Free child health and safety fair to be held Sept. 20

NORTH LIBERTY– The public is invited to First United Methodist Church of North Liberty to enjoy the annual free child health and safety fair Saturday, Sept. 20. First United Methodist Church is located at 85 N. Jones Blvd., about a block south of the corner of Penn Street and North Jones Boulevard.

Colony Pumpkin Patch holds festival, fundraiser Oct. 4

NORTH LIBERTY– The Colony Pumpkin Patch will host its Annual Fall Festival on Saturday, Oct. 4, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., at the Colony Farm, 2780 Front St. NE, North Liberty. The Fall Festival means fun activities to give people a place to reconnect with the rich farmland Iowa provides. Entertainment includes an amazing 5-acre corn maze, hayrack rides, pick-your-own pumpkin patch, pumpkin painting, games, bounce house, barrel train, giveaways and the new Li’l Pumpkins Playground with fun things for kids to do. Food will be available from The Box Lunch and Bluebird Cafe.

Pantry to show documentary ‘Paycheck to Paycheck’ Sept. 30

NORTH LIBERTY– The community is invited to a free screening of the documentary “Paycheck to Paycheck” on Tuesday, Sept. 30, beginning at 6 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church hosted by the North Liberty Community Pantry. Following the screening there will be a panel discussion including local families living pay check to pay check. Light refreshments will be provided. Childcare is available.

CCA denies Washington 20-17

TIFFIN– Clear Creek Amana (CCA) coach Matt Hughes summed up his team’s 20-17 win over the Washington Demons in one word. “Unbelievable!”
“I’m so proud of these kids,” Hughes said. “I’ve never seen a group of kids that took what we did in the off-season, and the hard work that they put in, and applied it to the football field for four quarters. They had a lot of things that went against them tonight, had some adversity, but they came up and they never quit. They kept their heads up and they had confidence they could do it.”

Solon library display honors railroads and railroaders

SOLON– In May of 1869 the Burlington, Cedar Rapids & Minneapolis Railway Company began construction of a railroad in Burlington. By 1871 the line had extended to Cedar Rapids via West Branch, Elmira, Oasis, Solon and Ely. In 1875 the railroad went into receivership and was sold to the Burlington, Cedar Rapids & Northern in 1876 before being purchased by the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific in 1885.
100 years later, in 1985, the Rock Island Railroad, better known as “The Rock,” was gone, it’s line through Solon completely abandoned and later pulled up.

Solon schools, staff take the challenge for ALS Association

SOLON– It was two buckets of fun for the students and staff at Lakeview Elementary Aug. 28.
Both Solon Schools Superintendent Sam Miller and Lakeview Principal Jodi Rickels undertook the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge as the culmination of a weeklong fundraiser to help fight Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease,
Lakeview students had raised the most money among the district’s three attendance centers, and their prize was to host Miller’s ice water bath.
The goal had been to raise $1,000 district wide.
The total was closer to $4,000.

International humanitarian to visit Sept. 18

Come meet the humanitarian that made it happen. Founder of Mary’s Meals, Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow will visit Solon on Thursday, Sept. 18, from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the middle school auditorium and share his vision for a simple solution to world hunger.

VNA flu clinic at Solon Senior Dining Sept. 17

SOLON– Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) will hold a clinic at Solon Senior Dining on Wednesday, Sept. 17, from 9 until 11 a.m. in the dining hall. The clinic will offer flu shots QIV for $32, flu mist QIV for $35, high dose flu (for ages 65+ years) for $45, and pneumonia vaccine for $90.
If a cash/check payment is received at the time of the clinic, a $3 discount will be applied.

Legion Auxiliary to host spaghetti supper fundraiser Sept. 24

all-you-can-eat spaghetti supper on Wednesday, Sept. 24, serving from 4:30 until 7 p.m., at the Legion hall.
The cost is $7 for adults, $4 for children, and children under 5 eat free.
The all-you-can-eat meal includes spaghetti, homemade sauce, garlic bread, green tossed salad, assorted dressings, homemade desserts, milk and lemonade.
Proceeds are for merit awards for Solon 2015 graduating seniors.

St. Mary selling raffle tickets for UI/Northwestern football suite

SOLON– St. Mary Catholic Church of Solon will be selling raffle tickets in advance of the Harvest Festival on Sept. 28.
The grand prize is a Kinnick Stadium suite for the Iowa-Northwestern football game on Nov. 1. The package includes 18 tickets, three parking passes, food and drink. Second prize will be $500 cash and third prize will be $250 cash. Drawing for the prizes will be held during St. Mary’s annual Harvest Festival on Sept. 28. Tickets will be sold for $5 per ticket or five for $20. Winners do not need to be present to win.

Archery Club open house Sept. 22

SOLON– The Solon Archery Club would like to invite the public to an open house to be held Monday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m. at the Solon United Methodist Church Family Life Center, located at 133 N.
