North Liberty to pick its first full-time fire chief

NORTH LIBERTY– In 2016, the City of North Liberty commissioned a study of the North Liberty Fire Department (NLFD) and its operations after a goal-setting session by the city council looked at the possibility of sharing services or working more closely with surrounding fire departments in an effort to improve efficiency. Retired West Des Moines Fire Chief Donald Cox, a consultant in emergency services, was hired to conduct the study. He presented his findings to the council at its March 14 meeting. Top among several recommendations was the hiring of a full-time fire chief.

Stargaze at Palisades-Dows Aug. 11

ELY– Join the Cedar Amateurs Astronomers for a night of stargazing at the Palisades-Dows Observatory in Palisades-Kepler State Park on Friday, Aug. 11, from 7-10:30 p.m.
Participants will meet at the North Liberty Recreation Center and be transported to and from the observatory in city vans. (Participants who wish to stay past 10:15 p.m. can drive their own vehicles.)
The night includes a walking tour of the observatory, 30-minute lecture on sky orientation with Stellarium and viewing the night sky from numerous on-site telescopes Register for $3 per person by Aug. 8.

Canning at South Slope Aug. 16

NORTH LIBERTY– Learn to preserve produce at a free canning class Wednesday, Aug. 16, from 6-8 p.m. with the North Liberty Community Pantry’s Growing Together Garden. Community members are invited to learn the basics of canning pickles, tomato sauce and fruit preserves.
Kirkwood instructor Chef Jeffery Sills will lead the class, demonstrating skills and safety instructions while participants make the recipes.

Council divided on hiring of Woodruff Construction

TIFFIN– A recently installed LED sign greeting visitors to the City of Tiffin should be flanked by another addition to city hall by year’s end.
At a meeting Tuesday, Aug. 1, the Tiffin City Council agreed to hire Woodruff Construction LLC, a Tiffin general contractor that built the current structure, to take on the expansion project for $139,400.
“We appreciate the opportunity to continue our support of the City of Tiffin and its incredible growth,” Nick Ford, Woodruff’s east region president, wrote to City Administrator Doug Boldt in a memo July 27.

Tiffin man jailed for sexual abuse

TIFFIN– A Tiffin man has been accused of repeated accounts of sexual abuse toward a young girl over a five-year period.
According to complaints filed by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, an officer spoke with 50-year-old Clyde W. Hinkle after Johnson County received a request from the Department of Human Services to investigate the case.
Hinkle admitted to committing multiple sex acts on the child, and the complaints state Hinkle acknowledged his actions were wrong. A medical examination found evidence of injuries consistent with sexual abuse, the officer said.

Blue-green algae identified in Beaver Kreek

NORTH LIBERTY– The City of North Liberty has recently become aware of blue-green algae in Beaver Kreek. Please note that this does not affect drinking water.
To avoid the danger of microcystins, people and pets should avoid contact with water that is discolored, has scum on the surface, and omits an odor. If contact does occur, wash with soap and water or rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove algae. This is especially important for dogs and other pets because they may lick the algae off their fur to clean themselves.

Road repainting will likely require road closures

NORTH LIBERTY– Weather permitting, city crews will be repainting street markings through Tuesday, Aug. 22.
During this work, some lanes may be closed for a short time to allow the paint to dry. Locations will vary by day. Drivers are asked to use caution around the work site, allow extra travel time, and find alternative routes when possible.

Board of Supervisors seeks applicants for library board of trustees

NORTH LIBERTY– The Johnson County Board of Supervisors is accepting applications for one vacancy on the North Liberty Community Library Board of Trustees for a person residing in unincorporated Johnson County to serve an unexpired term beginning immediately and ending June 30, 2020.

Swan Lake Road Bridge closed until further notice

IOWA CITY– Swan Lake Road Bridge F-3-1 will be closed until further notice due to accelerating structural deterioration. The bridge is located between James Avenue and Interstate 380 in Sections 3 and 34, Townships 79 and 80N, Range 07 West. Project plans are in development for inclusion in the Iowa Department of Transportation December 2017 letting. The bridge is scheduled to be replaced in 2018 as part of the County’s Adopted Five-Year Road Construction Program.

Solon Dance Team to host can and bottle drive Saturday, Aug. 5

Advocates to tour Villages of Van Buren County Thursday, Aug. 17

SOLON– The Solon Senior Advocates have scheduled a trip Thursday, Aug. 17, to tour the Villages of Van Buren County. The trip leaves from the Solon Recreation and Nature Area at 7 a.m., stops for the step-on guide to arrive at Morris Park. The tour begins with a view of an 1800 barn and a feast on homemade cinnamon rolls. Next a visit to Millard’s turtle farm, then on to Bentonsport Indian Artifact Museum and the National Historic District.

Family Day at the Iowa Raptor Project Saturday, Aug. 5

SOLON– Join the Iowa Raptor Project for its monthly Family Day on Saturday, Aug. 5, form 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
August’s featured raptor is the Harris’s hawk. Learn about the bird and enjoy some arts and crafts and snacks. This event is free and open to the public.
