Lord’s Acre Sale

Saturday in Shueyville Lunch, auction, sales and activities for a good cause

SHUEYVILLE– Kitchens and craft rooms are humming with activity across the Shueyville United Methodist Church community, as members and friends of the church’s congregation prepare for the church’s 70th Annual Lord’s Acre Sale.
The sale is to be held on Saturday, Sept. 16, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the church, which is located at 1195 Steeple Ln. NE in Swisher.
The sale will feature a market, a chicken noodle soup lunch, a live auction, kids’ activities and fellowship, said Brenda Swanson, who has coordinated the past four sales.

North Liberty one of the 20 safest cities in Iowa

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah– North Liberty is one of the safest communities in Iowa, according to a report issued by a national home security company.
In its 4th annual Safest Cities in Iowa report, SafeWise ranked North Liberty as the 11th safest city in Iowa with a population of more than 3,000 people.
Eldridge ranked first, followed by Hampton and Waukon.
North Liberty improved its ranking from 21st the previous year.

Council limits fireworks: July 1 through 4

Proposed ordinance would eliminate New Year’s displays

SOLON– The window for shooting off fireworks displays in the City of Solon is going to close a bit.
At a Wednesday, Aug. 16, meeting, members of the Solon City Council informally approved language for an ordinance that would limit private fireworks to July 1 through July 4.
“The people that hate it are going to have to tolerate it for a week, not a month,” Mayor Steve Stange commented.
City Attorney Kevin Olson was directed to prepare an ordinance for future approval by council members.

Old Gold finds help next door

D.R. Miller steps into new role as diner’s site manager

SOLON– D.R. Miller is proving you’re never too old to start a new career.
Miller was recently named the new manager for the Old Gold Diner in Solon, taking over for Duane McAtee, who retired at the end of July.
“One of the biggest challenges for me has been that I’ve been used to writing everything down in ink in my professional life,” Miller said. “This job requires you to write things down a lot more in pencil, to be willing to be flexible to whatever changes the day brings.”

Four candidates for three board seats

SOLON– Two incumbents and two challengers will face off for three seats on the Solon school board Tuesday, Sept. 12.
Incumbents Tim Brown and Rick Jedlicka are seeking re-election, while former school board member Dan Coons and newcomer Nicole Pizzini are also on the ballot for the three at-large, four-year terms.
Most district residents will cast ballots at Solon City Hall. Residents of Jefferson Township-East will vote at the Shueyville Community Center. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Annual fall facilities usage meeting Wednesday, Sept. 13, at SMS

SOLON– On Wednesday, Sept. 13, the annual fall facilities usage meeting will be hosted for all youth league teams for the months of October through December. The meeting is open to the public at 6 p.m. in the middle school commons. Solon Sts. Peter and Paul Fall Fun Auction Sunday, Sept. 17

SOLON– The Sts. Peter and Paul Historical Foundation and Chapel will host its annual Fall Fun Auction Sunday, Sept. 17, beginning at 11 a.m. at the church hall and chapel, 1165 Taft Ave. NE.
A luncheon, kolache sale and silent auction begin at 11 a.m., with a live auction starting at 1 p.m. Raffle drawings will be held after the live auction, including a quilt raffle.

Solon Athletic Booster Club Golf Outing Sept. 30 (time change!)

SOLON– The annual Solon Athletic Booster Club Golf Outing is Saturday, Sept. 30, at the Lake MacBride Golf Course. The event is a three-person best shot contest. The entry fee is $60 per golfer and includes greens fee, lunch, a door prize and a drink ticket. This year the outing is limited to one session at 8:30 a.m. (PLEASE NOTE change in time). Solon Library Board of Trustees vacancy announced

SOLON– The City of Solon is accepting applications for membership on the Library Board of Trustees for a city representative. The Library Board of Trustees meets on the fourth Monday of the month at 7 p.m.
Applicants must reside within the Solon city limits. Those interested in becoming a member of the board may submit an application to the City Hall at 101 N. Iowa St. in Solon. The application can be found on the city’s website at www.solon-iowa.com.

Platz selected as NLFD fire chief

Nov. 6 start date, pending city council approval

NORTH LIBERTY– As long as the city council agrees, North Liberty will have its first full-time fire chief on Nov. 6.
Brian Platz, a former assistant chief (and current firefighter) for the Solon-Tri Township Emergency Response Agency (volunteer) and current deputy chief for the Iowa City Fire Department (ICFD), was announced as the new chief Friday, Sept. 1, pending North Liberty City Council approval at a Tuesday, Sept. 12, regular meeting.

Helping families start school year

NORTH LIBERTY– Servolution, a revolution of service, came to Penn Meadows Park, in North Liberty, Friday, Aug. 18, to help families in need with preparations for sending kids back to school.
The event, spearheaded by Life Church of Coralville (formerly of North Liberty), was the second of three. The first took place Thursday, Aug. 17, at Clear Creek Amana High School, in Tiffin, and the third on Monday, Aug. 21, at Kirkwood Elementary, in Coralville.

Puppet Show at Grace Church Sept. 9

NORTH LIBERTY– Grace Community Church in North Liberty will be hosting the Hairy & Co Puppet Show on Saturday, Sept. 9.
The shows are at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., and is open to the public. No tickets are needed for the free show.
Hairy and his furry friends learn valuable lessons from the Bible through singing, storytelling, and of course, laughter, that resonates with kids of all ages (and grown ups, too).
