Solon to join cost-share for regional coordinator

SOLON– It’s time to enhance safety training for city employees.
At an Oct. 16 meeting, Solon City Council members gave informal approval to join a pool of regional communities looking to hire a full-time safety instructor.
Currently, public works employees receive Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training through the Eastern Iowa Area Safety and Support Organization (EIASSO).

P&Z Commission makes its concerns with the UDO known

IOWA CITY– A number of items related to agriculture, in general, and animal agriculture, in particular, in the proposed Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) for Johnson County has brought forth a firestorm of criticism from the agricultural community.

More blood!

Zombie face painting at the library

SOLON– It isn’t often you hear teenagers asking for head wounds.
But such calls were frequent at the Solon Public Library Oct. 10 as the organizer of the Iowa City Zombie March visited for a workshop on appearing undead.
Joshua Christain taught about a dozen Solon teenagers how to make their face paler and to darken their cheekbones and under their eyes as part of the library’s weekly Creative, Amazing Teens (C.A.T.S.) program for fifth through 12th graders.

Recreation Department trunk or treat at SRNA

SOLON– The rain went away just in time.
The Solon Recreation Department hosted its first-ever trunk or treat in the parking lot outside the Timber DOME Lodge at the Solon Recreation and Nature Area on Saturday, Oct. 19.
Eleven vehicles representing local businesses and organizations handed out candy to a parade of children wearing costumes.
Solon Recreation Administrative Assistant McKenzie McIlrath said an estimated 170 people attended and she hopes it will become an annual event.

Lot for sale

City to sell land next to City Hall

SOLON– The property next to Solon City Hall is for sale.
A developer approached the city with a plan to build a two-story mixed-use building on the former residential lot, and the city has given other interested parties until the morning of Nov. 19 to submit alternate plans.
At an Oct. 16 meeting, council members approved resolution 19-46, setting a Nov. 20 public hearing on the disposal of 120 W. Main Street, a property acquired by the city along with the current city hall site.

House Divided Brewery

Home brewer's dream come true

ELY– Cal Corrin has been brewing his own beer since the early 1990s.
There weren’t any craft beers around back then, but he found himself drawn to the imports.
“You’d find a stout maybe once in a while or a Guinness or some other import that’s different than domestic beer,” he explained.
He was residing in Quincy, Ill., at the time, which had a home brew supply store, so he started making his own.
“Even when I started, it was always in the back of my mind, wouldn’t it be great to do a brewery,” he said. “Always in my thoughts.”

Meet the candidates

Four candidates for two seats on Solon City Council

SOLON– Eligible voters in the City of Solon will have their choice of council representatives in November.
Four candidates, including one incumbent, are vying for four-year terms on the Solon City Council.
The two Solon City Council seats occupied by Mark Prentice and Shawn Mercer will have their terms come to an end at the end of the year. Mercer is seeking re-election, joined on the Tuesday, Nov. 5, ballot by John D. Farlinger, Daniel P. O'Neil and Kevin Samek.

Gabbard: The cost of war is too high

POTUS hopeful makes quick stop by the lake

SOLON– When Paul Julius went to his first caucus, he showed up not knowing who Barack Obama was, and ended up in Obama’s camp.
“That was a really proud moment,” he said. “Yes! It started here in Iowa– that kind of got his name out.
“This sort of had the same feeling,” he said of hosting presidential candidate U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D- Hawaii) Oct. 9 in the backyard of his rural Solon home. “I did something I believe in, and even though it was small, it’s what I could do.”

Legion helps heroes with hunt

SOLON– After Don Erusha’s passing in March, his son Mike asked Solon American Legion Past Commander Jim Leland’s help in finding two disabled veterans interested in an antelope hunt in Wyoming.
Mike Erusha, a resident of Wyoming, is part of the organization “Hunting with Heroes Wyoming” which honors disabled veterans with an all-expense paid, guided antelope hunt out of Casper, Wyo.
“I found two very qualified veterans that fit the bill,” Leland said.

Races set for council, school election

Plenty of candidates this time around

SOLON– There was a time when you had to find someone to run for an open seat on the school board or city council.
Not this year.
This year, there are six candidates for two open seats on the Solon Community School District Board of Education and four candidates for two seats on the Solon City Council. All terms are for four years.
In both cases, an incumbent declined to seek re-election.
In the case of the school board, Jim Hauer won’t be running. For city council, Mark Prentice won’t be on the ballot.
But there’s still a crowded field, including an incumbent in each race.
