SOLON– Each year the American Legion Auxiliary distributes poppies to commemorate the sacrifice of our servicemen and women who gave their lives in our country’s wars. The tradition of having the memorial flower honor the war dead began after World War I when returning soldiers brought memories of the battlefield poppies which were immortalized in Canadian John McCrae’s poem “In Flander’s Fields” whose opening lines are familiar to millions around the world:
“In Flander’s Fields the poppies blow,
Between the crosses row on row…”

VAN HORNE– With 16 teams on the track, the road got tougher for Solon’s girls track team at the WaMaC Super Meet May 8. The top three schools were separated by just eight points, and now set their sights on regional qualifying, and eventually, the state track meet May 22-24 in Des Moines.
Earlier in the week, the Spartans earned another team title, at the Monticello Invitational. With the conference competition, though, the stakes get higher.

Spartans fall to No. 8 Central DeWitt

Solon boys shut out Maquoketa, Williamsburg

SOLON– The Spartans ran into trouble against No. 8 Central DeWitt last week on the road.
Although Solon was in control for a good portion of the game, a late penalty in the box gave Central DeWitt’s Keegan Lass a free shot which he converted to break a 1-1 tie.
“We played well being short handed due to the conference track meet and against a good and ranked opponent,” said head coach Jeremy McMurrin of the 2-1 loss. “We worked hard to get the lead and deserved to get the win. Unfortunately we were unable to do that due to things we didn’t have any control over after we took the lead.”

Former mayor to continue role as city administrator

City hires Rasmussen for one-year deal

By Doug Lindner
Solon Economist

SOLON– The City of Solon didn’t have to look very far for a new city administrator.
Former mayor Cami Rasmussen has entered into an employment agreement with the city to serve as city administrator for a term of one year.
According to acting mayor Steve Stange, the move assures continuity for city operations and stability for the city budget. At the end of the one-year agreement, the position will be advertised and a long term candidate will be sought, Stange said.
For now, however, the move buys the city some time.
