Spring Football 2017 (part two)

Hawk Talk

This is the second part of a series previewing the Iowa Hawkeye spring football practice. Last week I looked at the offensive line, which returns six players with starting experience. This week I’ll talk about the tight ends, wide receivers and fullbacks.

Tight ends

Kirk Ferentz likes to use his tight ends, who not only need to be able to catch the ball but be able to block on running plays.
It really hurt the offense when tight end George Kittle went out with an injury after the Purdue game.

CEDAR RAPIDS– You get better by running against the best. With that in mind, Solon posted a sixth-place finish in the J-Hawk Relays Saturday, April 1, at Kingston Stadium in Cedar Rapids.
“We see the cream of the crop from Eastern Iowa here each year,” observed Solon girls track coach Brent Sands, referring to the depth of the 14 teams, a combination of 4A and 3A schools. “It gives us a chance to face good competition– and let that help us through the year; to show we can compete.”

Tipton produces rays of hope for Spartans

Slim preseason for Spartan track and field

TIPTON– The sun shrugged off the clouds briefly on Tuesday, March 28, much as the athletes did with their sweats taking to the track and field, at the opening of the boys’ outdoor season in Tipton.
The drive out to the meet saw windshields peppered with specks of moisture as the thermometer read 52 degrees, threatening a cloudy, damp and cold start to the season, but that all changed.

Girls open soccer season with 11-1 win

SOLON– “We are set up this year to do amazing things,” Solon head coach John Tucker said of this year’s Lady Spartan varsity soccer team. “We have high goals and expectations, knowing that we are returning a very good team, with another year of experience under their belts.”
The Solon girls opened the 2017 season with an 11-1 road drubbing of West Liberty Monday, April 3.
Tucker has spent the last 13 years coaching and amassed a career record of 151-65. This year, his assistant is Andrea Keegen. Last year’s record for the Lady Spartans was 11-9 and they went 4-3 in conference play.
