Adelitas grand opening Oct. 27

NORTH LIBERTY– Walk into Adelitas, and you won’t see too many sombreros, or other symbols of traditional Mexican culture for that matter.
“I tried to make it look a little bit more like a sports bar, something you would actually see in Mexico,” said Jose Antonio Hernandez, the young general manager and co-owner of Adelitas.
An avid sports fan, Hernandez wanted to go for the feel of a modern Mexican sports bar, as opposed to what most Mexican restaurants aim for. “It’s a little bit different. It’s not something that you would see in every place.”

OXFORD– Voters in Oxford will have six choices on their ballot Tuesday, Nov. 7, for city council and one name on the ballot for Mayor as Tim Hennes runs unopposed.
Hennes is a life-long resident of Oxford and is a Senior Building Inspector for the City of Iowa City. Hennes lives with his wife Robin and together they have two grown daughters, who also reside in Oxford.

Heated exchange at council meeting to extend water

SOLON– Council member Lauren Whitehead felt out of the loop.
But Mayor Steve Stange assured there was no conspiracy to extend city water to a county subdivision three miles outside of town.
Despite an earnest start, the closing moments of the Oct. 4 Solon City Council meeting devolved into argument and heated words as the city’s mayor and a former council member clashed verbally.

Archery Team open house Oct. 19

SOLON– The Solon Archery Team hosts an open house on Thursday, Oct. 19, with registration at 6:30 p.m., and a parent meeting at 7 p.m. at the Solon United Methodist Church Family Life Center gym. All current team members, parents, and anyone in fifth-12th grades interested in joining the team are encouraged to attend. At this time, required forms will needed to be completed by parents, shirt sizing information completed, and collection of dues. All information concerning the archery program will be discussed. Questions regarding the program will also be answered.

Fourth Annual Spooky Spartan Trail moves inside Oct. 21

SOLON– The Solon Secondary Schools PTO will host its fourth annual Spooky Spartan Trail on Saturday, Oct. 21. All ages are welcome at the less scary, lighted version from 5-6 p.m. Those interested in maximum scaring should attend from 7-9 p.m. For this year only, the trail moves inside the former Solon Middle/High School at 301 S. Iowa St., rumored to be already haunted. Concessions and assorted Halloween trinkets will be available for purchase, and games and a scary movie will provide entertainment in the lobby for those awaiting their turn to enter.

Tickets to go on sale for “Disney’s Mary Poppins” Oct. 27

SOLON– Solon Center for the Arts will present “Disney’s Mary Poppins” Friday, Nov. 10, at 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 12, at 2 p.m.
Tickets will be available online at 10 a.m., Friday, Oct. 27, at www.midwestix.com/organizations/solon-center.
Tickets for “Disney’s Mary Poppins” will also be sold in-person in the Solon Center for the Arts Lobby on Saturday, Nov. 4, from 10 a.m. until noon, Monday, Nov. 6, from 6-8 p.m. and Thursday, Nov. 9, from 6-8 p.m. The box office will also be open one hour before each show Nov. 10, 11 and 12.

Ely First Presbyterian Church Chicken Noodle Soup and Kolach Supper Saturday, Oct. 21

ELY– The First Presbyterian Church, near Ely, hosts its 68th Annual Chicken Soup and Kolach Supper on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 4-7 p.m.
The cost for adults is $10 and kids 3-12 pay just $5 for the menu of piping hot chicken noodle soup with crackers, fresh bread, relishes and a drink, plus fresh-baked kolaches.

County seeks more input on first Comprehensive Plan

IOWA CITY– A listening post, seeking public input on Johnson County’s first-ever comprehensive plan, became more of an open debate regarding Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO) on Monday, Oct. 9, at the Health and Human Services Building, in Iowa City.
The meeting was scheduled as a work session for the board of supervisors and planning and zoning commission, and 26 individuals took up the microphone to state their position.

Vehicles stolen: Lock your cars!

SOLON– A rash of stolen vehicles in Solon has prompted law enforcement authorities to remind residents to lock their cars.
Three different vehicles were stolen from separate locations on the south side of Solon within a week during early October, according to Johnson County Sheriff Lonny Pulkrabek.
The first occurred late Wednesday, Oct. 4, or early Thursday, Oct. 5, when a truck and trailer were taken from Lee’s Ag Clinic.

Swisher Auxiliary to host Annual Homemade Turkey Supper and Turkey Bingo Saturday, Nov. 4

SWISHER– Swisher Auxiliary’s Annual Homemade Turkey Supper and Turkey Bingo will hosted Saturday, Nov 4, from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at the Swisher American Legion, located at 68 3rd St. SE, in Swisher.
Cost of the event is adults $10, children 6-12 years old $5 with under 5 admitted free.
The Junior Auxiliary will also host a turkey bingo upstairs. Cost is $1 to play bingo for the opportunity to win a frozen turkey. Bingo begins at 4:30 p.m. and lasts until the turkeys are gone. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Stone Soup Supper and Silent Auction Oct. 29 benefits NL pantry

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Community Pantry hosts their 9th Annual Stone Soup Supper and Silent Auction on Sunday, Oct. 29, from 4:30-7 p.m., at the South Slope Community Room, 980 North Front Street. The event is sponsored by Hills Bank and Trust Company, University of Iowa Community Credit Union, Great Western Bank, Cost Cutters and South Slope Cooperative Communications.
