Solon sophomore finishes 35th at Ft. Dodge

FORT DODGE– Turning on the jets with less than a half-mile to go, Solon sophomore Gabe Hinman threaded his way through the pack. He picked up some valuable real estate at the Kennedy Park Golf (and cross country) course, Saturday, finishing 35th at the Class 3A state cross country meet.
“Gabe had a great meet,” applauded head coach Emy Williams. “He ran most of the race in 43rd place. In the last 400 meters he caught a lot of runners and ended up 35th. His experience from the year before (when he finished 46th as a freshman) helped, too.

“Abby was definitely the difference in the game,” said Solon Head Coach Sarah Ferin. “She went over us, and converted every free ball– credit to her player of the year title for sure.”
Brunssen powered her team with 37 kills.
Solon countered with defense, recording 15 blocks for the game.

More blood!

SOLON– It isn’t often you hear teenagers asking for head wounds.
But such calls were frequent at the Solon Public Library Oct. 10 as the organizer of the Iowa City Zombie March visited for a workshop on appearing undead.
Joshua Christain taught about a dozen Solon teenagers how to make their face paler and to darken their cheekbones and under their eyes as part of the library’s weekly Creative, Amazing Teens (C.A.T.S.) program for fifth through 12th graders.

House Divided Brewery

Home brewer's dream come true

ELY– Cal Corrin has been brewing his own beer since the early 1990s.
There weren’t any craft beers around back then, but he found himself drawn to the imports.
“You’d find a stout maybe once in a while or a Guinness or some other import that’s different than domestic beer,” he explained.
He was residing in Quincy, Ill., at the time, which had a home brew supply store, so he started making his own.
“Even when I started, it was always in the back of my mind, wouldn’t it be great to do a brewery,” he said. “Always in my thoughts.”
