SHS jazz choirs, bands perform at laidback concert

Solon students have no treble with jazz

By Jen Corrigan
Solon Economist

SOLON– Jazz legends like Glenn Miller and Ella Fitzgerald ain’t got nothin’ on the students involved in the Solon jazz program. The high school jazz bands and ensembles hosted Jazz at the Commons Sunday, March 30, an evening filled with food, fun, and music as each band and vocal group performed selections from their competition repertoire.

Don’t stop

Workers for Alliant Energy disassemble the overhead flashing traffic light at the intersection of Highway 1 and Main Street Friday, April 18. In 2013, the City of Solon applied to the Iowa Department of Transportation to replace the overhanging lights with solar-powered lights installed on either side of the street. The lights previously flashed red to east- and westbound traffic, but yellow to north- and southbound lanes of Highway 1, which caused some confusion for motorists unfamiliar with the area. St. John to take over Ely congregate dining

ELY– St. John Lutheran Church has announced it will take over the senior congregate dining and meal delivery service when Horizons Meals on Wheels ends service in April.
Situated in the heart of Ely, St. John has a long record of being committed to serving the community and didn’t hesitate to step forward when Horizons announced last week that its service to Ely and other sites would be discontinued due to budget shortfalls.
“It will be a big project to pull together in a short time,” said the Rev. Erika Uthe. “But there is no other option. Our people need to eat.”

ICCSD slices programs, then tees up next meeting

IOWA CITY– Public reaction to $3.6 million in budget cuts mounted at the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) April 22 school board meeting, and School Board President Sally Hoelscher threatened to curtail public comments as a result. Ultimately, director Jeff McGinness asked that budget cuts be placed on the next business meeting agenda for discussion, even though the 2014-2015 budget has already been certified.

City to eat unsavory premium increase for Tiffin employees

TIFFIN– The cost of health insurance rarely goes down.
And once in a while, there’s a spike in premiums that really causes jaws to drop.
The City of Tiffin encountered one such moment recently, experiencing a 36 percent hike in the cost of health insurance for its employees.
At a meeting last Wednesday, Tiffin council members considered whether any of the increase should be passed on to workers.
In the end, the answer was no.

Referendum likely, but jail won’t be on it

IOWA CITY– The dilemma over the Johnson County Jail and Courthouse had the board of supervisors in meetings that at times were contentious late last year. After another failed bond issue last May, which would have built a justice center, combining additional courthouse space with a new jail, the supervisors have continued to battle over a variety of options.
