Obituaries

Bette Turnipseed

Bette Jean Turnipseed, 87, of Washington, died Sunday, April 6, 2014, at the United Presbyterian Home following a decline in health.
Celebration of life services were held April 10 at the United Methodist Church in Washington with Pastor Jim Stiles officiating. Interment was at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Memorials have been established for the United Methodist Church, the United Presbyterian Home or Hospice of Washington County. Murlen Vogt

Murlen Philip Vogt, 100, of Williamsburg, formerly of Homestead, was called home to the Lord, Saturday, April 5, 2014, at Highland Ridge Care Center in Williamsburg, following a short illness. Funeral Service was April 9, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo with the Rev. Andrew Gray officiating. Burial was in the Marengo Cemetery. Memorials may be contributed to St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo, The Lutheran Hour, or the charity of the donor’s choice.

Janet Bennett

Janet “Jan” Kay Bennett, 74, died peacefully in her son’s and her and husband Ty’s former home March 29, 2014, from a courageous battle with cancer. Celebration of Jan’s life was April 2 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, with burial following in Anderson Cemetery in Swisher.
Jan was born Dec. 7, 1939, in West Branch, the daughter of Francis W. and Clarice (Countryman) Cihla. She was united in marriage to Ty Bennett on July 6, 1958. She worked for Moore Business Forms for over 23 years, until her retirement in 2003. Jan was a member of Swisher American Legion Auxiliary.

Ralph Berstler

Ralph E. Berstler, 85, passed away on Tuesday, March 25, 2014, at his home in Cedar Rapids. Service with military honors was held April 1 at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories.
Survivors include his children: sons Thomas (Debra) of Valley Center Calif., Richard (Sheri) of Fairfax, Robert (Janan) of Solon; daughter Jill Berstler of New Hampton; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; brother Delmar (Luella) of Cedar Rapids; his special friend OraLee Hollingsworth and many nieces and nephews. 

Lou Ann Goldie

Lou Ann Goldie, 58, of Hiawatha died at her home on Monday, March 24, 2014. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Lou Ann is survived by her mother and stepfather, Lois and Jack Frisk of Cedar Rapids, a brother, Randy Fields, Boston, Mass., stepbrother, Bart Frisk and wife Melanie, Shueyville, and a very dear friend, Tony Christopherson.
She was preceded in death by her father, Keith Collier, a sister, Terry Kester and a half-brother, William Collier.

Nancy Krotz

Nancy Lee (Vlasek) Krotz, 70, of Cedar Rapids, died on Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at the Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. Funeral Mass was April 5 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Christopher Podhajksy. Burial was at St. John’s Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her husband, Marvin; son, Jeff (Amy) Krotz of Homestead; daughters, Jennifer (Dan) Kucera and Jodie (Craig) Charipar, both of Cedar Rapids; brother, James (Karen) Vlasek of Ely; and four grandsons.
