Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the Old Gold Diner

Wow, what a year The Old Gold Diner is having. Many thanks to the City of Solon, The Solon Retirement Village and generous donations from members of the community. Since starting to receive meals from the Solon Retirement Village Jan. 2 this year, Old Gold Diner has been able to serve over 7,000 meals to seniors and others, in their homes or at the Solon Methodist Church where those who want to dine with friends and neighbors are hosted. Of those meals, 10 percent were meals that went to people in need of nutritional meals and unable to afford them.

Farmland values fall from historic high

Land value survey shows decrease in value of $773 per acre

By Michael Duffy, Karen Kovarik, Iowa State University Extension
AMES– Average Iowa farmland value is now estimated to be $7,943 per acre— a drop in value of $773, or 8.9 percent, per acre. Land values were determined by the Iowa Land Value Survey, which was conducted in November by the Center for Agricultural and Rural Development at Iowa State University (ISU). Results from the survey are similar to results found by the Realtors Land Institute and the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.

Take THAT, cancer

NORTH LIBERTY– Ever wanted to punch cancer in the nose, knock its teeth out or even give cancer a swift knee to the groin?
Five young men from North Central Junior High (NCJH) have made it possible, on their crowd fund website “KILL CANCER for Flash and Avery.”
The group of seventh and eighth graders– Carson Baldes, Sam Rechkemmer, Kaleb Williams, Drake Woody and Ben Vander Leest– together with mentor B.C. Tweedt of North Liberty created a web-based video to help two young friends fight cancer.

Project Holiday gives more reason to celebrate

Crisis Center helps feed families during holiday season

NORTH LIBERTY– Could you buy groceries for a family of three on a budget of just over $100 each month?
It’s the difficult reality for North Liberty resident Michael Plummer and many others like him who must stretch every dollar just to get by.
But Plummer and about 1,500 other families will have a brighter holiday this year, thanks to Project Holiday 2014, a collaborative effort of the Crisis Center of Johnson County and its partners that distributes holiday meals to area families.

Through the eyes of a lion

NORTH LIBERTY– Each year, children in North Liberty eagerly look forward to the first Saturday of December and their opportunity to visit with Santa. They come to the North Liberty Recreation Center by the hundreds to talk to him and to eat a hearty breakfast of pancakes, eggs, sausage, juice, milk and coffee served by the North Liberty Lions Club.

Top Shelf Volunteers

NORTH LIBERTY– Judy and Paul McRoberts are a married couple who offer a unique dynamic to the North Liberty Food and Clothing Pantry. Both of the McRoberts can be found volunteering in different capacities around the pantry and were both an integral part of the planning of the new pantry building by serving on the Operations Committee.
The McRoberts started volunteering at the pantry at different times. Judy started 12 years ago and Paul started six years ago on a regular basis. They enjoy spending time together while they volunteer.

Awkward family photos

Oliver Feltes is A-okay with the jolly old elf, but brother Solomon feels differently, it seems. The two young men were part of the crowd visiting Santa Claus at the Solon Public Library Dec. 8. See our print edition for more photos by Lori Lindner.

Confectionary construction

SOLON– It doesn’t take much to build a seasonal tradition; just some graham crackers, fluffy white frosting and a few well-placed candies.
Children and their families gathered at the Solon Public Library Nov. 17 to decorate take-home gingerbread houses, just one of the seasonal offerings the library serves up from year to year. The library provides the pre-fabbed graham cracker huts, frosting and candy items, while the kids provide the creative design. Youth Services Librarian Carey Major said the activity has been a library favorite since at least 2009.
