Breakfast with Santa Saturday, Dec. 3

NORTH LIBERTY– Santa will be waiting for kids to enjoy a hot meal, provided by the North Liberty Lions Club, on Saturday, Dec. 3, at the North Liberty Recreation Center from 8-11 a.m.
The event includes live music, crafts, special holiday movies on the big screen and a model Christmas train for everyone to enjoy. Don’t forget to visit with Santa and tell him what you want for Christmas. Don’t worry about a camera, photos will be taken free of charge by Sandi Spurrell Photography and posted to her website days later.

BINGO night at the NLRC Dec. 9

NORTH LIBERTY– B-I-N-G-O! Test your luck in the North Liberty Recreation Center’s free annual bingo night Friday, Dec. 9, at 7 p.m.
Eight games of standard bingo, five four-corner and three blackout games will be played. Prizes include memberships and gift certificates. Adults ages 21 and up can register by Dec. 2.

CCA Boys Basketball Annual Spaghetti Dinner Dec. 3

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) boys basketball team will host its Annual Spaghetti Dinner Saturday, Dec. 3, from noon until 7 p.m., at CCA High School, when the CCA boys and girls basketball Clippers battle the Regina Regals.
The freshman boys game will be played at noon, junior varsity (JV) boys play at 3 p.m. and the varsity boys take the court at 6 p.m.
The girls’ games will be held at 1:30 p.m. for JV and the varsity takes the court at 4:30 p.m.
The cost is $ 7 for adults and $ 5 for seniors and those 12 and under.

Tiffin Holiday Craft Fair Sunday, Dec. 4, at Clear Creek Amana High School

TIFFIN– The Holiday Craft Fair will be Sunday, Dec. 4, from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School.
Patrons of the fair can shop local crafters, handmade artists and vendors; get pictures taken with Santa; pick up holiday treats at the cookie walk and enjoy refreshments while completing holiday shopping.

North Liberty’s winter 2017 activity guide now available for download

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty’s redesigned winter activity guide, covering programs from January through April 2017, is available for download on the city’s website.
Highlights for winter include a spring Shed and Scavenger Hunt with Take a Kid Outdoors on March 25, a kayaking trip from Palisades-Kepler State Park to Sutliff Bridge down the Cedar River on April 22, another season of the community gardening at the Meade Barn, a youth soccer program, Eric Litwig and Pete the Cat at the North Liberty Community Library on April 5, and the second year of Beat the Bitter on Feb. 3 and 4.

West High bowlers split with Dubuque Senior

IOWA CITY– Iowa City West High’s bowlers opened the 2016-17 season on Tuesday, Nov. 22, by hosting Dubuque Senior at Colonial Lanes. West split with the Rams as the varsity and junior varsity (JV) girls won 2,245 to 2,241 and 1,902 to 1,861, respectively, and the varsity and JV boys lost 2,739 to 2,919 and 1,925 to 2,116.

SWISHER– About a year ago, Cedar Ridge Winery and Distillery started entering their more-aged products into prestigious contests in order to build credibility with the brand.
“We came into 2016 hoping to get four gold medals in international competitions,” Cedar Ridge owner Jeff Quint said. “As of last week (week of Oct. 3) we had earned 11, and we still have one competition left. The results this year have been very solid, very overwhelming for us.”

Sugar Bottom Mountain Bike Trails closure

IOWA CITY– The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers annually closes Coralville Lake’s Sugar Bottom Mountain Bike Trails near Solon. This closure is to accommodate the shotgun and muzzle loader hunting seasons for deer. This year the closing dates will be Dec. 1 through Jan. 10, 2017. Corps managed lands are open for hunting in designated areas at Coralville Lake. A map of public hunting areas around the lake can be found at www.Coralvillelake.org or picked up at the Administration Office. State rules and regulations apply for hunting in these areas.

Solon pantry offering Thanksgiving gift certificates to Sam’s Market

SOLON– The Solon Community Food Pantry is offering Thanksgiving gift certificates to Sam’s Main Street Market for enrolled families. The certificates are valid until Tuesday, Dec. 6, and are available at the pantry on Monday, Nov. 21 and Monday, Dec. 5. City of Solon receives planning award

BURLINGTON– The City of Solon was recognized Oct. 20, in Burlington, by the American Planner Association (APA) Iowa Chapter. The City of Solon was presented an award for Innovation in Economic Planning and Development for the Solon Comprehensive Plan 2015. The city council would like to send a special thank you to MSA Professional Services and the Steering Committee, Planning and Zoning Commission, city staff and those who participated in the online survey and public input meetings for helping to create a plan for Solon’s future.

Council votes down Solon Lofts site plan

City cites parking, square footage in overriding P&Z

SOLON– A plan to rehabilitate the former St. Mary auditorium into apartments and commercial space was shot down by members of the Solon City Council Nov. 16.
Council members rejected a site plan, submitted for Solon Lofts and Commons, despite its conditional recommendation for approval by the Solon Planning and Zoning (P&Z) Commission.
Prairie Equity Group, LLC, of Iowa City, proposed to renovate the 1915 building into lower-level commercial units and 16 upper-level condominiums, with the conversion of a separate adjacent lot into a gated parking area.
