Iowa defeats Michigan 14-13

Hawk Talk

Something was missing.
The Hawkeyes had lost three straight at Kinnick Stadium after going undefeated at home last season.
North Dakota State knocked off Iowa, 23-21, on a 37-yard field goal as time ran out on Sept. 17.
Northwestern beat the Hawks, 38-31, on Oct. 1.
On Oct. 22, the Badgers came to Kinnick and left with a 19-7 win.
Last Saturday, under the lights, the magic at Kinnick was back.
Freshman Keith Duncan split the uprights from 33 yards out as time ran out and the Hawks knocked off the third-ranked Wolverines, 14-13.
Iowa is 3-1 this season when scoring 14 points.

A busy weekend

The women’s and men’s basketball teams opened the season with doubleheaders on Friday night and Sunday afternoon. They each won both games.
The Hawkeye women started things off with a 96-76 win over Oral Roberts.
What a difference a week makes.
Last week, in Iowa’s exhibition, the Hawks started slow and got rolling in the second half. Last Friday, the Hawkeyes jumped out to an 11-4 lead, led 53-30 at half and cruised to their first win of the season.
Lisa Bluder went with her platoon system again.

Review gear before shotgun deer seasons begin

DES MOINES– The first of Iowa’s shotgun deer seasons begin Dec. 3, giving hunters ample time to get their gun cleaned, oiled and patterned before heading to the timber.
“Most hunters want their guns sighted in for deer season. We suggest they come to a shooting range and begin at 25 yards and work out distances where they feel comfortable taking a shot in the field,” said Megan Wisecup, hunter education administrator for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. “Practicing and knowing how the gun will perform before opening day is a good way to prepare for a successful hunt.”

NORTH LIBERTY– Sign up for the first annual Lightning Bolt 5K Run/Walk and Little Bolt 1-mile Run, held on Sunday, Nov. 20, starting at North Central Junior High, 180 E. Forevergreen Rd., in North Liberty.
Early registration is $20 for the 5K run/walk, $10 for the 1-mile run, and $25 for a joint one adult and one child registration, with an addition $5 per child. Late registration begins after Nov. 12.

CCA dancers shine at state competition

NEWTON– Two dancers on the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) dance team were among the top 10 at the 2017 Iowa State Drill Team Association (ISDTA) State Solo Competition held in Newton, Nov. 4-5.
Freshman Peyton Hertel placed eighth in the Class 5 Dance, where Knoxville’s Jaden Hamilton took first. CCA sophomore Angelina Gore placed 10th in the same class, behind Hertel and Ana Zamora of Wahlert Catholic (Dubuque).
ISDTA hosts the largest solo competition in the state with over 600 dances performed.

Trojans roll over Warriors in first state semifinal since 2002

Dome, sweet Dome

CEDAR FALLS– The fans’ shirts read, “There’s No Place Like Dome” Friday, Nov. 11, as the Iowa City West High Trojans took on the Cedar Rapids Washington Warriors in a Class 4A state semifinal football game.
After a convincing 35-7 win for the Trojans, the UNI-Dome may well become “Dome, Sweet Dome” as they return to Cedar Falls on Friday, Nov. 18, to take on West Des Moines Dowling for the championship.

An unfortunate three-peat

Women of Troy fall 3-1 at state volleyball in quarterfinal round

CEDAR RAPIDS– A pair of “three-peats” marked Iowa City West High’s appearance in the 2016 State Volleyball Tournament Tuesday, Nov. 8, at the U.S. Cellular Center, in Cedar Rapids. It was the third consecutive appearance for the Women of Troy, and sadly, the third consecutive year eliminated in the first (quarterfinal) round. The Jaguars of Ankeny Centennial knocked West High out of the Class 5A championship hunt, 3-1 (26-24, 16-25, 14-25, 23-25).

2016-2017 Iowa City West High wrestling preview: A mixed bag of experience for West’s wrestlers

North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– It’s the 18th year leading the Iowa City West High wrestling program for coach Mark Reiland, and he’s taking things in stride with a business-as-usual approach.
Reiland’s assessment of the season is simple: “Typical year where most of the same teams will be in the hunt again this year.”
The Trojans finished the 2015-16 season with a 15-14 record overall and a 5-4 showing in the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC).

2016-2017 Iowa City West High boys basketball preview:

Good chemistry to fuel the Trojan basketball machine

North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– At first glance, looking over a preseason media questionnaire from Iowa City West High coach Steve Bergman, one might think it could be a tough year for the Trojan varsity basketball team. Ten seniors graduated from the 2016 Class 4A state runner-up team that went 21-5 overall and 14-2 in the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC).

Season on the brink

Iowa caught in Penn State nightmare, 41-14

By Don Lund

Not in my wildest (bad) dreams did I see this coming for the Hawkeye football team.
I really believed Iowa had a shot at winning the Big Ten West for the second season in a row.
I wasn’t the only one.
I kept the two preseason football magazines and both of them thought the Hawks would compete for the West title.

Women’s basketball

Hawk Talk

Watching the Hawkeye women win their first exhibition, 61-35, over Lewis University last Sunday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena helped a little taking the sting out of the football loss.
It was also fun hanging out with Karley, a fourth grade student from Clear Creek Amana.
Karley is a big Hawkeye fan, especially the women’s basketball team.
Fourth grade was when I started following the Hawks and I never stopped.

Men’s basketball

Hawk Talk

I caught the Iowa men’s basketball opener at Carver last Friday (they beat Regis, 95-73) and came away with three observations.
No. 1: Peter Jok can score.
The 6-6 senior was 5-7 from 3-point land. He scored 16 straight points, played 28 minutes and had 28 points.
No. 2: Tyler Cook is the real deal.
Tyler started, played 26 minutes, scored 15 points and had six rebounds, three steals and one blocked shot. Tyler is so powerful and quick down low and that makes him tough to guard.
No. 3: The Hawks have a lot of work to do.
