the Iowa Raptor Project for its monthly Family Day on Saturday, Aug. 5, form 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
August’s featured raptor is the Harris’s hawk. Learn about the bird and enjoy some arts and crafts and snacks. This event is free and open to the public.

CBJ Corporate Battle of the Bands

NORTH LIBERTY– The Corridor Business Journal (CBJ) has unveiled the lineup for its second-annual Corporate Battle of the Bands, including an appearance by The Hopping Iguanas, which is comprised of Solon Community School District employees.
The event, which will showcase six company-sponsored bands, will be held from 6-9 p.m. Aug. 24 at Big Grove Brewery in Iowa City.

Riding high

You could hear Makayla Keller of Solon screaming a block away from the Rock Star ride at Solon Beef Days Saturday, July 22. Keller was among the throng of people who took to carnival rides, participated in contests like the bean bag tournament and the hay bale toss, or took in the free entertainment at the 2017 edition of Solon’s annual summer event.
