Iowa Master Naturalist Program at Macbride Recreation Area beginning Sept. 12

SOLON– Iowa has recently been added to a list of more than 25 states with a Master Naturalist program. In the Iowa Master Naturalists (IMN) program, local experts provide adult students with 40 hours of education about Iowa’s environment and natural history for a $250 materials fee. In return, IMN students pledge to complete least 40 hours of volunteer work for environmental education, stewardship or citizen science projects.

Ely Fall Fest Sept. 16-18

ELY– The ninth annual Ely Fall Fest returns Sept. 16-18. The weekend festival begins Friday night with a Moonlight 5K and 1-mile run at 7:45 p.m., followed with a community celebration. Saturday is an all-day festival featuring over 20 activities and events, including kids’ inflatables and games, an adult co-ed softball tournament, a cornhole tournament, pet parade, youth punt/pass/kick competition, magic show, wiener dog race and live music throughout the day. The day is capped with a fireworks display at dusk. Sunday is devoted to the Classic Car Show from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Robotics Club open houses Aug. 29 and Sept. 3 at middle school

SOLON– The Solon Robotics Club will be hosting two open house meetings for middle and high school students Monday, Aug. 29, from 3-6:30 p.m. and Saturday, Sept 3, from 8:30-11 a.m. at the robotics room behind the middle school auditorium. Robert and Eileen Jacobson spent the week of Aug. 4 through Aug. 11 vacationing in Pelican Rapids, Minn. While there, they helped celebrate the 90th birthday of Robert’s Aunt Lillian Rankin. Another aunt, Mildred Martinson, turned 94. The Jacobson’s son and family, Tony, Kris, Matthew, and Bryce Jacobson of Naperville, Illinois, also attended the birthday celebration.

Firefighters, kids cool down at annual fundraiser

NORTH LIBERTY– An ominous morning turned into a beautiful day for the North Liberty Fire Department’s annual Salute to Summer fundraiser last Saturday, Aug. 20, at Bobber’s Grill and Scales Pointe Campground.
Around 600 attended the event, said fire Capt. Chris Kochanny, which is fewer than normal. Still, he said it was one of the better events since the weather was cooler.
“In years past we’ve had issues with people getting too hot, especially kids in bouncy houses,” he said.
The only downside, he noted, was the wind.

NL man accused of assault shot in leg by homeowner

OXFORD– A North Liberty man accused of a rural Oxford home invasion was shot by the homeowner, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.
Aaron Douglas Kahler, 39, 645 Andy Ct., North Liberty faces charges of assault while participating in a felony, burglary second degree, domestic assault third and subsequent offense and violation of a no-contact order. after an incident Aug. 16.

Baby Fair at North Liberty library Aug. 28

Back on the campaign trail

IOWA CITY– She wasn’t there for herself, but Amy Nielsen, North Liberty mayor and Iowa House District 77 hopeful, is nonetheless back on the campaign trail following a short hiatus after winning the Democratic nomination in June.
“We were kind of in first gear,” she said at a speaking event for Hillary Clinton last week. “Now we’ve gone straight to third.”

Officers share how to have positive interactions with police

NORTH LIBERTY– While police-involved shootings and subsequent public protests continue to pop up across the country, the atmosphere was relaxed inside one of the North Liberty Community Center meeting rooms during a special forum Aug. 21 between police and citizens.
Around 40 attendees, in addition to several North Liberty Police Department staff, met over pizza and drinks at the 90-minute “town hall” style meeting Sunday evening. A panel of about six officers answered participants’ questions, which they could either ask aloud or write down on index cards.

Detour change: Oak Lane and North Liberty Road

NORTH LIBERTY– Early this week, crews began to pave North Liberty Road between Oak Lane and Dubuque Street, as well as the southern portion of the Oak Lane intersection. During this work, traffic to Oak Lane will continue to be detoured north on North Liberty Road, though there may be some delays at times.
Once this is completed, Oak Lane traffic will be detoured south on North Liberty Road to Dubuque Street so crews can pave the north side of the intersection. The contractor has not yet been able to provide an expected date for this change.
