Solon Middle School Veterans Day program Tuesday, Nov. 11

SOLON– Solon Middle School’s (SMS) annual Veteran’s Day program will be held at the SMS auditorium on Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 1 p.m. All veterans, families and friends, and community members are invited.
Lieutenant Colonel Glen Winekauf is the guest speaker at the event. The American Legion will be in attendance and the eighth grade band will perform. Handmade cards will be made for veterans in attendance by the fifth and sixth graders. Refreshments will be served following the event, provided by the Solon Middle School PTO. Please join the community in honoring our veterans.

Flood repair, rock work on Lake Macbride

JOHNSON COUNTY– Repair work, getting underway over the next few days, will re-armor the Lake Macbride shoreline and jetties damaged in 2013 flooding.
Eight inches of April rain last year sent the lake’s water level climbing by four feet. Heavy rock, set in place to stabilize the shoreline and reduce soil runoff, was lost. Chris Jones Trucking of West Branch will move in a barge this week and begin work early next week. The barge will float large rock toward shoreline areas and islands that cannot be reached from shore.

Board approves design work for troublesome trail

CCA school board approves contract, hears project updates

OXFORD– It’s been a long, twisting path, but the end may finally be just ahead.
The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school board approved a $52,000 contract with Shive-Hattery for the design of a sidewalk-trail along the north side of the district’s property in Tiffin. The move came during the board’s regular monthly meeting Wednesday, Oct. 15, in Oxford.
The vote puts the project, mandated by the city of Tiffin’s code of ordinances and a recurring source of friction between the two entities, one step closer to fruition.

NORTH LIBERTY– The spotlight always glares on candidates and their campaign ethics when it comes to high-profile political races.
Similarly, some citizens are calling for light to be shed on both sides of the race for North Liberty’s mayoral seat.
On Tuesday, Nov. 4, voters will choose between incumbent Gerry Kuhl and newcomer candidate Amy Nielsen to complete the unexpired term of the late Mayor Tom Salm, who passed away in May.

Jail: finally light at the end of a long, dark tunnel

County commits to securing bids for repair

IOWA CITY– Johnson County Supervisor Rod Sullivan wants people to fully understand the situation with the county jail, and its estimated $1 million repair and renovation project.
“We’re not just fixing it up,” he said. “Our hand has been forced.”
Sullivan and his fellow supervisors unanimously approved the plans, specifications, and bid requests for badly-needed work at the facility, which was built in the 1980s. The resolution passed during the formal meeting Thursday, Oct. 2.

NL Legion Auxiliary to host free Vets Day dinner Nov. 11

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty American Legion Auxiliary will host a Veterans Day dinner on Tuesday, Nov. 11, beginning at 6 p.m. at South Slope’s community room, 980 N. Front St., North Liberty.
The evening will include a home-cooked meal, videos, music by Heritage Christian School, military ceremonies and a guest speaker, Roy Romans from the Iowa City Veterans Administration Medcial Facility. Colors will be advanced by the Solon American Legion Color Guard, and a bugler from Boy Scout Tropp 216 will accompany the ceremony.
Door prizes will be presented throughout the evening.

Seniors invited to CCA dinner Nov. 8

TIFFIN– On Saturday, Nov. 8, beginning at 6 p.m., the Clear Creek Amana Student Assistance Team will hold its annual Senior Supper. Anyone over the age of 55 is invited to attend, and spend a few hours with 20 or 30 of the best kids you will ever meet. The meal includes ham, turkey and covered dishes. Bring your appetite and share your experiences with our students. We have been know to play some euchre and hearts as well. Local Option Sales Tax a 10-year commitment

JOHNSON COUNTY– Next Tuesday, Nov. 4, Johnson County voters will determine the fate of a proposed Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) in their communities.
If approved by a majority vote, taxpayers within each approving jurisdiction will pay one cent more on qualified purchases beginning July 1, 2015, taking sales tax from 6 cents to 7 cents on the dollar. The tax will be limited to 10 years if it passes. Passage requires a majority of votes, or 50 percent plus one.

Ballot contains $33.4 bond issue for courthouse annex

IOWA CITY– On Nov. 4, voters will once again decide the fate of Johnson County’s aging courthouse.
On the general election ballot for Johnson County voters is a proposed $33.4 million bond referendum to build a courthouse annex to improve the function of the facility.

Halloween fair and soup super Oct. 26

SWISHER– The Swisher American Legions Junior Auxiliary will be hosting a Halloween fair and soup supper on Sunday, Oct. 26 from 5 until 7 p.m. at the legion. Please bring a non-perishable canned good to help support the homeless veterans food pantry. Activities will include kids crafts, hayrack ride, s’mores and hot chocolate. Wear your costume and bring your decorated pumpkin for the costume and decorated pumpkin contests. All you can eat soup will be located downstairs for $5. Trunk-or-treat will follow the event in the legion parking lot.

Turkey supper Nov. 1 at Swisher Legion

SWISHER– The Swisher Auxiliary Annual Homemade Turkey Supper will be held on Saturday, Nov. 1, from 4:30 until 7:30 p.m. at the Swisher American Legion. 68 3rd St. SE. Adults $9, kids six to 12 $5, and kids under 5 eat free.
Swisher Junior Auxilary will be having Turkey Bingo upstairs from 4:30 p.m. until the turkeys are gone. The public is welcome.
