Boys earn state tourney berth, but fall to No. 1 seed

DES MOINES– The Spartans had their chances, but couldn’t put enough runs on the board.
Solon fell to No. 1 seed Waverly-Shell Rock, 3-1, in a Class 3A quarterfinal game at Principal Park Tuesday.
Solon entered the tournament as the No. 8 seed.
“Our goal coming in was to put pressure on them, and we did that virtually every inning except for maybe one or two,” commented head coach Keith McSweeney after the game. “We just couldn’t come up with that big hit in those early innings.”

Hearing set to consider borrowing for $727,000 fire station addition

SOLON– The Solon City Council did not support language in a ballot initiative that would dedicate 10 percent of potential Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) revenue toward payment of a bond for the county courthouse annex.
Council members did schedule a public hearing on securing Tax Increment Financing (TIF) for an addition to the fire station.
The city has a number of major infrastructure projects still on its to-do list, including the North Trunk sewer line, a water tower, and other municipal projects, and is currently carrying substantial debt to retire.

Lady Spartans overpower Clippers 15-4

Solon women unload 21 hits on CCA

FORT DODGE– Solon head coach Jim White really wanted that first run.
In the top of the first inning, the Lady Spartans came up with three clutch two-out singles to score first against Clear Creek Amana (CCA) in a 4A quarterfinal at the state softball tournament in Fort Dodge Monday.
A year ago, Solon had been ranked No. 3 and came into the state tournament with only two losses, but the unranked Washington Demons jumped out to a 3-0 lead and the Lady Spartans didn’t recover.
This time, against a familiar foe in the CCA Clippers, it was another story.
