“The Butler” As Cecil Gaines serves eight presidents during his tenure as a butler at the White House, the civil rights movement, Vietnam, and other major events affect this man’s life, family, and American society.
“Enough Said” A divorced woman who decides to pursue the man she’s interested in learns he’s her new friend’s ex-husband.
“Start! Walking At Home with Leslie Sansone” If you’re new to exercising, begin with the gentle-paced, 20-minute– one mile– beginner program. When you’re ready, move on to the intermediate 30-minute– two mile– brisk walk.

Optimist Club basketball contests Jan. 26

SOLON– The Optimist Club of Solon will sponsor basketball contests at the Solon Middle School gym on Sunday, Jan. 26. Registration is at 12:30 p.m., and contests start at 1 p.m.
There will be contests in dribbling, passing, and shooting for ages 8 through 13– boys and girls divisions, with first, second and third place awards to each age group, plus boys and girls champion awards.

Solon KC free throw competition Jan. 26

SOLON– All boys and girls ages 10 to 14 are invited to participate in the local level of competition for the 2013 Knights of Columbus (KC) Free Throw Championship. The local KC Council #12129 competition will be held on Sunday, Jan. 26, at 1 p.m. at the Solon Middle School.

Meal and a movie Jan. 31

SOLON– If you haven’t seen the widely acclaimed movie “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” starring Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey, then join the Meal and a Movie crowd Friday, Jan. 31, at the Solon Public Library at 11 a.m. The movie will follow a catered meal of lasagna, garlic bread, green beans and dessert ($7.50). Kettle-fried chicken dinner Feb. 1 at Legion

SOLON– The Solon Sons of the American Legion will be hosting their annual Famous Kettle-Fried Chicken Dinner on Saturday, Feb. 1, at the Solon American Legion. The menu includes all-you-can-eat delicious kettle-fried chicken, cheesy potatoes, oven-baked beans, bread, dessert and  drinks. Serving is from 5-7:30 p.m., with take-out available. Tickets are $8 for adults; $4 for children 6-12; children under 6 eat free. Proceeds benefit the community and Solon school projects.

Frog Hollow to expand

NORTH LIBERTY– Frog Hollow Kid Campus is getting a new pad.
The child care center in North Liberty built its location on Dubuque Street in 2008. Growth in the community has warranted a second location, said owner Alan Arzu.
Arzu came to the Jan. 14 North Liberty City Council meeting to present a preliminary site plan for a new center to be built at the southeast corner of Jones Boulevard and Penn Street.
