SOLON– 4-H is a community of young people across America learning leadership, citizenship and life skills.
Youth grades 4-12 are eligible to join a primary club. Local clubs include:

Maurice and Rachel Garnant celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary on Sunday, Sept. 4, with a family gathering at the Ox Yoke Inn in Amana. Guests included James, Sherry, Anna and Katie Garnant of Ely; Kris Garnant and Skip Willets of Cedar Rapids; Maureen Smith and Roger Burgess of Clinton, and Leo Truhlar of Cedar Rapids. Mr. Garnant and the former Rachel Truhlar were married on Sept. 6, 1949 in Des Moines.

Solon streak continues with 56-7 gridiron win

FORT MADISON– Brisk air and the whispers of fall caressed the Spartan fans making the trek to Fort Madison on Friday, Sept. 30. Although cooler temperatures indicate a change in season, Solon football continued its success unchanged on the field.
The Solon Spartans have outscored their last four opponents 168-25 following the Friday waxing of Fort Madison, 56-7, handing the Bloodhounds their sixth consecutive loss of the season.

Solon defeats Liberty freshmen, 40-6

IOWA CITY– Solon’s freshman Spartans rolled over the Liberty High “Original (O) Bolts” 40-6 Thursday, Sept. 29, at Iowa City West High.
The Spartans opened with a pass from Camden Miller to Andrew Coons for a touchdown with 6:35 remaining in the first quarter and scored their second touchdown on a run not quite two minutes later. The O-Bolts blocked the extra point kick, but Solon held a 13-0 lead. The Spartan defense stymied the Bolts and intercepted a Drake Woody pass late in the period to end a Liberty drive.

Picking pumpkins, team building

SOLON– After a Tuesday race in Williamsburg, Wednesday was ‘Run to Work Day’ for the cross country Spartans. And work was picking pumpkins.
Again this year, the high school cross country team waded into its community service project at Leo Shima’s farm, snipping stems and tossing pumpkins aboard the farm wagons that rolled slowly alongside of them. “It would take us two days to do what they do in an hour,” Shima said and smiled as the last wagon was lined up on his farm two miles west of Solon.

Solon cross country girls notch first team title, boys third

WILLIAMSBURG– Solon grabbed two top-15 finishes and the team finished third overall, in the boys’ Williamsburg Invitational Sept. 27. That included a Jorel Justus 18:05 for second place; his best finish of the season. Teammate Tanner Larkey (19:17) was 15th, with Solon’s Carl Richey right behind in 19:22. Luke Yetley was the No. 4 Spartan runner (19:35), with Logan Yakish (19:44) for the fifth and final team scoring spot among the 34 varsity runners.

Lady Spartans battle back in 3-1 volleyball loss to Dyersville Beckman

DYERSVILLE– The Solon varsity volleyball team dropped to 5-13 on the season after a 3-1 loss to Dyersville Beckman Sept. 27 at Dyersville.
The Blazers won the first two sets (25-12, 25-22) before the Lady Spartans battled back to capture the third game, 28-26. Beckman edged out Solon in the fourth, 25-22.
Solon hosts Central DeWitt Thursday, Oct. 6, for the final home match of the season. After a weekend tournament in Center Point, the Lady Spartans enter WaMaC Conference pool play Tuesday, Oct. 11, with bracket play Thursday, Oct. 13.

Basketball referees are needed for girls’ basketball grades 3-6

SOLON– Applicants need to be in high school or older, and have prior experience in either playing or refereeing basketball. Games will be held on Saturdays at the Lakeview Elementary gym (on Oct. 5, 12, 19, and Dec. 3 and 12) from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Referees are paid $10/game. SUTLIFF– Sutliff was one of the areas preparing for Cedar River flooding.
On Friday, Sept. 23, Rod Sullivan, chairman of the Johnson County Board of Supervisors and a Lisbon native, was at the site to investigate the potential impact of floodwaters on the Sutliff Bridge.
“At 24.1 feet of water, the water level will touch some of the metal at the base of the bridge,” Sullivan said. “It won’t be as high as it was in 2008, though.”

Flu vaccination clinics at Solon Schools Oct. 11, 18 and 25

SOLON– The Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) visits Lakeview Elementary Tuesday, Oct. 11; Solon Middle School Tuesday, Oct. 18; and Solon High School Tuesday, Oct. 25, all from 3:30-6 p.m., to administer flu vaccinations to the public.
The clinics offer flu shots QIV, High Dose Flu (for ages 65 years and older) and pneumonia vaccine (available upon prior request).

SOLON– The Solon Fire Department urges families in Solon to install and maintain working smoke alarms. Properly installed and maintained smoke alarms save lives every day across the country.
And, Solon Fire Department members are ready to help.
From 9-11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29, the Solon Fire Department will conduct a free “Battery Up” campaign offering in-home fire prevention to residents in need of assistance.

Solon Archery Team to host open house Monday, Oct. 17

SOLON– The Solon Archery Team is hosting an open house on Monday, Oct. 17, from 6-8 p.m. at the Solon United Methodist Church Family Life Center gym. All current team members, parents and anyone in fifth-12th grades that would like to join the team are encouraged to attend. The archery team will offer forms needed to be filled out by the parents, shirts to be tried on for correct size information and will collect dues during the open house. All information concerning the archery program will be discussed. Any questions will be answered.
