Winning streak continues

67-50 win over Hempstead makes 59 consecutive wins

By Chris Umscheid
North Liberty Leader

IOWA CITY– It was a decisive win for the West High Trojans Friday, Jan. 3, as the Mustangs of Dubuque Hempstead rode into town. The winning streak continued for West. Yet coach Steve Bergman was not the happiest man on Melrose Avenue.
“We’ve played better than we played tonight,” he said in a post-game interview. “It was a game without much flow. We had a tough time staying out of foul trouble.” But, “you’ve got to win them. We didn’t play great and still won, so that’s a good thing.”

Clippers pick up a win from Vinton-Shellsburg

TIFFIN– Nile Rourke summed it up very succinctly.
“It feels good to start the New Year off right.”
The junior was talking about his Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers’ 55-44 win Thursday night (Jan. 2) at home against the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings. The win improved the squad’s record to 3-5 and took away some of the sting of a pre-Christmas loss to West Branch. “It was good to be in control and to keep it for the whole game. We’ve had trouble finishing games, so it’s about time we played a full game and finished and won a game,” Rourke said.

The Iowa Hawkeye women’s basketball team finished the non-conference schedule with a 88-62 win over North Dakota at Carver-Hawkeye Arena Saturday.
“I thought we had a slow start, but once we got into the flow of this thing our fast break really got us back into this game,” said head coach Lisa Bluder. “Three-point shooting at the end of the half really helped.”
That’s the fun part of watching this team… when they get on a roll.
It all starts with Samantha Logic, who had 21 points and eight assists.

West splits with CR Xavier

Trojans still undefeated, girls slide further behind

North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– Neither (freezing) rain, nor sleet, nor slippery roads could keep the men’s and women’s varsity basketball double-dip against the Saints of Cedar Rapids Xavier from occurring Friday, Dec. 20, in the Iowa City West home gym.
It was a split night for West with the Women of Troy coming up short, 49-46, and the Trojans pounding the ball for a 75-41 win. Mikaela Morgan led the women with 16 points and nine rebounds while David Dileo led the way for the men with 19. Wyatt Lohaus had 18 points.
