NL council climbing out of a watering hole

Irrigation meters to incur fees year-round if NL ordinance passes

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty residents who like a lush, green lawn may have to pay more for it in upcoming seasons.
Last Tuesday, Jan. 8, the North Liberty City Council passed the first reading of an ordinance amendment to change the way the city bills for irrigation meters.

Battling the budget crunch

Senior Advocates seek city funding for Old Gold Diner site manager

SOLON– Without senior dining, there’s no way to reach older residents of the community with needed programs.
The Old Gold Diner is the hub of the senior community.
When budget cuts forced the elimination of the site manager position and the introduction of packaged plastic meals, local supporters began rallying the troops.
As a result, representatives of Solon Senior Advocates met with Solon City Council members last week, seeking city funds to match county money for the site manager position.

NL Planning & Zoning considers future of multifamily housing… again

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty’s long-standing debate on multifamily housing is still on the table.
North Liberty’s Planning & Zoning (P&Z) Commission reopened the topic during an informal work session at its Jan. 2 meeting. No action was proposed or considered, but City Planner Dean Wheatley said the commission informally discussed reasons behind its recent votes to deny multifamily development proposals, and to try to establish guidance staff can give developers for future proposals.
“Ultimately that guidance will need to be endorsed and refined by city council,” Wheatley added.

City to take general fund hit after undeveloped commercial land drops

SOLON– The season of giving is over.
It’s time for taking back.
The City of Solon will absorb what amounts to a $10,000 hit in its general fund for the upcoming fiscal year because of a change in the valuation of undeveloped property.
Budget discussions began in earnest for the Solon City Council during a regular meeting last week where city administrator Cassandra Lippincott announced the news.
Undeveloped commercial and multifamily residential lots in the Fox Ridge subdivision have been reassessed by Johnson County as a result of a legislative change, she said.

NL's diamonds under pressure

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty’s comprehensive plan for developing its city parks has been in place since 2009, but increasing demand for organized recreation has kicked it into high gear.
The North Liberty City Council and the city’s parks and recreation commission met jointly last Thursday, Dec. 6, to talk about plans for two of the city’s major park spaces: one of the oldest of the community’s parks, and the newest to date.

CCA growth: Perception is reality

UI Professor’s statistics back-up CCA enrollment growth projections

OXFORD– A draft report produced by a University of Iowa professor and one of his graduate students uses scientific methodology to pinpoint where enrollment growth is occurring in the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school district, and maps-out the likely continuation of that growth.
