When Johnson County law enforcement needs to get to the bottom– literally– they

IOWA CITY— Johnson County citizens have a variety of public safety agencies on duty around the clock to protect them, ranging from traditional fire departments and law enforcement agencies to the county’s ambulance service. Specialty units such as the Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) Response Team, the Sheriff’s SWAT team, County Rescue 52 and the bomb squad supplement these organizations.
But one such unit operates literally in the murky shadows most of us never see.

Begging for a Park

NL organizers hope to make a case for off-leash dog park

NORTH LIBERTY— In 2009, a North Liberty resident had an idea for an off-leash dog park where her canine companion could run freely and play with other four-legged friends. In 2012 that vision faded, but a new group is picking up where she left off.

Sun shines on NL’s 2015 festival

NORTH LIBERTY– The barbecue pits and jamming musicians weren’t the only hot things at North Liberty’s annual Blues & BBQ festival this year.
Finally; the sun was warm, too.
It’s been awhile since the annual community celebration of summer– and all things barbecue, blues and family-friendly fun– has enjoyed a day without stormy weather. In 2011, 2013 and 2014, storms and heavy rains interfered enough with the grounds and equipment to cause the festival to be cancelled or called off early.

CCA school board takes its first look at high school expansion

OXFORD— With Tiffin Elementary nearly done and the first phase of the middle school expansion and renovation in progress, the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school board turned its attention to the high school and a planned expansion scheduled to start next spring.
All three projects, along with HVAC and other improvements at Amana Elementary, are part of a $48 million bond issue voters approved in 2014.

Upper level closures

NL’s Eyestone to run for Iowa City school board

NORTH LIBERTY– Shawn Eyestone of North Liberty has announced his candidacy for a seat on the Iowa City Community School District’s Board of Education.
There are five open seats on the board to fill this fall. “I believe strongly that every student in our district deserves to have their specific needs addressed to the best of our ability,” Eyestone said. “Whether they are performing below grade level, above grade level, or have any other special needs, the students are the reason I am entering the race.”
