Coming to America… Peter Jok

Hawk Talk

This probably won’t come as a shock, but I’m almost certain Peter Jok is the first Iowa Hawkeye basketball player born in Sudan.
Sudan is a country in Northeast Africa. It is bordered by Egypt to the north, the Red Sea to the east, and South Sudan to the south.
It is the third-largest country in Africa, and is divided by the river Nile into eastern and western halves.
Peter moved to Des Moines when he was 9 and lived with Mike Nixon, his guardian.
He is related to the late Manute Bol and current Los Angeles Laker, Luol Deng.

Solon upsets No. 1 seed Wahlert

DES MOINES– Well, why not?
Solon absolutely thumped the No. 1 seed in the opening round of the 3A baseball tournament Tuesday, advancing to a semifinal against Harlan (28-5) Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Principal Park in Des Moines.
The Spartans shelled Dubuque Wahlert, 12-2, in a game shortened to six innings by the mercy rule.
Solon jumped out to a first-inning lead right off the bat, but salted the game away with four-run spurts in the fifth and sixth innings. The Spartans loaded the bases with no outs in each of those innings.

Lady Spartans take third

Solon comes back once again against Boy-Hull/Rock Valley

FORT DODGE– If you’d have told Solon softball coach Jim White at the beginning of the year that his team would take third place in the state tournament, he’d have been ecstatic.
Denied a chance at the 3A title game, Solon’s Lady Spartans rebounded one last time for the 2016 season, defeating No. 11 Boy-Hull/Rock Valley, 6-3, in the third-place game at the state softball tournament Friday.
Solon, ranked No. 3, finished the year 34-10.
