Council considers concept for residential annexation 75 acres of houses, duplexes and four-plexes planned for Greazel property

SOLON– Another big residential subdivision is on Solon’s western horizon.
Developers representing the Grace Greazel Estate presented a preliminary annexation and rezoning concept for 116 acres just outside the city limits during a city council meeting Nov. 18.
As proposed, Trail Ridge Estates would include 107 single-family lots, 55 duplex lots and 13 four-plex lots– close to 270 living units– with space dedicated for public use as a dog park adjacent to the Hoover Nature Trail.

Auditor Weipert pleased with county election process heading into third term

IOWA CITY– A record 86 percent turnout.
Huge early voting numbers due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
A fabulously popular response to drive-through voting.
Johnson County Auditor Travis Weipert felt the Nov. 3 general election went really well.
On the last day of voting, he said, the staff of the auditor’s office processed 1,000 votes utilizing the drive-through service offered at the Johnson County Health and Human Services building’s parking ramp in Iowa City.

Santa is coming to town Dec. 5

SOLON– A safe and socially-distanced Santa Claus will appear in Solon Saturday, Dec. 5, from 1-3 p.m. in the window of Briar Ridge Bikes, 120 W. Main St., Solon, according to the Solon Recreation Department.
If you have a letter you would like sent to the North Pole, please bring it along, and place it in Santa’s mailbox.

High winds hampered firefighters

SOLON– A Solon family lost its home to a fire fueled by high winds Wednesday, Nov. 18.
The Solon Tri-Township Fire Department and assisting mutual aid agencies responded to a call reporting a fire with flames showing at 330 Marshek Ct. shortly after 1 p.m., according to Asst. Chief Scott Wolfe.
Based on the call information, Wolfe activated a second tier call for mutual aid immediately.
Firefighters arrived at the Randy and Sandy Cline residence to find heavy fire and smoke showing from the back of the garage, he said.

District watching for uptick after holidays

SOLON– The Solon Community School District (SCSD) is keeping its eyes on the numbers.
Rising COVID-19 infection and quarantine numbers among students and staff came close to closing two buildings in recent weeks, and the district is already looking at possible impacts from the upcoming holiday season.
The school system remains poised to move classrooms, grade levels or even an entire building to online learning while instructing as many students as possible in-person, according to Superintendent Davis Eidahl.

Public comments on in-person learning as COVID cases increase

SOLON– Solon High School students want to hang onto school for as long as they can.
A handful spoke to Solon Community School District board members during a Nov. 19 meeting, expressing appreciation for in-person learning and their desire to keep going.
Those sentiments were echoed by an almost equal number of parents present for the session, offset by the concerns of two others.
Speakers for the public comment portion of the agenda spilled into the adjacent room due to social distancing guidelines, with remarks held to a time limit.

Moel is Military Hero of the Game for UI v. Nebraska

Survivor of USS Gambier Bay honored by Hawkeyes

IOWA CITY– Solon’s Dean Moel, a survivor of the sinking of the USS Gambier Bay by Japanese forces during World War II, will be honored by the University of Iowa football program during its Friday, Nov. 27, game hosting Nebraska.
Moel was selected as the Military Hero of the Game and will be recognized during the radio broadcast and social media posts leading up to the gridiron contest.
Moel was born a little bit northeast of Sutliff, in Cedar County, and spent time in Central City, Cedar Bluff and Nevada (Iowa) before settling in Cedar Rapids.

SOLON Words matter.
Thank you for your service, is a common phrase that we hear as service members, observed United States Air Force Lt. Col. Karri (Hirl) Roman. It may seem simple, but there is so much meaning behind that phrase.
Roman, a 1995 graduate of Solon High School, was the featured speaker at the annual Veterans Day program hosted by the school in its Center For the Arts Wednesday, Nov. 11.
Sacrifices are made by all service members, Roman said, although those sacrifices may look different.

Stramel one to watch

Red Vespa manager honors by state restaurant association

SOLON Krista Stramel didnt know where her path was.
For me, the hospitality industry gave me a lot of stability and really allowed me to figure out where I wanted to go in life and what my purpose was, she explained.
Stramel, 32, celebrated her third year as the general manager of Red Vespa, in Solon, with a nomination as one of 40 Women to Watch in Hospitality announced by the Iowa Restaurant Association.
The honorees were recognized Nov. 16 at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines during the associations annual Celebrating Excellence Awards Ceremony.

Quarantine numbers on the rise

SOLON– The Solon Community School District (SCSD) continues to battle to keep its doors open and its students learning.
An increase in the number of student and staff quarantined prompted the district to post two notices from the administrative team to the community on its website Nov. 9 and Nov. 11.
The COVID-19 dashboard on the school website reported 146 students and eight staff quarantined Nov. 13, with three positive student cases.

Johnson County receives REAP grant for conservation land purchase Malinda Reif Reilly Fen and Prairie located north of Solon

IOWA CITY– Johnson County Conservation (JCC) received a $400,000 Resource Enhancement and Protection (REAP) grant to help fund the purchase of a new 100-acre preserve north of Solon, over half of which is native prairie and wetland including a fen.
The site joins JCC’s other conservation wetlands– Ciha Fen, Pechman Delta and Cedar River Crossing– in preserving a variety of once-common wetlands which have disappeared from much of Iowa’s landscape. In addition to providing homes for a variety of native plants and animals, these wetlands help cleanse water, govern its flow, and fight floods.
