SWISHER– The sights and sounds of the season were on full display Saturday, Dec. 14, in a small, northwestern Johnson County community as “A Very Merry Christmas in Swisher” was held for an evening of holiday festivities.

Sheriffs office confirms pharmacy break-in

SOLON– What was originally thought to be a fluke accident is now being investigated as a burglary.
According to Lt. Randy Lamm of the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, an alarm was reported at Solon Towncrest Pharmacy shortly after 4 a.m. Monday, Dec. 23.
Both the responding deputy and the owner found the glass of the front door shattered, but everything appeared to be in place with no other evidence of a break-in.

Solon defeats one-loss Beckman at home

SOLON– “A win tonight would make Christmas stuffing taste better,” Assistant Coach Jim Smith said on Friday night, Dec. 20, in the heat of the fourth quarter during a varsity basketball game between the Lady Spartans and the Beckman Trailblazers.
Solon hung on, following a one-point deficit, 18-17, in the first quarter, to build a seven-point lead at the half, 30-23. A tight battle in the third quarter, during which Beckman rallied to outscore Solon, 15-11, to trail, 41-38, before the Lady Spartans rebounded to triumph, 54-47, over a previously 6-1 Trailblazer team.

Taylor, Gnida and Flynn take 1st

FORT MADISON– Powered by three individual champions, Solon’s varsity wrestlers placed fifth in the 18-team Fort Madison Invitational Dec. 20-21.
Hayden Taylor (145 pounds), Zeb Gnida (152) and Jax Flynn (170) provided 154 of the Spartans’ 374 points with first-place finishes.
Twelve Solon wrestlers earned points in the two-day tournament heading into the holiday break.
Cedar Rapids Kennedy took the team title with 487 points, with Dubuque Hempstead (421.5) and host Fort Madison (421) neck and neck for runner-up. New London edged Solon out of fourth place by seven points.

Dean’s Dream

Solon Hardware documentary screens at community center Jan. 12

SOLON– For Barry Sharp, the history of Solon Hardware was worth preserving.
“If you want to feel good about living in this community, this is a great story,” he noted.
His documentary film, “Dean’s Dream,” will be screened for the public Sunday, Jan. 12, at 2 p.m. at the Solon Community Center.
Sharp moved to Solon in 2006 as director of the Iowa City Veteran Affairs (VA) Health Care System. He visited the Solon Hardware Store to purchase garbage cans and other items needed for a new home.

Johnson County’s Unified Development Ordinance passes third vote, takes effect Jan. 15

IOWA CITY– Johnson County’s updated Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) passed its third and final consideration on a 3-2 vote Thursday, Dec. 19, during a formal meeting of the Johnson County Board of Supervisors. As with the previous two readings, Supervisors Rod Sullivan, Pat Heiden and Royce Ann Porter voted to approve while Janelle Rettig and Chairwoman Lisa Green-Douglass opposed.

Closer than appeared, Lady Spartans fall to Sabers, 55-39

SOLON– The Lady Spartans hosted the 6-0 Central DeWitt Sabers on Tuesday, Dec. 17, at Solon High School, their second game in as many days and they turned in a solid performance closing within eight points of Central DeWitt on numerous occasions before falling, 55-39.
Central DeWitt amassed a 15-0 lead when Solon took a second timeout, with a few ticks over two minutes remaining in the first quarter. The timeout discussion worked as Solon stopped the hemorrhaging and scored its first points of the game, trailing 15-2 at the end of the first period.

Wrestlers split with Central DeWitt, Maquoketa

Cardinals edge Spartans, 39-37

DeWITT– Solon’s wrestlers narrowly missed sweeping a double dual at Central DeWitt Dec. 19.
The Spartans pulled away late against the host Sabers, 54-30, but were edged by the Cardinals, 39-37, in a dual decided in the final match.
Against Maquoketa, Solon came back from a 30-15 deficit to take the lead near the end of the meet, but the slim margin was not enough to withstand losses in the last two matches of the evening.
The Spartans started with a modest 3-0 lead on a 6-2 decision by Gage Marty (220 pounds) over Maquoketa’s Lane Stender.

Solon draws to within three in third quarter

SOLON– In the third period, Solon had Central DeWitt’s lead whittled away to three points on a breakaway by sophomore Kinnick Pusteoska.
It forced a Saber timeout and had Solon Head Coach Matt Lesan pumping his fist on the sidelines.
But Central DeWitt senior Tucker Kinney was not to be denied and his game-high 27 points led the Sabers past the Spartans in the fourth quarter for a 62-38 win in Solon Dec. 17.
The loss moved the Spartans to 2-4 on the season.

Saving Santa

Helen Proffitt restores Golden Age department store Santa Santa’s Kitchen display featured at tree walk

SOLON– It was the year Helen Proffitt saved Santa.
Proffitt, of rural Solon, spent several months restoring a 5-foot 1961 Harold Gale Santa Company Santa for display at Solon’s annual tree walk Dec. 7.
The Santa figure, along with two elves, were featured in a three-walled Santa’s Kitchen in a corner of the Solon United Methodist Church Family Life Center, along with hundreds of other donated items.
Many of those, including Santa and the elves, came from the collection of Toni Russo of Solon.

New recreation director hired

Tom Harder started Dec. 16

SOLON– Solon has a new recreation director.
Tom Harder, a native of Iowa City, started the new post Dec. 16.
Harder replaces Ben Flaherty, who served in the position from September of 2018 to Nov. 7. Flaherty accepted a new job with the City of Ames.
Recreation Administrative Assistant McKenzie McIlrath served as an interim coordinator while the candidate search was underway.
According to City Administrator Cami Rasmussen, interviews were conducted in November and the position was offered and accepted by Harder.

County’s Unified Development Ordinance passes second vote

Third and final vote set for 9 a.m. Dec. 19

IOWA CITY– Johnson County’s Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) moved one vote closer to adoption on Thursday, Dec. 12, as the board of supervisors held the second of three considerations (votes) on the controversial measure during a regular meeting.
As with the first vote on Dec. 5, supervisors Rod Sullivan, Royce Ann Porter and Pat Heiden voted in the affirmative with supervisors Janelle Rettig and Lisa Green-Douglass in the negative for a 3-2 final tally.
