Rural subdivision approved despite neighbors’ concern for Lake Macbride

JOHNSON COUNTY– Despite public objections and petitioning neighbors, the Johnson County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a plat for an eight-home subdivision just west of Solon.

Classes for the 2014-2015 school year will now start Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014, with graduation Sunday, May 17, 2015.

SOLON– If you started planning for the Solon school district’s 2015 graduation last year, you might want to update your plans.
On a 3-2 vote, the members of the Solon school board have adopted a new calendar for the 2014-2015 year, changing both the start of classes and commencement for seniors.
School will now start Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014, with graduation Sunday, May 17, 2015.

SOLON– As the city dealt with the effects of an oscillating polar vortex and 42 snow events, the Feb. 19 city council meeting provided evidence of how a small town dealt with extreme weather.

Dance, Dance, Dance

UI Dance Marathon raises record-breaking $1.8 million

IOWA CITY– The University of Iowa Dance Marathon Feb. 7 raised $1,801,032.20– $300,000 more than last year and the largest amount in the event’s history.
“Every day is a great day to be a Hawkeye, but today is especially a great day… a big win over Michigan and an amazing Dance Marathon toteboard,” UI Dean of Students David Grady said in a congratulatory note to the event’s organizers.

Solon Survivor Extreme 5K March 8

SOLON– The Solon Survivor Extreme 5K will take place on Saturday, March 8, at 9 a.m. beginning at St. Mary Catholic Church in Solon. This is a warrior dash-style race that is almost completely off-road, and is a fund raiser for the Solon Sluggers 13U baseball team, with a portion of the proceeds to be donated to the local food pantry.
This is an “off-the-grid race” full of hills, creeks, hay bales and natural and manmade obstacles. Water and refreshments will be provided at the finish line.

Ely Rotary to host soup supper March 8

ELY– Gateway Rotary Club is hosting a chili/chicken noodle soup supper from 4 until 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 8. It will be held at the legion hall in downtown Ely.
This a fundraising project for various programs at College Community schools, especially at Prairie Edge and Prairie Woods facilities. There will be live entertainment provided by Shima Country Sounds, and a bake sale supplied by local residents.
The cost is $5 per person and children under 5 are free.
