KCs to hold basketball free throw contest Sunday, Jan. 24

SOLON– The Knights of Columbus (KC) Council 12129 in Solon will hold a basketball free throw contest, for competitors ages nine to 14, on Sunday, Jan. 24. The competition will be held at the Solon Middle School in conjunction with the Solon Optimists Basketball Contests. Signup and warm ups start at 12:30 p.m. with competition taking place from 1-2 p.m. Each of the winners earns the opportunity to compete in the district competition with an eye toward moving on to state and international levels.

Solon Archery Team to host tournament Jan. 23 at high school

SOLON– The Solon Archery Team will host a tournament at Solon High School on Saturday, Jan. 23. The team hopes to get more kids involved in the sport and this would be a way for them to see the team firsthand. The tournament runs from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The team will host 500 kids from 10 Eastern Iowa schools. Participants will range in age from elementary to high school.
A raffle for a Mathews Z-2 Bow in Lost Camo will be held during the tournament to raise funds to support the team.

Brad Raasch and sons trek 230 miles to assist Lakeview Elementary

SOLON– The Raasch brothers– Preston, 5, and Zander, 4– call it the Big Adventure.
Their father, Brad Raasch, calls it “the right thing to do.”
For six days in August, Raasch and his sons cycled over 230 miles– the distance equivalent to traveling from Solon to Chicago– to raise funds to purchase supplies for children on the autism spectrum at Lakeview Elementary.
Raasch set up a funding page on the Crowdsource site YouCaring, listing a target goal of $500.
“To be honest, I wasn’t sure if we’d make that $500,” Raasch said.

RIVERSIDE– The Old Capitol Valley District of the Hawkeye Area Council, Boy Scouts of America, celebrated the accomplishments of the district and its volunteer leaders at the District Dinner on Thursday, Nov. 12. The dinner was held at St. Mary’s Parish Hall in Riverside.
The District Award of Merit is the highest award a district can bestow on a volunteer leader. A nominee must have rendered noteworthy service to youth in Scouting, outside Scouting, or both. The following volunteers were recognized for their service, both in and out of Scouting.

Solon Boy Scout Troop 120 Soup Annual Soup Supper Saturday, Jan. 23, at St. Mary Catholic Church

SOLON– Solon Boy Scout Troop 120 is hosting its annual soup supper on Saturday, Jan. 23, at St Mary Catholic Church from 5-7 p.m. The soup supper features home made soups of all varieties. Previous year’s have included such traditional soups as chicken noodle and chili, and some not so traditional soups such as Demok (spinach and coconut milk) and shrimp chowder. The supper is all-you-can-eat, including fresh baked bread made by the Scouts the morning of the supper and a wide assortment of desserts. Cost is $7 for ages 10 and up, $5 for ages 5 to 9 and free for those less than 5 years of age.

Tiffin property valuations rise, levies likely to remain stable

TIFFIN– Thanks to consistent growth, the City of Tiffin will have a little more breathing room at budget time.
Each year, the Johnson County Auditor’s Office provides a report of each city’s taxable values on all properties within the city limits. Tiffin City Administrator Doug Boldt told the council at its Jan. 5 meeting that Tiffin’s valuation went from $78,015,306 in January 2014 to $93,821,928 in January 2015, an increase of about $15.8 million.
That equates to roughly $130,000 more in the city’s general fund balance this year, estimated Boldt.

North Liberty: population, 18,228

NORTH LIBERTY– Before undertaking a special census last fall, city officials estimated North Liberty’s population around 17,000.
They were wrong.
The US Census Bureau conducted the count in the latter months of 2015, and the results have put the population at 18,228, according to a letter detailing the preliminary figure. The information also noted that North Liberty has 7,548 housing units.
At the last official population count in 2010, North Liberty’s population was 13,374. The new number marks an increase of 36 percent in just five years.

Cancilla, Hart head new raptor rehabilitation organization

DES MOINES– A new wildlife organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of injured and distressed raptors has been registered as a non-profit corporation in Iowa. RARE, which stands for Raptor Advocacy, Rehabilitation and Education, is headed by Nathaniel Hart and Jodeane Cancilla, both of whom hold Wildlife Rehabilitation Permits from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

TIFFIN– The Tiffin Fire Association will hold its annual meeting on Monday, Jan. 18, at the Tiffin Fire Station commencing at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will include the appointment of directors. Immediately following will be the regular meeting including election of officers.

Black Gowns and Bowties Gala to be held at CCA Jan. 30

TIFFIN– On Saturday, Jan. 30, Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) fine arts boosters, F.A.M.E., will sponsor a Black Gowns and Bowties Gala in the CCA High School’s Performing Arts Center in Tiffin. Proceeds will be used to fund performance attire and supplies for growing fine arts programs.
The evening will begin at 6 p.m. in the high school commons area with a silent auction and piano music by some of the talented students, teachers and friends of the program. Students will serve hors d’oeuvres while guests peruse and bid on silent auction items.
