South Slope responds to CWA union charges

Labor Relations Board to investigate claims of unfair labor practices

NORTH LIBERTY– Representatives from South Slope Communications Cooperative and bargaining representatives from the Communications Workers of America (CWA) union are communicating with officials from the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) to settle complaints of unfair labor practices filed against the company.

NL pantry to show ‘American Winter’

NORTH LIBERTY– The community is invited to a free screening of the documentary “American Winter” on Thursday, March 13, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church hosted by the North Liberty Community Pantry. Following the screening there will be a panel discussion including local organization and community leaders. Light refreshments will be provided.

Tiffin library seeks more city support

TIFFIN– As cities grow in population, resources increasingly get stretched across more residents. Like similar libraries in expanding municipalities, Tiffin’s Springmier Library is feeling the strain.
Library Director Kris Peterson approached the Tiffin City Council in January to request additional funding in order to remain open throughout the week.

SHS band can drive March 1

The Solon High School band can drive will be held at the high school on Saturday, March 1, from 9 a.m. until noon. Phone 319-310-7031 if cans need to be picked up by the group.

‘Bringing in the Green’ carnival March 2

The Solon Dollars for Scholars ‘Bringing in the Green’ carnival will be held on Sunday, March 2, at the Lakeview large gym. The group needs juniors, seniors and their parents to help make the carnival a success again this year. All the money raised will be used for scholarships for the Solon graduating class of 2014. Optimist Club of Solon to sponsor essay contest

SOLON– The Optimist Club of Solon is encouraging area students to contemplate the phrase “How Dreams Lead to Success” as part of the Optimist International essay contest for 2014.
The Optimist Club will judge the local students’ essays, based on the theme and determine the top winners. Top three place winners at the local level will receive medallions and the winning essay will be sent to the district level where college scholarships up to $2,500 are available for top winners.

NORTH LIBERTY– It’s Monday evening at the North Liberty fire station. Probationary firefighter Rich Reasner is emptying the dishwasher and scrubbing items in the kitchen sink. To his right, probationary firefighter Jenn Vanderhoff is checking on a pizza and breadsticks she’s baking for her fellow new recruits and their instructor for the evening, firefighter/EMT Reese Bryson. Four more of their fellow “probies” filter in, and after a bit of friendly banter, they settle in for the evening’s work.

Results positive for CCA

Voters approve $48 million bond issue

OXFORD– Voters in the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District approved a $48 million bond issue last Tuesday (Feb. 4) 79 percent to 21 percent. The measure, which required 60 percent to pass, allows the district to sell bonds to finance the construction of a new elementary school on the east side of Tiffin and expand the middle school, also in Tiffin. Also approved is expanding the high school and improvements to Amana Elementary.
A total of 1,237 votes were cast, with 989 yes, and 268 no votes.

ICCSD preliminary budget relies on assumptions, waits on state aid

IOWA CITY– Craig Hansel, chief financial officer/board of education secretary of the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD), began finalization of the fiscal year 2015 budget by reviewing the certified budget assumptions at the school board Operations Committee meeting on Jan. 28.
Hansel discussed a potential increase in property taxes.

Taylor wins close mayoral election in Swisher

Just 15 votes separate two candidates Feb. 4

SWISHER– Fifteen votes.
That’s how close the mayoral election was Tuesday, Feb. 4, in this small northwestern Johnson County community as voters decided who would replace Tim Mason as mayor.
Christopher J. Taylor won the special election with 151 of 288 total votes (52 percent) against 136 votes (47 percent) for Randy Hurlbert. The seat was vacated in November when Mason abruptly resigned minutes after City Clerk Connie Meier resigned. Council member Mary Gudenkauf has been acting as mayor pro tempore ever since, albeit reluctantly.
