Women’s Club makes Music Camperships available

SOLON– The General Federation of Women’s Club (GFWC) and Iowa Women’s club sponsors several music campership awards for deserving sixth-12th grade students. These awards can be applied toward tuition and room and board at a summer music camp within Iowa. Camperships are awarded in the amount of $400. Award recipients are responsible for the balance of their costs.

Solon Booster Club “Celebration of School Athletics” Feb. 28

SOLON– The Solon Athletic Booster Club is holding its first annual “Celebration of Solon Athletics” on Friday, Feb. 28, at Lake Macbride Golf Course. Tickets for the event are $25 per person with all proceeds benefiting the Solon Athletic Booster Club in support of Solon High School and Middle School athletics.
The schedule for the evening will be as follows:
6 p.m.: Doors open (cash bar available to patrons);
7 p.m.: Dinner: (roast beef or chicken, potatoes, and salad);
Entertainment: Solon Jazz Band performance (pre-dinner and dinner);

Synergy named Grand Champions

Solon MS show choir with early season success

JOHNSTON– Synergy, one of two show choirs at Solon Middle School, recently opened its season competing at Johnston and Dallas Center-Grimes. On Friday, Jan. 24, Solon competed at Johnston Showzam, which featured mostly 4A schools from the Des Moines and Omaha metro areas. Solon took first place in Class 3A, and finished third overall in the nine-team field, placing only behind Urbandale and Omaha Westside. Special recognition went to eighth grader Ellie Hawkins, who received the competition’s Best Female Soloist award.

Solon finishes sixth in 15-team conference tourney

INDEPENDENCE– Lance Evans and Louis Gnida won their respective weight classes at the WaMaC wrestling tournament over the weekend, helping the Spartans to a sixth-place finish.
Heavyweight Logan Linderbaum finished third Saturday at Independence
Solon finished sixth in the 15-team tournament with 133.5 team points, sandwiched between Central DeWitt and Mount Vernon. Independence and West Delaware tied for the first place team title with 218.5 points.

Head coach Brad Randall returns to team after complaint investigation

SOLON– The Solon boys basketball team won at home but lost on the road last week as it welcomed head coach Brad Randall back to the bench.
Randall returned to coaching Jan. 27, the day before the Spartans hosted winless Independence for a 72-49 win.
Solon also defeated Maquoketa 54-43 at home Friday, but suffered a 20-point loss on the road Thursday in a makeup game against Dyersville Beckman, 55-35.
“It was good to be back on the sidelines,” said Randall of the Independence win. “A lot of guys played and a lot of guys scored.”
