Free meal for veterans to be held Nov. 11

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty American Legion Ladies Auxiliary will again be offering a complimentary dinner to any veteran and one guest on Monday, Nov. 11, at the South Slope Telecommunications Center on Mehaffey Bridge Rd. in North Liberty beginning at 6 p.m. Register early, as a large crowd is anticipated to hear guest speaker Mike Chapman, editor of the Iowa History Journal.

Swisher Legion to host Petersen benefit Nov. 9

SWISHER– The Swisher American Legion will host a benefit for Shawnee Petersen on Saturday, Nov. 9, beginning at 2 p.m. Shawnee Petersen, single mother of three, was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in February. All donations collected go directly to Shawnee as a means of helping her to care for her children and to assist with the massive medical expenses she has incurred.
A full meal will be furnished by donations from the community, bake sale, silent auction, 50/50 raffle, face painting and other activities for children, live music all day, and much more.

Our Lord’s Church Fall Festival Oct. 19

SOLON– Our Lord’s Church will hold its ninth annual Fall Festival Saturday, Oct. 19, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the church, located at 131 N. Market St., Solon.
A soup luncheon will start at 10:30 a.m. serving homemade chili, chicken noodle, and chicken tortilla soup, along with hot dogs and chili dogs. The bake sale will include Kolaches, pies, cakes, cookies, bars, some candy, fresh farm eggs, bread from the Sykora Bakery and other member specialties. The church will again be selling Dutch Letters, a pastry from Pella, and fresh cheese curds from the Kalona Cheese Factory.

St. Mary to host Solon blood drive Thursday, Oct. 24

SOLON– A Solon community blood drive will be held from 3 until 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 1749 Racine Ave. N.E., inside Fellowship Hall.

Registration open for girls’ basketball program

Registration is now open for girls basketball (3rd-6th grade) program. Each player will learn the fundamentals of basketball, proper sportsmanship, teamwork and most importantly have fun. Games will be played on Saturday mornings, beginning the second Saturday in November. The season will run the beginning of November to mid-December. Pumpkin carving/painting event to be held Oct. 27 at Randall Park

All children age 12 and younger are invited to come paint or carve a pumpkin from 1:30-3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, at the Randall Park shelter. Solon Parks and Recreation will supply the pumpkins for the kids. Each child will get to pick out his or her own pumpkin and must be accompanied by an adult. Paint pens and markers will be provided, however each child/parent is required to bring their own carving materials. The fee is $5 per child.
