Johnson County Sheriff’s office releases 2013 annual report

Curious trends in crime stats

JOHNSON COUNTY– Sometimes there are no clear cut answers to explain why things are the way they are. As an example, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) released its annual report documenting the department’s activities in 2013. While some categories of offenses are down, Sheriff Lonny Pulkrabek is at a loss as to why, exactly. On the other hand, in general, calls for service are up, continuing a trend that shows the department is busier with each passing year.

NLFD responds to dryer fire in apartment

NORTH LIBERTY– A working smoke detector helped provide a quick response and limited damage to a North Liberty apartment building Sunday.
The North Liberty Fire Department was dispatched to 162 Elm Ridge Drive Sunday April 6, at approximately 4 p.m. for a building fire. First arriving North Liberty Police units reported thick smoke on the third floor of the apartment building and residents were evacuated. North Liberty Fire Department units arrived and found smoke throughout the structure and heavy smoke coming from an apartment on the third floor.

NORTH LIBERTY– Several North Liberty churches will be hosting “Make A Difference Day,” a service project, on Saturday, April 26, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Work teams from local churches will be fanning out all over North Liberty performing community service. 
Service projects will include yard work, small construction jobs, window washing, painting and many other projects at little or no cost, to improve the lives of the North Liberty community.

North Bend Elementary 5K and 1 Mile Color Run this Saturday, April 12

NORTH LIBERTY– On Saturday, April 12, the North Bend Elementary Parent-Teacher Group (PTG) and various sponsors will host the school’s first annual North Bend Elementary 5K and 1 Mile Color Run, beginning at 9 a.m. at Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) North Bend Elementary, 2230 St. Andrews Dr. The event is a fundraiser for the North Bend PTG, with proceeds going toward classroom enrichment, playground equipment, technology equipment, field trips, guest speakers and educational supplies.

NL police to offer disposal for unused prescription drugs

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Police Department, in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Agency, will collect expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs on Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Liberty Pharmacy, 555 W. Cherry St., for safe disposal.
This service is free and anonymous. Tablets, capsules, and all other solid dosage forms will be collected. Liquid medications in their original containers will be accepted as well.

NL Community Library receives technology grant award

NORTH LIBERTY– The State Library of Iowa is pleased to announce that the North Liberty Community Library has recently received a Library Technology Grant Award of $1,600 to purchase two laptop computers dedicated to career development. Patrons 18 years old and older can use these computers to build resumes, conduct job searches, take proctored exams and more.
