Swisher Junior Auxiliary Halloween Party and Soup Supper Oct. 29

Listening post becomes confinement debate

IOWA CITY– A listening post, seeking public input on Johnson County’s first-ever comprehensive plan, became more of an open debate regarding Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO) on Monday, Oct. 9, at the Health and Human Services Building, in Iowa City.
The meeting was scheduled as a work session for the board of supervisors and planning and zoning commission, and 26 individuals took up the microphone to state their position.

NLFD covers fire, bike and traffic safety at Garner Elementary

NORTH LIBERTY– It’s October, and that means it’s time for National Fire Prevention Week.
On the morning of Friday, Oct. 13, Captain Chris Kochanny and Lieutenant Mike Johnson of the North Liberty Fire Department (NLFD) took turns presenting information to the students of Garner Elementary, assisted by a slideshow, videos and various props.

Annual F.A.M.E Fruit, Meat and Cheese fundraiser Oct. 12 to Nov. 1

OXFORD– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Fine Arts and Music Enhancers (F.A.M.E.) is the fine arts booster club which provides extra funding for the art, band, music, drama and speech programs at all the schools in the Clear Creek Amana Community School District. The annual Fruit, Meat and Cheese event is the main fundraiser. For over 20 years, students and parents involved in the CCA fine arts programs raise money by selling fruit, meat, cheeses and nuts to family and friends.

Tunnel, mazes, carnival games and fun for just $2 per child. Children must be accompanied by adults. Come in costume and have a frightful time. Activities, snacks, drinks and candy supplied by NL Optimist Club & Recreation Staff. Photos will be taken free of charge by Sandi Spurrell Photography and posted to her website. Pay at the door, no preregistration required.

Clear Creek Amana Student Assistance Team/Interact club annual Senior Supper Nov. 4

TIFFIN– On Saturday, Nov. 4, the Clear Creek Amana Student Assistance Team/Interact club will host its annual Senior Supper at the high school in Tiffin. The club members look forward to an evening with members of the district 55-years-young or older. A main course of turkey, ham and mashed potatoes is provided and the students will provide the rest of the meal as pot luck. Serving starts at 6 p.m. Patrons may look forward to an evening of not quite fine dining but good conversation, good food and meeting new and returning friends.

Swisher Auxiliary to host Annual Homemade Turkey Supper and Turkey Bingo Nov. 4

SWISHER– Swisher Auxiliary’s Annual Homemade Turkey Supper and Turkey Bingo will hosted Saturday, Nov 4, from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at the Swisher American Legion, located at 68 3rd St. SE, in Swisher.
Cost of the event is adults $10, children 6-12 years old $5 with under 5 admitted free.
The Junior Auxiliary will also host a turkey bingo upstairs. Cost is $1 to play bingo for the opportunity to win a frozen turkey. Bingo begins at 4:30 p.m. and lasts until the turkeys are gone. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Proposal for Beerburger relative tabled over alley

SOLON– A new restaurant is trying to squeeze into the Main Street landscape.
But prospective neighbors were concerned to find out about it through little league; and likewise disconcerted to find out the new eatery wanted exclusive use of a shared alley for outdoor dining.
Relations between tentative neighbors got off left foot first during a wild and wooly Oct. 4 Solon City Council meeting.

Our Lord’s Fall Festival Oct. 14

SOLON– Our Lord’s Church will hold its annual Bake Sale and Soup Luncheon Saturday, Oct. 14, from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the church, located at 131 N. Market St. in Solon.
The soup luncheon features homemade chili, chicken noodle, and chicken tortilla soup, along with hot dogs and drinks. All soups will be hot and ready at 10:30 a.m. The bake sale will include kolaches and much more. Dee Meister’s cards will also be on sale.

Scouting for Food Oct. 14

SOLON– Scouting For Food will take place in Solon on Oct. 14.  Scouts will distribute donation bags Oct. 7-11 and collect filled bags on Saturday, Oct. 14, from 9 a.m. to noon. Donations collected in Solon will be delivered directly to the Solon Food Pantry.
A donation drop box will also be placed at Solon City Hall from Oct. 3-14 for anyone not receiving a bag or living in city limits.

Archery Team open house Oct. 19

SOLON– The Solon Archery Team hosts an open house on Thursday, Oct. 19, with registration at 6:30 p.m., and a parent meeting at 7 p.m. at the Solon United Methodist Church Family Life Center gym. All current team members, parents, and anyone in fifth-12th grades interested in joining the team are encouraged to attend. At this time, required forms will needed to be completed by parents, shirt sizing information completed, and collection of dues. All information concerning the archery program will be discussed. Questions regarding the program will also be answered.

Chicken Noodle Soup and Kolach Supper Saturday, Oct. 21

ELY– The First Presbyterian Church, near Ely, hosts its 68th Annual Chicken Soup and Kolach Supper on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 4-7 p.m.
The cost for adults is $10 and kids 3-12 pay just $5 for the menu of piping hot chicken noodle soup with crackers, fresh bread, relishes and a drink, plus fresh-baked kolaches.
Aside from enjoying kolaches with the meal, they can be purchased by the dozen at the event’s country store where attendees can also buy other baked goods and homemade gift items.
The Riverbottom Ramblers and the Iowa Accordion Club will provide musical entertainment.
