Prelude to postseason: Girls sixth at North Linn

TROY MILLS– It will take a couple leaders to push the pack as Solon’s cross country season races into the home stretch. Thursday’s WaMaC conference meet is followed by the state qualifying meet one week later.
Leading into that stretch, the Spartans are coming off the North Linn meet, with 18 (girls) and 19 (boys) full teams and several incomplete (less than five runners) squads circling the crowded Troy Mills campus. The boys were 11th, with just two top-50 runners in the crowded 1A through 3A field. The girls edged Central Clinton of DeWitt for the sixth spot.

Tried and true, or fresh and new?

NL voters will be asked to choose Nov. 4

NORTH LIBERTY– The candidates for North Liberty mayor set the dichotomy between themselves early in an Oct. 8 forum held in the North Liberty City Council chambers.
Incumbent North Liberty Mayor Gerry Kuhl will face resident Amy Nielsen in the Nov. 4 election.
In his opening statement, Kuhl said that while he brings years of background in city government to the chair, his opponent has never served on a city board or commission.

Solon’s former fire chief looks back on 40 years as a firefighter

SOLON– For 40 years, Dan Smith responded to emergencies in Solon, Iowa City and the surrounding area as a firefighter. In September, he put his helmet on the rack for the final time as he retires from the Solon Fire Department.
Smith is the son of the late Vernon Smith, a man who served the community as mayor, town cop, city councilman and volunteer firefighter (for eight years).

Council, fire chief review need for Knox-Box requirement

Gwen Prentice appointed to planning and zoning

SOLON– It’s time to lock up a safety issue in Solon, according to Solon Fire Chief Bob Siddell.
At the Oct. 1 Solon City Council meeting, Siddell reported on Tri-Township Fire Department activities, which included an update on plans for Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 5 through 11.
“The Knox-Box situation– I need to get this thing straightened out,” said Siddell.
A Knox-Box, known officially as the KNOX-BOX® Rapid Entry System, is a small, wall-mounted safe that holds building keys for fire departments, Emergency Medical Services, and law enforcement to retrieve in emergency situations.

The team will be hosting a bake sale, a 50/50 raffle and a silent auction featuring a football signed by former NFL player Aaron Kampman during the match. It will also be senior night for the team. Proceeds will go to the Hall-Perrine Cancer Center in Cedar Rapids.

Commuters clogging I-380

DOT survey seeks input on alternatives

NORTH LIBERTY– Commuters on Interstate 380 have more company on the road than before, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT).
And the organization is trying to find alternatives to reduce the number of drivers on the crowded super slab.
Iowa DOT representatives presented a two-pronged assault to reduce the number of daily drivers during a public information open house Thursday, Oct. 2, at the North Liberty Community Library.

Pumpkin picking

A midseason morale boost for Solon cross country team

SOLON– Mid-season in cross country. Each week, another meet or two. Another 200 runners. Training miles pile up. Progress? Some, but you want more. Sometimes you need to stop– and smell the pumpkins.
Well, pick them anyway.
With meets nine days apart, Solon’s boys and girls cross country team detoured from the grassy course to the pumpkin patch last week. Almost 60 bodies bent, reached, cut, pulled, dragged, tossed and loaded pumpkins on to hay wagons at the Glenn Shima farm west of Solon. The results of their work day are on display… and for sale… 2-1/2 miles west of Solon on Highway 382.

Solon rolls 54-14

Spartans score on offense, defense and special teams at Central DeWitt

DeWITT– Solon countered Central DeWitt’s triple-option with its own version- scoring on offense, defense and special teams.
The Spartans delivered a convincing 54-14 loss to the Sabers on the road Friday night in DeWitt, dropping Central DeWitt to 3-3 and moving the sixth ranked (3A) Spartans to 5-1.
Brandon Kramer rushed for three touchdowns, Brandan Childs ran for two, Spencer Lawson returned an interception 28 yards for a score and Kramer provided a 57-yard punt return for Solon. Blayze Griffis and Bo Black also hooked up for a 53-yard strike for the Spartans’ final score.

Spartan volleyball host No. 2 (4A) West Delaware

WaMaC title on the line Thursday

SOLON– It’s No. 1 in Class 3A against No. 2 in Class 4A Thursday, Oct. 9, as Solon hosts West Delaware in a match pitting the two top teams in the WaMaC East against each other.
Currently, West Delaware is sporting a 28-0 record going into action Tuesday against Dyersville Beckman, with only a single set lost for the season.
The Lady Spartans, 18-4 heading into a home match against Central DeWitt Tuesday, defeated Western Dubuque last week and made it to the semifinals at a Waverly tournament over the weekend, falling to No. 7 (2A) Grundy Center.

Girls take second at Williamsburg

SOLON– The mid-week pumpkin patch detour did not disrupt the schedule. There are still meets to run, as conference (Oct. 16) and districts (Oct. 23) loom ahead. Solon’s girls racked up a runner-up finish in the four-school Williamsburg invitational Sept. 29. The boys were fourth there in a five-team field.

Water, sewer projects move forward to design

SOLON– The city of Solon is considering an interest-free loan option from the state to help jump-start two substantial water and sewer projects.
City Administrator Cami Rasmussen initiated a discussion with the city council regarding the north trunk sewer line and water storage systems for the city at its Sept. 17 meeting.
No action was taken, but Mayor Steve Stange encouraged councilors to clarify their views on moving forward with the projects. Rasmussen indicated she received sufficient direction to move the projects forward.
