Courthouse annex ready for vote

By Chris Umscheid
Solon Economist

IOWA CITY– Voters in Johnson County will decide in November whether or not to approve a $30,800,000 bond referendum for a courthouse annex.
The Johnson County Board of Supervisors gave tentative approval for the floor plans of the proposed three-story structure in a meeting Wednesday, May 8, with Neumann Monson Architects and Venture Architects as well as County Attorney Janet Lyness and Sheriff Lonny Pulkrabek. The board gave an overview of the facility later that afternoon in a meeting with the Criminal Justice Coordinating Committee.

Referendum likely this fall, but new jail won’t be on it

IOWA CITY– The dilemma over the Johnson County Jail and Courthouse had the board of supervisors in meetings that at times were contentious late last year. After another failed bond issue last May, which would have built a justice center, combining additional courthouse space with a new jail, the supervisors have continued to battle over a variety of options.

NLFD recruits: training the best, for the worst

NLFD recruits learn to save themselves

NORTH LIBERTY– Firefighters work in some of the most hostile environments on Earth, where extreme heat and near zero visibility are normal in a setting most definitely “Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health (IDLH).” It is in these situations where the ability to remain calm and rely on training and experience are vital, particularly when things go from bad to worse. While firefighters go into burning structures to save others’ lives, sometimes they end up having to save themselves.

NORTH LIBERTY– Yoga is known for its physical, mental and spiritual benefits. It can increase strength, facilitate flexibility and reduce stress.
At the North Liberty Community Library, it is also helping kids get more out of books read at story time.

Solon school district studies the use of technology

SOLON– Technology is a word tossed about casually on a day-to-day basis. But, what it actually entails, and how technology is used, is open for debate and discussion.

Wise about birds

Mike Havlik of the Y-Camp wildlife experience in Boone holds a live barred owl as part of his presentation on the behavior of owls and other birds of prey during he Eagle Watch and Expo in North Liberty Saturday, Feb. 8.This owl is missing an eye, after being injured on a roadway and rescued by Y Camp staff. Owls aren’t exactly as wise as legend would have it, Havlik said, because their huge eyes take up a large portion of their skull cavities. This and other interesting facts about birds of prey were shared by bird and wildlife experts with expo visitors throughout the day.

Council OKs site plan for new Casey’s

Spokesperson says Solon can support two separate stores

SOLON– Solon, apparently, is large enough to support a second Casey’s.
At its regular meeting on Feb. 5, the City Council approved a site plan for a new Casey’s General Store to be located on Lot 98 of Fox Ridge, Part 4 off Highway One near the post office.
Approval had been delayed as developers prepared and presented a traffic study to the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) regarding a second entrance to the property on Highway 1, required to allow ingress and egress by semi-tractor trailers, according to a Casey’s spokesperson.

What we have is a failure to communicate

Stalled labor negotiations lead to public blame, dispute, union rally

North Liberty Leader
NORTH LIBERTY– While workers have returned to their positions at South Slope Cooperative Communications, they have done so under a company-crafted contract that has not been adopted by the workers’ union.
The lack of a negotiated agreement has created mounting tensions between union bargaining representatives and management since the previous contract expired at midnight on Oct. 31, 2013.
Last Thursday, Jan. 23, employees organized a rally and press conference at the North Liberty Community Center, to bring public attention to the situation.
