Legion breakfast to benefit the Veteran’s Memorial Jan. 18

SOLON– Solon American Legion will serve pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, biscuits and gravy, juice, coffee and milk on Sunday, Jan. 18, from 7:30-11:30 a.m. The all-you-can-eat breakfast is $8 for adults, $4 for children ages 6 to 12 and children 5 and under eat free. Proceeds go to the upkeep, landscaping, electricity and water expenses at the Veteran’s Memorial at the Legion ball park. Solon Futbol Club can drive Jan. 17

SOLON– Solon Futbol Club (FC) will hold a “Kick the Can” fundraiser on Jan. 17 from 9 a.m. to noon. Cans and bottles may be dropped off at the Solon Heating and Air building just off Highway 1 north of Solon. Members of the Solon FC will also be going door-to-door for pickup. Mercy’s Mobile Mammography van to visit Solon Tuesday, Jan. 20

SOLON– The Mercy Women’s Center mobile mammography van will be in Solon on Tuesday, Jan. 20. The van will be located at the Mercy Family Medicine of Solon Clinic. The clinic was formerly known as Solon Family Practice, and is located at 510 W. Main St. The mobile mammography unit has been providing convenient access to breast screening services for Eastern Iowa women for over 28 years.

Prentice joins city council

Herdliska resigns to create another opening

SOLON­– Just as quickly as one vacancy was filled, another opened up for the Solon City Council.
The council welcomed new member Mark Prentice, who was appointed at the Jan. 7 regular session to fill the vacancy created when council member Brad Kunkel moved outside the city limits.
At the end of the meeting, it was announced that council member Ron Herdliska had resigned effective Jan. 1.
The city accepted applications from the community to fill Kunkel’s spot, and received four: from Prentice, Dale Snipes, Steve Lee and Kristina Bevans.

Solon stops five-game losing streak with win over Western Dubuque

SOLON– What a way to stop a five-game skid.
It took two overtimes, but the Solon Spartans defeated conference rival Western Dubuque in a Friday night shoot-out, 93-91.
The score was knotted at 91 with 90 seconds left in the second overtime, and Solon wound down the clock for a final shot.
Senior guard Emilio Villagrana found junior Haltson Durr open on the back side for an open shot and the 93-91 lead with two seconds left, enough only for a desperation heave by Western Dubuque.

Lady Spartans start new year with two losses

SOLON– It’s been cold coming out of winter break.
The Solon varsity girls basketball team picked up its first losses of the season to start the new year, at home Jan. 6 against Clear Creek Amana (CCA) and at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids Saturday against unbeaten Western Dubuque.
CCA beat Solon 55-43, while Western Dubuque (No. 2 in Class 4A) put the Lady Spartans down 42-14.
In both games, Solon had a hard time getting buckets.
In the case of the Clippers, Solon also had a hard time handling senior Hanna Stokes, who led CCA with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Solon wrestlers collect dual wins; third at Marshalltown

MARSHALLTOWN– It’s a really hectic time for Solon head wrestling coach TJ Bevans, but he couldn’t be happier.
Heading into this weekend’s Ed Hadenfeldt Invitational, his varsity wrestlers are coming off a third-place finish at a packed Allie Morrison Dual Tournament in Marshalltown and a first-ever dual win over West Delaware in Manchester.
At Marshalltown Jan. 10, the Spartans defeated Grinnell, Marshalltown and North Polk before falling to Norwalk 31-29. Johnston beat Solon 49-12 in the final round.

“Famous” SAL Kettle-Fried Chicken Dinner on Saturday, Feb. 7

SOLON– The Solon Sons of the American Legion are hosting its annual “Famous” Kettle-Fried Chicken Dinner on Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Solon American Legion. The menu includes all-you-can-eat kettle-fried chicken, cheesy potatoes, oven-baked beans, bread, dessert and soft drinks. Serving is from 5 until 7:30 p.m. with take-out available. Tickets are $9 for adults, $4 for children 6 to 12 and children under 6 eat free. Proceeds will benefit the community and Solon school projects.

AORN’S Teddy Bear Hospital informs public on role of OR nurses

SOLON-Standing at about six feet tall, the patient might have seemed just a little bit intimidating to the average kindergartener.
But really, he was just a big teddy bear.
Over 30 Solon area children, parents, and stuffed animals attended the Teddy Bear Hospital on Saturday, Nov. 8. The Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) put on the event held at Lakeview Elementary.

SOLON– There’s a lot to be done, but so far, so good.
Members of the Solon school board visited Tuesday, Dec. 16, with architects and construction management staff for an update on the new middle school and performing arts center projects.
Architects and school staff have met for a series of input sessions to fine-tune the designs, while project manager Story Construction anticipates two bid lettings; one in February and one in March.

Solon students knit and donate scarves

Students from Solon spent the last three months in stitches. Since the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary in 2012, Solon’s middle and high school students have been knitting and donating scarves to second graders at Jackson Elementary in Des Moines. This year, 71 scarves were shipped to Des Moines as a random act of kindness for those second graders who died on that fateful day. “I feel like students really enjoyed this project,” said seventh-grader Elly Schadler. “What hit me was that one scarf can make a child’s Christmas.
