Lady Spartans third at divisional golf meet May 1 in Anamosa

ANAMOSA– The Solon Lady Spartans traveled to Anamosa on Monday, May 1, for the WaMAC East Divisional Meet and finished third in the Seven-team field.
Mother nature was not going to cooperate producing a lot of rain, wind and overall just nasty weather. Host school Anamosa won the meet and Central DeWitt came in second.
Grace McCarty shot a 49 to lead the Lady Spartans. Dani Carter shot a 51, Julia DeValk and Leah Woessner shot a 54 and 57 respectively. The Lady Spartans returned to action on Friday, May 5, at the Tigerette Invite in Tipton.

Solon defeats Central DeWitt on penalty shot, 1-0

SOLON– Sophomore Luke Yetley had a point-blank shot at the goal on a penalty kick with just over 12 minutes remaining in the first half and he made it count.
Yetley’s goal provided Solon’s varsity boys’ soccer team with a 1-0 win over Central DeWitt May 4 in Solon. The win moved the Spartans to 12-5 on the season. Junior keeper Eric Weetman had seven saves in the shutout.
It was a bounce back game for Solon, which had been defeated on the road May 2 at Maquoketa, 2-1. Senior Ben Carr scored Solon’s lone goal on an assist from sophopmore Jorel Justus.

Spartans 11th at WaMaC Conference Super Meet

EPWORTH– “(The) teams in the WaMaC are some of the best in the state and will make a statement at the state meet,” Coach Mark Sovers said when asked for his perspective of the Solon Spartans’ track and field team’s 11th-place finish at the WaMaC Conference Coed Super Meet held at Western Dubuque High School, in Epworth, on Thursday, May 4.

Spartans capture fourth at Ruth Ahrens Invitational track meet

 MARENGO– The Solon boys varsity track team improved their showing behind solid scoring performances from underclassmen. Tuesday, April 11, the gear was loaded on the bus and the team trekked to Iowa Valley High School in Marengo for the Ruth Ahrens Invitational, a trek that would post one of the best team performances to date.

Durr’s five goals power Lady Spartans past Maquoketa, 7-2

SOLON– Five goals from senior Josie Durr sealed Maquoketa’s fate in Solon May 2 during a girls’ varsity soccer match.
The Lady Spartans took a 7-2 victory over the Cardinals in a WaMaC Conference East Division matchup.
All of Durr’s goals came in the first half.
Junior Megan Tucker gave Solon a 6-1 lead after finding the back of the net with nine seconds remaining in the first period. Sophomore Taylor Ryan added a goal in the second period. Tucker was credited with an assist, while keeper Brianna Smith recorded five saves.

Lady Spartans best Regina on home golf course

SOLON– The Solon Lady Spartans hosted the Regina Lady Regals on Monday night, April 24, at Lake MacBride Golf Course. The course was playing really tough with slick greens and tough pin placements, but the girls didn’t let the course get the best of them. All four of Solon’s seniors would contribute to the team score with Dani Carter’s 50 leading the team. She was followed by Grace McCarty (51), Julia DeValk (57), and Katie Feldkamp’s 60 for a team total of 218. Regina was led by Grace Sharpless’ 53 and scored a 231 as a team.

The state of Swisher

Mayor Chris Taylor helps chart the future of small-town Iowa

SWISHER– Running for city office, and most recently for chair of the Johnson County Democrats, both sort of came about by accident, said Swisher Mayor Chris Taylor.
Happy accidents, he noted, that began with his bid for a Swisher City Council seat in January 2014.
“I remember sitting at my kitchen table and thinking, ‘Well this isn’t something I’ve done before,’” he shared. “I have no background in politics, but I thought it’d be a good way to get to know my community better, help the community ask some bigger questions about what it wanted to be, where it wanted to go.”

Solon KCs hosting spaghetti supper Saturday, May 6

SOLON– Solon’s Knights of Columbus (KC) host its annual spaghetti supper Saturday, May 6, from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church Parish Hall.
The KCs will be serving a spaghetti dinner with garlic bread and salad in exchange for a free will donation. Doug Thompson’s famous spaghetti sauce will be available for carry-out sale.

Be A Hunger Hero for Mary’s Meals May 13 at SRNA

SOLON– On Saturday, May 13, from 9 a.m. to noon, Be A Hunger Hero at Solon Recreation and Nature Area.
This event is for the entire family to enjoy a morning full of hero themed activities. A super-hero training course provided and ran by Iowa Gym-Nest, cape decorating, Solon firefighters, bounce houses, and face painting are all provided for participating children.
One mile and 5K fun runs will start at 9:30 a.m. The runs take place on the paved trail around the recreation and nature area and partially on the graveled Lake MacBride Nature Trail.

Sheriff’s office seeking information on incident at Solon Casey’s Apr. 26

SOLON– The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office is seeking information relating to an incident at Casey’s General Store at 203 S. Market St. in Solon.
On Wednesday, April 26, at approximately 3:45 p.m., an unknown subject had a conversation with some children outside of the store. The subject is described as an older white male with white hair wearing sunglasses and a black hat with flames on it. The subject was driving a newer silver four-door car and left southbound on Hwy. 1 after the interaction.

Solon Women’s Club May Day Breakfast Saturday, May 6

SOLON– Invite friends and family to attend the May Day Breakfast at the Solon United Methodist Church on Saturday, May 6, from 7-11 a.m.
The all-you-can-eat breakfast consists of egg and meat casseroles, homemade kolaches and/or rolls, fruit, orange juice, coffee and milk. The cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children 5-12. Younger children are free.
Tickets will be available at the door or from the GFWC/Iowa Solon Women’s Club members.

County assessment center unveiled

SOLON– A county initiative to build a behavioral assessment center received positive responses from members of the Solon City Council.
“I can guarantee you the money that is saved by having these types of services for people that are mentally ill, versus throwing them into a jail or a prison system, is substantial,” council member Shawn Mercer said after a presentation during an April 19 meeting.
