Boundary scenarios still under discussion; new resource allocation model to be reviewed

IOWA CITY– It was boundary scenarios, take four.
Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) board members and administration met again to discuss possible high school and junior high boundaries at the Tuesday, April 14, school board meeting.

National Alliance for Mental Illness fundraising walk to be April 25

IOWA CITY– The public is invited to join the 11th annual National Alliance for Mental Illness Johnson County (NAMIJC) fundraising walk on April 25, at Terry Trueblood Recreational Center, 4213 Sand Rd. SE, Iowa City. This year’s 9 a.m. speaker will be author, advocate and NAMIJC Honorary Walk Chair; Zach Wahls.
The walk kicks off at 10 a.m. and will circle Sand Lake. This is a family-friendly event with activities for children. Dogs on leashes are welcome. Music will be provided by the Tonya English Band, and complimentary snacks, coffee and water will be provided.

Creek and Luther jazz groups to showcase a Night of Jazz April 25

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) instrumental music program will showcase jazz music at the annual Night of Jazz concert on Saturday, April 25, at 7 p.m. at CCA High School’s Performing Arts Center in Tiffin.
CCA jazz bands will share the stage this year with the renowned Luther Jazz Orchestra from Luther College and its music department. Luther will be joining CCA Middle School Jazz Band, CCA Jazz Band and the award-winning CCA Jazz Ensemble.

Tiffin Community Fund to meet with city, school, business leaders

TIFFIN– Tiffin Community Fund, an affiliate of the Community Foundation of Johnson County, will meet with Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school, city and businesses leaders to discuss community needs on Tuesday, April 28, from 7-8 a.m. in the Tiffin City Hall at 300 Railroad St., Tiffin.
Representatives of the Tiffin Community Fund are convening the meeting to connect city, school and business leaders, and to provide opportunities to address concerns and opportunities in the community.

Pantry to hold ribbon cutting, tree planting for new garden April 25

NORTH LIBERTY– Join the North Liberty Community Pantry for a ribbon cutting and tree planting event to open the new Garden for Health project on Saturday, April 25, from 1-3 p.m., at 89 Jones Blvd. in North Liberty.

Reminder: open burning prohibited in North Liberty

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Fire Department would like to remind North Liberty residents of the city’s Open Burn Policy.
1. Open burning is prohibited throughout the entire city. The burning of yard waste, household items and burn barrels are prohibited.
2. Due to the close proximity of homes in Holiday Lodge and Golfview, no open fires including recreational fire pits, or burning shall be permitted at any time or place within these parks. Charcoal, in a charcoal broiler or grill, for the purpose of cooking food shall be allowed.

SHS Drama presents “12 Angry Jurors” April 17-19

SOLON– The Solon Drama Department is proud to present “12 Angry Jurors” as its 2015 spring play. The show, renamed from the 1957 film “12 Angry Men,” is an American classic that explores our justice system, prejudice and the power of the individual. The show takes place over the course of one evening in the jury room as 12 jurors deliberate on their verdict. Tempers flare and each juror’s morality is tested. Did the 19-year old boy kill his father or is there room for reasonable doubt?

Prostate Cancer Awareness Seminar April 30 at St. Mary

SOLON– A Prostate Cancer Awareness Seminar will be held on Thursday, April 30, at 7 p.m. in the St. Mary Catholic Church parish hall in Solon.
One in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime. Prostate cancer can be a serious disease, but most men diagnosed with prostate cancer do not die from it. In fact, more that 2.5 million men in the United States who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point are still alive today.

RAGBRAI information meetings to be held April 17 and 20

SOLON– The City of Solon will host two informational meetings for Solon businesses, local churches and non-profit organizations interested in having a vendor booth for RAGBRAI July 24 in Solon. The community is invited to attend one of these meetings to be held at city hall on Friday, April 17, at 10 a.m. or Monday, April 20, at 7 p.m. City staff will review the route through Solon, Main Street business outdoor service areas and vendor booth information.

Field of Cubes April 18 at SHS

SOLON– Speedcubing is solving a Rubik’s cube and other three-dimensional puzzles as fast as possible. Field of Cubes 2015 is Solon’s first-ever speedcubing competition. It will be held at Solon High School on Saturday, April 18, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Registration is at 9 a.m. Cost is $5-$15 at the door, depending on the number of competitions entered. Spectators are welcome, and there is no charge for admission. If you want to learn more about cubing or would like to see people from Iowa and surrounding states solve cubes in less that 20 seconds, please stop by at any time.

Trees Forever and the Bur Oak Land Trust team for spring field day near Solon May 3

SOLON– A new partnership will highlight the beauty of spring with a nature walk. “Spring into Nature!” is a free field day sponsored by Trees Forever and the Bur Oak Land Trust featuring many varieties of native plants, from trees to prairie to spring ephemerals - those short-lived woodland wildflowers that mark the start of spring.
The free event will be Sunday, May 3, at Turkey Creek, a Bur Oak Land Trust property on 107 scenic acres of prairie and forest near Solon.
